Still Waters Posted January 27, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 27, 2013 A new exhibition at the Natural History Museum to open later this month will attempt to show how rather than being destructive, extinction can help to increase biodiversity by allowing new species to evolve into the niches left by the animals that die out. Although 99 per cent of species that has ever lived on Earth is now extinct, the exhibition will show that without the demise of animals like the dinosaurs, which died out 66 million years ago, mammals and birds would never have come to dominate the planet. http://www.telegraph...scientists.html

freetoroam Posted January 27, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 27, 2013 without the demise of animals like the dinosaurs, which died out 66 million years ago, mammals and birds would never have come to dominate the planet ------------------------------------------------------------------ I would imagine if we had been around then, it would not have been for long, we would have made a great meal for the meat eaters and would not have had time to become the top of the food chain, let alone breed to achieve our numbers today. woopypooky Posted January 28, 2013 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2013 The article just point out the half thruth. Extinction that occurs naturally againts man-made. Go and raze all the forests in the world and see what happens. See what biodiversity is going to develop.

+OverSword Posted January 28, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 28, 2013 (edited) The article just point out the half thruth. Extinction that occurs naturally againts man-made. Go and raze all the forests in the world and see what happens. See what biodiversity is going to develop. Most life lives on the plains. Pine forests are relatively lifeless. Didn't you watch planet earth? No need to worry about the earth. If we abuse it to the point that it no longer supports human life we will be gone, the planet will remain creating and evolving life. King Fluffs Posted January 28, 2013 #9 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Extinction isn't always a bad thing, for example, if spiders became extinct, I'd be a very happy man.
pallidin Posted January 28, 2013 #10 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Well, the extinction of the Islamic radicals would not be a bad thing. IMO.
Starseed hybrid 1111 Posted January 28, 2013 #11 Share Posted January 28, 2013 as long as its natural not extinction by humans .in other words some people or groups might find this as a reason to kill of animals.let nature and the earth determine that.sure though animals and living organisms do not die they just evolve into something else.nothing really dies. Kikapo Posted January 28, 2013 #12 Share Posted January 28, 2013 Well, speaking entirely of the dinosaur I completely agree, but if "extinctions not always a bad thing" then why the heck are scientists so hell bent on bringing them back!? js. Jacques Terreur Posted January 29, 2013 #13 Share Posted January 29, 2013 Well, the extinction of the Islamic radicals would not be a bad thing. IMO. Same with Christian radicals....all types of radicals. Or better: the reasons that MADE them radicals. Well, speaking entirely of the dinosaur I completely agree, but if "extinctions not always a bad thing" then why the heck are scientists so hell bent on bringing them back!? js. I guess it's that old answer: "because they can!". If it can be done, it will be done eventually...
shadowlark Posted January 29, 2013 #14 Share Posted January 29, 2013 as long as its natural not extinction by humans .in other words some people or groups might find this as a reason to kill of animals.let nature and the earth determine that.sure though animals and living organisms do not die they just evolve into something else.nothing really dies. That's not true at all. There are many evolutionary branches that have died out.
