questionmark Posted February 5, 2013 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2013 After a crash landing that injured 16 people on Saturday, it appears that an aircraft has been painted to cover the logo of Italy's flag carrier Alitalia. The flight had been operated by a Romanian subcontractor to the Italian national airline. Sixteen people were injured, two seriously, when an Alitalia plane veered off the runway and crash landed into the grass in Rome on Saturday night, with its landing gear collapsed. In a mysterious development, however, the ATR 72 turboprop plane was repainted before daylight on Sunday, with any sign of the Alitalia logo or its green, white and red livery removed. The aircraft, whose logo could still be clearly seen immediately after the accident, had a fresh white coat of paint on Sunday, as it sat abandoned in a ditch next to the runway. The aircraft belongs to Romanian airline Carpatair and had been operating the route between Pisa and Rome on Alitalia's behalf. At the time of the accident, it was carrying 46 passengers and four crew members. Alitalia has blamed strong winds for the incident. Space Commander Travis Posted February 5, 2013 #2 Share Posted February 5, 2013 Well, that's quite normal when a landing doesn't quite go 100% according to plan; I seem to remember there was one place where a 747 ended up as part of the scenery, and the first thing they did was paint over the operator's name. Seems a bit fishy subcontracting it to a Romaian cowboy outfit for a domestic flight, though, doesn't it. Would you fly with Carpetair? Many aircraft in many airlines are leased, sometimes up to 100% of the fleet (Maya Island Air (Belize), for example, leases all its large aircraft from Iberia). Iberia has too many Maya has to few so they strike a deal. The content does not have to match the label. Same with many Lufthansa and Air France domestic flights, the aircraft do not belong to Lufthansa or Air France but are operated by some other company. Oh yes; it doesn't make it entirely clear whether it was just leased from then, or whether it was flown on their behalf by Questionableair, and whether the crew were Italian or Romanina. Either way, it does sound very much like trying to do it ont he cheap by subcontracting it to a dodgy Romanina outfit, doesn't it. "Alitalia's deal with Carpatair, signed in September, is aimed at reducing the airline's costs, but union representatives allege it is putting passenger safety at risk. Alitalia pilots and flight attendants said they would strike on Monday to protest the partnership with Carpatair." Ashotep Posted February 5, 2013 #6 Share Posted February 5, 2013 (edited) Sometimes when people go on strike instead of getting mad at them for inconveniencing you maybe you should be grateful because they may be saving your life. I guess this is a little off topic but when it was mentioned about strikes I thought about how some people will react to it. But Imagine to see a commercial of Alitalia, the safest airline in the world.
