New Year's honours from monarchy should end

Benjamin Zephaniah, the poet and author, has called for the honours system to be divorced from the monarchy and the concept of "Empire" so it can become truly multicultural.

Mr Zephaniah, who was guest editor of Today, BBC radio's flagship news programme, rejected an honour 10 years ago.

He said a new honours system should be established to be "truly multicultural".

The honours list is a farce. Only a tiny minority of those 'honoured' actually deserve it ....... Stella McCartney? you're 'avin' a larf arncha? 'Services to fashion'? ye gods! Her 'designs' couldn't be duller and less flattering if they tried!

I quite like Zephaniah's poetry but I don't think he deserved to be honoured for it ...... all credit to him for turning it down(10yrs ago).

Some of the comments at the end of the article are interesting ....... I agree with the person who asks 'why should something British become multicultural?'.

Bottom line for me: scrap the honours list, it's a joke.

What is loyalty, entertainment, bravery, success, or service?

I have pondered this since I heard the trapped Chilean miners (in 2010) described as 'heroes'.

The honours I am fully happy with usually involve dedication to some kind of altruism or service in the community.

If that racist prat Zephaniah is a poet, then I'm a world-reknowned neuro-surgeon! As soon as I read 'multicultural' I knew what was coming. They don't miss a trick, do they?

Oh yes, and while we're on the subject...WHERE'S MY B****Y KNIGHTHOOD???

Benjamin Zephaniah is a racist??

Btw in my final college lessons our tutor did a recital of his poem "Turkey".

And she did it in a faux Jamacian accent which had the class in stitches.

The last thing on anybody's mind was the touchy subject of racism.

But I agree about too many non-entities getting accolades.

Tbh they should make our medal-winning olympiads dames and sirs.

Bradley Wiggins knighthood should set off an avalanche.

And yet Terrance bloody d**** (D I C K S, it's his bloody name, stupid autocensor) - who is along with Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling responsible for entire generations of children discovering a joy of reading (the man's produced hundreds of childrens books) - is still sadly missing from the Honours Rolls.

Maybe the Honours Roll autocensor can't print his name either :P

A miserable OBE? Hardly worth the train fare to Buck House for a measly OBE!

I'm sure Paulo Di Canio will step in if there's a vacancy in the honours list!

Yeah. You should read his poem "Dear White Fella."

I'll admit that there's black on white racism.

But I can't imagine the ganga smoking, dreadlocked Rastafarian's are part of this fraternity.

Tbh he was slagging off our Christmas staple in his poem.

You could well imagine him comparing a turkey breast to white skin.

I swear nobody picked up on the racist vibes so I'm guilty by association.

Your suggesting the evidence is clear-cut in this other poem so I'm going to check it out.
