Monkey's should be stark naked in their own fur climbing trees, screeching at the top of their lungs, throwing poop at the likes of us with their monkey buddies, and doing whatever that type of monkey does in it's natural habitat. A lot of cases of exotic pets are scary and sad stories of drug lords keeping tigers in cages and drug addicts keeping an anaconda in their basement, but to automatically assume a woman and her pet monkey is the worst case scenario is pure conjecture. The monkey could have been living the high life, happy and healthy. The only problem was I doubt it had a say in whether or not it would join the woman. B'Elanna Posted January 15, 2013 #31 Share Posted January 15, 2013 It is a sad story, for sure... The owner was on local radio losing her mind, because she is having the animal taken from her. The animal itself knows no other "mother", and will be traumatized from the seperation as well. I feel bad for everyone involved, but because having a monkey as a pet here is illegal, all of this could have been avoided if the woman (a lawyer) would have obeyed the law. But that being said, I find the law hypocritical, since you can own tropical fish, repitiles, and insects here, and even dogs and cats who's "natural" habitat is much different from the southern Ontario climate - think anything from chihuahuas to the Asian varieties to huskies far better suited to much colder climates to even those people who insist on having big German Shepherds or other large dogs in their 700 sq foot apartments. None of these things are in their habitat, yet it is perfectly acceptable to own them. From what I heard about the owner of this monkey, she's an excellent owner, and the monkey is in excellent shape. Given the above, that's all that should matter...except for the fact that it is clearly illegal, and should not have been done in the first place. She was a LAWYER? Oh wow, the one who should know better regarding the law is the one who's prepared to break it - she should have her license to practice taken away as well, that's just not right. I agree with you that it's wrong to keep certain breeds of cat and dog in living spaces that are inadequate and climates that are completely unsuitable, but not sure about the fish et cetera. The owner should (in my opinion) show that they are willing and able to care for their pet (snakes, for example, need specific foods and heat lamps et cetera, and people who buy them don't always appreciate the rules), but as long as the pet is happy and healthy, not stressed (and in an apartment that is too small, it might be) and well socialised and exercised, I think that's okay.
