Waspie_Dwarf Posted January 6, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 6, 2013 Scientists losing hope of reviving French telescope Scientists are losing optimism in the recovery of a French planet-hunting space telescope that suddenly stopped producing science data in November. The CoRoT mission's science instrument, comprised of a 10.6-inch telescope and a wide-field visible camera, stopped returning data Nov. 2. Engineers analyzing the problem blame the anomaly on a radiation-triggered disruption in communication between the instrument and the spacecraft's main computer. Uncle Sam Posted January 6, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 6, 2013 If we had the space shuttle still, we could anchor inside the bay and repair it or keep it in position with the arm. It was the only vehicle of its kind that could snatch the objects or even place it back in high orbit.
Waspie_Dwarf Posted January 6, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted January 6, 2013 If we had the space shuttle still, we could anchor inside the bay and repair it or keep it in position with the arm. It was the only vehicle of its kind that could snatch the objects or even place it back in high orbit. The highest a Shuttle ever orbited was around 380 miles on the Hubble repair missions. It was not designed to go much higher than that. CoRoT is more than 200 miles higher than that, so it would be out of reach of the space shuttle. Also it was never designed to be serviced in space, so no grapple points for the robot arm to attach to.
Waspie_Dwarf Posted January 6, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted January 6, 2013 STUPID STUPID STUPID And what exactly is stupid about this? It was designed to last 2.5 years but worked for 6. Not stupid in my book.
