SARS-like virus spreads person-to-person

The first case of human to human transmission of a potentially fatal respiratory illness similar to the deadly SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) was confirmed in Britain today.

The patient is in a stable condition in intensive care in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, and is believed to have caught the infection from a close family relative who had travelled to the Middle East.

Glad to be hiding away in Wales. Don't think the folk here travel much - judging by their apprehension at even crossing the border into *gasp* England :P

Another virus our NHS is going to get crippled for.

A third patient, the first in the UK who was flown here from Quatar for treatment, has been seriously ill in St Thomas’ Hospital, London since September.

WHY? why are they getting flown here? save the money for the tax payers who are putting the money into the system...is Quatar a poor country? I do hope we are sending them the bill!

It is not as if they did not know about this virus, so why are no checks being done when they come back there?

This is one is the first to have contracted it from another person who came from the middle east, but someone else has already been in our hospital with the virus...who came from Quatar in September to have treatment here....from what i understand.

Yes, once again the British tax payer is going to have to pay for this, we are already paying for the person from Quatar.

But the main point is:

how many more people are coming from the middle east with this virus?

How long have they known about it in the middle east?

Is everyone from the middle east who have this virus going to be flown over here for treatment?

Maybe the person flown over from the middle east to the north-west European isles was British? It doesn't state that he is not, and it would make sense to fly him over.

If they had been British, they would have said so, they always do. From the description above, they are not. it would not be the first time someone has come here for free treatment from abroad!!

It could be one or the other, as you said, is does not state anyone concerning the person's nationality.

Edit: And if he is a Qatari, he is most likely pretty well off and paying for his treatment.

If he was British it would have said, our press are very insistent on mentioning things like that. People get mentioned if they are British even if they do not live here.

You would think with their money they would have their own hospitals and treatments.

Of course they do have hospitals in Qatar, but the very best treatment may not be available there. People want to be treated in hospitals away from their country all the time. I once went to Denmark for seeing a specialist. It's nothing unusual. I really do not see the problem. They did not point out the nationality, so all we can do is assume.

If he was British they would have mentioned it, they ALWAYS do.

The 49-year-old, from Qatar, is being treated in an intensive care unit at St Thomas' hospital in London after he became infected with a new type of coronavirus similar to the one that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars).

A spokeswoman for the hospital said that the man, who is being treated in isolation, is receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (Ecmo), which delivers oxygen to the blood outside the body when the lungs are not able to. It also continuously pumps blood into and around the body.

The man, who was suffering from acute respiratory syndrome and renal failure, was admitted to an intensive care unit in Doha, Qatar, on 7 September. He was transferred to the UK by air ambulance on 11 September

On Monday, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said one person who had recently travelled to the Middle East and Pakistan was being treated in an intensive care unit at a Manchester hospital after becoming infected with a new type of coronavirus.

Now officials have confirmed that a relative of the patient, who is also a UK resident, has become infected and is being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

Why do they have to bring them all back here? treat them in the country they virus is in!!!

YES THEY CAN!

There was a story about muslim women who had been subject to acid attacks (absolutely awful stories) and the surgeon who went there was from England, he was Pakistani but trained here, and had to go there because these women could not come here. It was all funded by charity in England.

The qataris are not poor, but the main point is: let them pay for the surgeons to go there, we DO NOT want the virus brought here at all!

I dug a little, and found that he is indeed Qatari. But still, my point stands, nothing out of the ordinary here.

Was the treatment in Denmark free?

You do not want that. And it's not like it is rapidly spreading. There are also cases in other European countries, Germany included.

I really do not know anything about the Qatari hospitals. For treating and analysing viruses, you need a lot of equipment. I don't know if they have top of the notch virological institutes. Do you?

My insurance covered it. I would have payed for it myself, though.

You my friend can come here anytime.

Not here, but its not new in the middle east.

it would be better if the equipment was sent there, they have surgeons. better that than they all come here, because that is what will happen if it does start spreading rapidly in the other countries.
