Spain drops US troops from parade

Spain's annual military parade has taken place in the capital Madrid to celebrate the country's National Day.

The event has been overshadowed by controversy after the government left US troops out of the parade, and invited French soldiers instead.

Critics have accused Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of damaging relations with Washington.

The Americans are already angry about the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq earlier this year.

Plans by the Spanish government to use this year's military parade as a chance to unite the country look doomed to fail, says the BBC's Katya Adler in Madrid.

She says the parade's perfect lines and well-tuned music were a stark contrast to the discord and divisions provoked by the event.

Many Spaniards say they are furious about the inclusion of veterans who fought for Spain's former military dictator, General Franco, alongside the Nazis in World War II.

But Spanish Defence Minister Jose Bono defended the decision.

He said all Spaniards were welcome to celebrate their nation, which was committed to peace and reconciliation.

But Washington is said to feel snubbed that its soldiers have been uninvited.

They have taken part every year since the September 11 attacks in 2001.

That French soldiers will take their place is yet another sign, say observers, of Spain's new foreign policy.

Mr Zapatero has been keen to court Europe's heavyweights, France and Germany, and seems rather nonchalant about upsetting the US.
