Still Waters Posted January 23, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2013 Vietnam says it is to begin producing home-grown poisons to be used in the execution of prisoners. The move comes after overseas producers refused to export the drugs which are legally required for lethal injections. More than 500 people are on death row in Vietnam for crimes including drug trafficking, rape and corruption. http://www.bbc.co.uk...d-asia-21163508

Keel M. Posted January 23, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2013 Why invent something? They've got enough jungle there, surely there are a few poisons in nature they could get that would kill a man...?
Coffey Posted January 23, 2013 #5 Share Posted January 23, 2013 Boy, they don't mess around do they. Cross that place off the vacation list. A friend of mine went there and loved it. But yeah this has put me off as well. lol
Simbi Laveau Posted January 24, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 24, 2013 A coworker of mine is Vietnamese ,and he refuses to go visit .He said the communist regime is still horrible to its own people . He said his father endured horrible hardships there. They love tourists though .Money money money . I have always wanted to go . I've studied their style of acupuncture ,which is different from Chinese and Japanese styles ,so I've wanted to visit the clinics there and observe . A friend of mine went there on her honeymoon . She visited all the famous places from the war . The killing fields ,and the school where they held all the executions . She said the walls of the school still have blood stains all over them ,and the killing fields are strewn with skulls and bones. I believe the place is quite haunted by tortured souls . This doesn't help those kinds of matters much .
+and-then Posted January 26, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 26, 2013 Crazy, blood thirsty leaders, 120 degrees in the shade and high humidity...what's not to love? I think I too will take a pass on this lovely country. No offense to it's citizens mind you, but I have quite enough heat, humidity and crazy where I live to do me for a lifetime

The best bet if you are going anywhere in SE Asia is to leave the drugs behind and don't let anyone tempt you into carrying any, no matter how much they pay.

By the way, the "killing fields" are in Cambodia, although that is also well in the past.I don't know how your friend could say the government here is horrible to its own people when she refuses to visit. This kind of lies about my country is really painful, although I know it stems from ignorance.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) has one of the best climates in Asia. Come here May - July and it will be hot (low 90s F) and dusty and dry, but the rest of the year is pleasant, with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s. It rains a lot and when it rains it really rains, from August through November. Right now is "winter" here and all is sunny and cool. Now there are other places in Vietnam where things are a good deal less pleasant.

He gets his stories directly from his mom and dad,who fled the country because of persecution .He has no desire to go . He chooses not to forgive .I just recounted the story ,and things there are not so great for locals even now. You're about to allow China to teach you how to fight .Or didnt you know that ? The country is,still communist . And the name Frank Merton is not terribly Vietnamese ,you also go out of your way to correct my posts ,which makes me think you are not who you say you are . I know Vietnamese people, and they are nothing like you ...nor do they speak like you ,even after living in the USA for decades . Ahem Opps ,my mistake ...cambodian army ... I mean given it was called the vietnam war ,it means cambodia had nothing to do with it .*coughs* Edited January 26, 2013 by Simbi Laveau
mike72 Posted February 3, 2013 #13 Share Posted February 3, 2013 Nothing wrong with Vietnam. I have never gone, but have had friends who go there on vacation, rent cars drive around the country with no problems. If you mind your own business, don't do anything illegal, you should be fine. This applies to most countries.
Frank Merton Posted February 3, 2013 #14 Share Posted February 3, 2013 The Vietnamese prohibit prostitution, child molesting, gambling (except for a few licensed casinos), the same drugs that are illegal in most of the world, being there without a visa, the usual criminal things, guns, and calling for the overthrow of the government. Not much different from most of the world.

I defer to a native in this of course, but I distinctly remember reading about combat operations from the '60s where this was stated. That is my only knowledge of the climate though. Is there a large variation in climate or topography?
