Virginia coin moves closer to reality

Virginia Del. Robert G. Marshall fears that a financial apocalypse is coming and only one thing can save the Commonwealth: its own currency.

The idea that Virginia should consider issuing its own money was dismissed as just another quixotic quest by one of the most conservative members of the state legislature when Marshall introduced it three years ago. But it has since gained traction not only in Virginia, but also in states across the country as Americans have grown increasingly suspicious of the institutions entrusted with safeguarding the economy.

This week, the proposal by the Prince William Republican sailed through the House of Delegates with a two-to-one majority.

“This is a serious study about a serious topic,” Marshall said Tuesday. “We’re not completely powerless.”

Given that the minting of money has long been considered a sign of federal power this could be viewed as a seditious move. I can see Washington doing its best to block this move.

Wouldn't that be a violation of Article 1, Section 10?

Well, yes but... who says they will not put in articles of secession first?

Not sure how coming up with their own money would help them in the long run. I don't see the rest of the world being too impressed with trying to deal with a bunch of different American currencies.

Yeah, that worked out really well for them last time. Of course this time they might have more like minded people to follow suit, but I don't think we are there yet.

The world dealt with a bunch of different European currencies for centuries. Still seems a bit silly to me.

It would nor be the first time in the history of the US that each State had its own currency, in the old days it was abandoned because the State dollars had the tendency to rapidly loose their value the further you got away from the State.

That is true, but you had those centuries of history to back up those currencies and they were sovereign nations. So different situations. If the French franc came back in use it would still be accepted but if only Burgundy used the franc while the rest of France used the euro, then I wouldn't see that going very well for them.

At least Virginia is admitting that the federal government is now completely out of control and on a disaster course. Virginia has a very large economy ($420B or so) which could be greatly expanded if allowed to seek offshore resources like natural gas and oil and has a major port in the south. I think we'd do fine by cutting the strings to the US. Hell, we could form a federation with Texas and become a major world economy.

Let me guess, and they are also saying that they had "nothing to do" with that debt?

Virginia has the first city to say no to drones and ban them - as well as proposing legislation in the House of Delegates to stop any illegal gun confiscation in VA.

I live in Virginia as well.. With our history, saying no at the appropriate time was only a matter of time.

The problem with a republican state is the democrat rats fleeing the ship invade and then change the government. See, they can never admit that they destroyed the most prosperous state in the world with their ridiculous policies (California) but they abandon ship when it crashes and then vote democrat in the new state. Socialists never admit that socialism is flawed, they just say it wasn't done right and they'll fix it next time. Socialism is kinda like cancer, only worse. First law is strict immigration policies to keep leftists out. Race, creed or color is irrelevant but if you voted for Obama, Reid or Pelosi then stay the F out. Fantasy, I know, but who would ever believe the worst president in history, literally, would be reelected.

Exactly the same could be said about the capitalists - the big difference is they have taken down the world economy in their lust for money.

Fundamentally it misses the real culprit - money lent into existence with interest - always has debased the currency and always will.

So partisan you can't see the wood for the trees.

Virginia is a lovely land..

The Blue Ridge Mountains have the second highest variety of wildlife, flora, and fauna in the world only next to the Rain Forest.

Ireland is so far from been socialist its not funny. My country went on a free market deregulated debt and property bing curtsy of those nice neo-liberal Chicago boys economic models of the perfect self rectifying market system. We are paying a heavy personal price for the foolishness of seeing if the markets can behave responsibly enough all by themselves.

A bit of regulation would have done wonders.

Ignorance is bliss as they say :tu:
