Render Posted December 20, 2012 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2012 A German data protection body has ordered Facebook to end its policy of making members use their real names. The policy violates German laws that give people the right to use pseudonyms online, said the data protection agency in Schleswig-Holstein. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20766682
Space Commander Travis Posted December 20, 2012 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2012 On this subject, I see that YouTube are trying to pressure you to do the same (or as they put it, make it easier to use your real name across all Google sites). This seems suspicious to me.

Keel M. Posted December 26, 2012 #4 Share Posted December 26, 2012 I am not bothered on either account since neither Facebook nor YouTube/Google have any means of verifying that the name I put in is, in fact, the name I was born with.
Bonecrusher Posted December 26, 2012 #5 Share Posted December 26, 2012 I think you need to check out my second post in " Facebook's privacy vote". It explains my feelings in a nutshell and why it's okay to use your first name. If all of us starting using aliases it would make the Internet less human. And that's not a good thing if you want to socialise with people on Facebook. But I'm sure the casual browsers won't mind. I'm not going to announce to my family that I'm Medium Brown. It justs look bizarre and a sure sign that I'm about to be ostracised.
Hasina Posted December 26, 2012 #6 Share Posted December 26, 2012 (edited) Maybe there should be options? Like only friends can see your name, etc. Edited December 26, 2012 by Hasina

That of course is true. I mean, even if one was to call oneself Barack Obama they'd have to prove that you weren't, wouldn't they, so it really is completely pointless. Orcseeker Posted December 30, 2012 #11 Share Posted December 30, 2012 The problem with using real names is that they can then profile you properly (in regards to YouTube) simply by looking at what you watch, what you like and dislike, your comments etc. Where google is supposed to be protective of personal data. I believe they've been forced to implement this new method under the guise of the "trolling" situation where realistically it is just to give authorities more control over the Internet. AsteroidX Posted December 30, 2012 #12 Share Posted December 30, 2012 Yeah taking away the option to use an avatar is not cool. I mean if your just on Facebook to play Farmville or something. So you have to ruin your 1 time name 1 account. I hate reading so might be wrong. But yeah have to agree thats a bad trend.
Lilly Posted December 30, 2012 #13 Share Posted December 30, 2012 Hopefully people will start to understand that facebook is an intrusion into your personal life that has a very real downside.
