When Distractions Die

Beastly Decimal

When Distractions Die

Lost within the day

My mind can find some peace

In this constant noise

My mind can find relief

But when distractions die

My mind recalls the grief

In the silent shadow

Lurks the monstrous beast

Hiding from the truth here

Amongst these pointless tasks

Monotony my shepherd

Innocence my mask

But life is catching up now

Catching up so fast

This lovely and distracted

Sleep cannot last

I long to escape here

Into my own flesh

To hide from these monsters

And hide from this mess

Avert my own eyes

And hold my own breath

Become these distractions

And forget the rest

To merge with this image

Escape from this truth

Enter eternal sleep

Enter eternal youth

But I cannot leave

No, I cannot fly

There will come a time

When distractions will die

When life will be revealed

For better or for worse

And we shall behold

This, our dark curse

And there shall be nothing

For us, left to say

Distractions will die

How I dread the day.

I enjoyed the structure of 8 lines.

The very center of this piece is my favorite:

To hide from these monsters

And hide from this mess

Avert my own eyes

And hold my own breath

It is as if the whole poem hinges on this and the title of "When Distractions Die" is something that conjures up horror for me: anything to keep going, to keep focused on some task, until you are so tired you just fall asleep, because being left alone with yourself is just too horrible.

I also liked the use of repitition here. It took me to a fantastical court where the royal herald is announcing the visitors that are entering the palace.

Enter eternal sleep

Enter eternal youth
