Elementary school shooting

I don't think the U.S. is any more crazy. We're nowhere near perfect, but I'd bet this country actually is a lot more mentally healthy than nations that are not as prosperous or have high moral values.

In the context of the US I quote 'The rate of mental illness is staggering' and '25% of Americans have a mental disorder at some point' - http://www.webmd.com...s-is-staggering - I also quote 'researchers still consider the figure an underestimate'

I also quote 'Among the study's findings are an 18% rate of anxiety disorders and a 10% rate of mood disorders in the U.S. Both figures are above that of any other country, but range far beyond what is found in places such as Shanghai, which showed just a 2.4% rate of anxiety and a 1.7% rate of depression'

A lot of US citizens are negative and abusive towards each other. What you call a lack of respect or a broken society is actually mental illness. The abused become the abusers and the chain continues with the occasional person going nuts and shooting everyone.

Careful now... There is no evidence that the shooter spent time playing violent video games.

I would bet he did, but there is no evidence of that yet.

And there is no correlation between playing violent games and carrying out violent acts. I play tons of violent games. And I don't even kill spiders, I kindly escort them out of the house...

Did I say there was? I pointed it out. Because killers have the opportunity to target practice. Before the real deal. It is especially dangerous. Think. You don't get to practice stabbing someone to death? How could you practice other methods of murder? But with guns. Just by playing video games. You can practice murder.

Well I am anti-murder of ALL children.

HAH!

:w00t:

Me too. I don't get his point at all.

I'm honestly dreading clicking on CNN or MSNBC in case they have the faces of the little angels. Maybe I should stay away from the Internet and go outside all weekend with my 2 month old.

I totally disagree.

I think that mental illness is not nearly as prevalent in the USA than the doctors and big pharma would have us believe.

Nearly every normal human emotion is now being considered a mental illness that demands chemical treatment.

I think it's the drugs that are screwing people up.

I know, I know, it's not been confirmed yet if the shooter was on any medication, but I'll bet $100 he was. Call it a hunch.

Guys I wish you would take your worry over politics elsewhere . This thread is a tragic story.. Using it to yap over * Oh our gun laws may suffer now * .. Right now, people are more concerned with the actual story at hand.. not your worry over gun laws.. Give it a rest..

I think Obama did a good job of this, I thought it was a very respectful speech.

What is this world coming too. I for one think that Fire arms manufactures should responsible for these crimes as. We all always point fingers at the shooters, but never at the people making the guns. What is the point if making guns after guns. There is already too much out there. They are the biggest criminals out there and they just sit back and roll in the dough. They should be held responsible for all these gun crimes. Also games like COD should be banned. These first person shooter games are too much. You have kids playing these violent games and whats worst is that parents are buying their kids these games to play. I for one support the ban on guns.

Come on its from psychological research not speculation.

The shooter may well have been on medication and yes I agree it does make many people flip.

I agree. I've lived abroad, and despite the flaws, America probably has much less mental issues than average because of its prosperity and attention to mental health and counselling. Of course, we've still a long way to go.

Also, the majority of mental drugs actually do help. Its just the few addictions and side affects that taint the picture. I don't know if this killer was on medication, but if he wasn't he probably needed it.

Thanks :) :). I think I'll hold her a bit more tonight.

And yeah I can't imagine anyone having to inform those parents of something like this... I hope there's counselling available for the cops who do that sort of stuff...

Are you honestly comparing playing a video game to practice for shooting a gun or murder. Maybe I am misreading that statement and not getting the correct meaning, but if you are then it sounds like you have never shot a gun or played one of the varies shooting games. Not one of the popular shooting games has realistic shooting mechanisms, even most of the unpopular ones have unrealistic shooting mechanisms. Shooting a gun in real life is no where near the same as playing a video game and trying to compare playing a video game to practice for shooting or murder is potentially one of the most ridiculous things I have heard. Very few games have gun sway, and if they do it is often unrealistic, you don't feel the recoil, hear the sound of the gun going off, or even have realistic bullet physics. So trying in anyway to equate a shooting game with actual practice of a gun is just utterly ridiculous.

As for the shooting itself, it is a tragedy and personally I think this is a sign of a greater social problem going on in America.

This is the last I'll mention it, and maybe we can start another thread, but psychological research is about as reliable as something that's not reliable (see what I did there?)

any way, back to the morose reality of this thread...

I wish I could like this twice.

Under their logic, I suppose banning video games would be the next logical move.

Because Millions upon Millions of ruthless cold-blooded killers are training on their x-box's as we speak.

Also games like COD should be banned.

No way jose!

Just because it's a shooter game doesn't mean it's bad! I play it and I know many people who do and none of them even own guns or hunt.

The shooter, who sources identified as Adam Lanza, 20, shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, in the face at their home in Newtown, Conn., then went to nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School where she taught and gunned down her entire class, according to sources.

Ok I read in the news that he went to her class and shot her at her classroom, hence shooting little kids.

http://usnews.nbcnew...cut-school?lite

Why is there so many conflicting stories? Because there are so many journalists out there trying to scare their readers to death with the most shocking story.

Those poor little angels. My heart aches for the whole community.

Very horrible news story: young children from kindergarden to 4th grade are among the victims. I like to know what motive the shooter had in mind when he took his Mother's life as well committed such acts of terror on a school. I pray for the victims tonight and with those in the recent shooting in the Clackamas Mall in Oregon, it comes to show how people can easily harm one another for no apparent reason.

Fifty to one hundred years ago there was virtually NO gun control, and virtually NO school shootings. What changed? Our culture changed. Technology and the presentation of violence changed. Then our culture became based around technology.

We turn on the television and see a kid cut open his own mother while she breathes on The Walking Dead, and then see him blow her brains out before she can reanimate into a zombie. We see Call of Duty: Black Ops II advertisements online, on our televisions, on our phones - that advocate sending drone strikes onto other players; of course, before unloading an entire clip of ammo onto a once lively enemy body. All the while conditioning us to concepts of futuristic warfare that might have seemed strange to us if they were in any other form than a video game. Conditioning us, making the thousands of people killed by US drones in the past several years seem okay, since it seems more like a video game. The truth? We're detached.

We see films where violence and special effects are the main attractions, and we laugh when we see fictional characters in pain or die horrific deaths, fully knowing these things are capable of happening to us; fully knowing that these things do happen to people. But all the while, since these things don't happen to us, we don't give a damn. But you know what? It isn't bloody funny. This is serious.

We should discuss how the violence of our culture anethesizes us - especially as younger children are babysat by television sets and introduced to violent concepts at a progressively younger and younger age as time goes on.

Our culture has spawned a desensitized and violent sub-culture of irritable, impatient, behaviorally riddled children who see no need for originality when everything is based around instant gratification and pre-imagined and pre-packaged thoughts. Children who see no correlation between what is a video game, and what is reality.

Children - my generation, and this new one, are apart of a culture that sees violence and finds it amusing. A culture that sees a world based on false, violent realities they spend hours upon hours immersed in - THAT PARENTS LET BABYSIT THEM. And when twenty innocent children are gunned down we have the AUDACITY to be SURPRISED?

I'm sorry for my bluntness.. Even if I am being superficial, I am telling the truth.

We watched this as we could at work today. As of 6pm newscast, the shooter had his brother Ryan's identification with him. Early reports were that he lived in New Jersey with his dad and his brother Adam lived in Connecticut with his mother. And so all the confusion. News reports tonight are that the shooter was Adam. He killed his mother in their home this morning and went to the school where he shot her class and 6 other adults, teachers and support staff. Ryan and dad are now in FBI custody being questioned in New Jersey. It will be awhile before we know what was going on, but this whole mentality of shooting everything you don't like just makes me sick. This is what we've come to I guess. Malls, movies, stores, schools, nothing is safe anymore. Thus shall be the way we live. What a life.
