Silent Hill: Novel by BurnSide

Howdy folks.

About 4 months ago Janiel asked me to explain in detail the evnts of a Videogame called 'Silent Hill'. And i did, adding brief chapters once or twice a week which got more and more indepth as i went along. By the time it was finished i was quite proud of my novelisation of the videogame. But i was unsatisfied. So, i've gone back to the beginning and now instead of writing the story in brief, i'm actually writing the full length novel of Silent Hill in hopes that Konami, the creators of the game, may grant me the use of the name and publishing rights. I've decided to start posting the story here for anyone interested, it makes it easier for me to keep track of it as well instead of going through the 'Silent Hill' forum.

Authors Notes:

This is an incomplete work. Hell the first chapter isn't fully complete yet. However i've fully written the story once and this is the second time over. BUT it shall not be the last time. All mistakes made will be corrected in the final draft, as well as new bits added. Commentary on the story is very welcome and critism is also welcome, anything to make the story a little better. My timeline is subject to change, and various new events have been added into my story that were not in the videogame to make for a better story. Some names of places and people have also been changed from the original game. Lastly, please remember that this is not all entirely my work, but based on the story by Konami Corp. Japan.

Silent Hill is a registered trademark of the Konami Corporation Japan.

One last note:

This is a HORROR story and does contain disturbing and graphic descriptions.

SILENT HILL

Chapter One (Complete! 10th Oct '04)

Last Edit at 11:15am Oct 12th '04, Number of Edits: 6)

Harry Mason was dead tired. He had been driving non-stop for at least 5 hours now, and it had gotten very late, the bright blue sky had long since given out to the cold darkness of the night. He flashed a look away from the road to the the clock, which read 10:52pm. It was a hell of a drive from Sewell to Silent Hill, he really would have preferred to leave the following morning but his damn work schedule conflicted with their vacation plans; it was either tonight or never. The streetlamps flashed by the mountain road and blurred together in the darkness as Harry struggled to keep his focus on the Jeep and the road ahead. The road was perched alongside one of the mountains bordering the quiet resort town and it's large lake, and if he lost control of the Jeep it was one hell of a tumble down the side of the mountain into the think expanse of trees below. On the otherside of his red and white Jeep the wall of the cliff loomed up high above him into the pitch blackness of the night.

Harry sneaked a quick glance at his daughter. Cheryl was fast asleep, hugging her sketchbook to her little blue dress. Her short dark hair fell over her eyes and Harry reached over to brush it away from her face. It was Cheryl who had pretty much insisted on going that night. That way she explained that she would be able to wake up in their motel tomorrow and get as much time from their vacation as possible, instead of spending half a vacation day travelling. Harry agreed. His daughter was one smart cookie and even though she was only seven (seven and a half, as she always reminded him) she seemed to make most of the decisions for the both of them. Well, he thought to himself, that's women for you.

He stifled a little smile and returned his focus to the road ahead, slowly becoming mesmerized once more by the white lines droning slowly beneath his Jeep infront on the road and the quiet rumble of the engine. The sheer darkness of the drop down the mountain beside him made him a little nervous so he kept a close eye on the road as the Jeep rumbled on towards Silent Hill. It would be quite a view during the day, he thought.

Harry noticed a light in his rear view mirror. He realised it was a headbeam from a motorcycle, and felt something of relief. It had been about 45 minutes since he'd seen any traffic on the road, which was pretty much the only way in or out of Silent Hill on the north side of Toluca Lake. Friday night, 11pm, no traffic at all coming from or going too the busy resort town. A little eerie, if that was the right word for it. Cheryl mumbled something in her sleep and shifted a little. He smiled and turned his head to nod at the passing motorcyclist. It was a cop, he realised. A female police officer wearing leather biking clothes and a white police helmet on one of those wide police bikes. She nodded back to him as she passed on his left and then in a few second had turned the bend and the tail light was out of sight.

Harry took another glace at the clock. 11:13pm. Shouldn't be too far now, another 15 minutes or so. He contemplated waking Cheryl; she had told him she wanted to see Silent Hill when they arrived, but there really wasn't much to see at the moment so he let her sleep abit more. He would wake her when they arrived. One of her feet were tucked up beneath her on the seat, he hated it when she put her sandals on the seat. Then he noticed she had kicked it off. Such a good girl, he thought, and not for the first time. Harry returned his gaze to the road, and spied a light in the distance. More traffic, he guessed. The Jeep droned on and he noticed the light source seemed to be parked beside the cliff on the road. But as he passed the light he discovered it wasn't more traffic, it was the same police bike that had passed him about 10 or 15 minutes before. Odd, the lights were still on, but it was almost casually discarded against the cliffwall, no sign of the police officer. Maybe he should stop? Yeah he would stop. He turned his head back to the road and started to ease down and pull over.

Without warning a figure appeared infront of him. A young woman clad in a dark blue dress and a red necktie was all Harry had time to register before he was frantically spinning the wheel. She shrieked and raised her arms to shield her face as the Jeep skidded towards her. Where had she come from!? Harry floored the brake and spun the Jeep to the side. The Jeep spun on the road, throwing him against the driver seat door, bashing his head hard. Stars swam infront of his eyes but he shook them away as the Jeep thudded against something. Suddenly it tipped onto it's side, rolled onto it's hood, and that was the last thing Harry was aware of before the Jeep literally bounced off the road and off the cliff into the darkness below.

Harry reached up, touched his head. His hand came away sticky and wet. Blood. His mind swam with random thoughts and feelings. He struggled to go over the events that had lead his Jeep to be lying at the bottom of the cliff amidst a bunch of smashed trees just by a road. Bike on the road, cop nowhere to be seen, woman in blue stepped out infront of the Jeep, Jeep went over, hit my head, hard. He opened his eyes and was suprised to be greeted by a brilliant white daylight instead of the suffocating darkness of the night he remembered from only moments before. How long had he been out for? Surely not all night. He looked down and saw he was still strapped into the driver seat at least, white light poured in the windows. Cheryl! He wiped his aching head around to the passenger seat; it was empty. No Cheryl, no sketchbook, the door was wide open. And Cheryls white sandal was still on the floor of the Jeep. Had she gone off to get help? Harry quickly unbuckled his seat beat and against the resistance of his pounding headache, shoved the door open and hopped out.

Harry walked a few feet, then turned around to inspect the wreckage. He was shocked to still be alive! The Jeep was a complete write-off. It looked like a couple of giants had played soccer with it like children do with Cola Cans. The front, sides, roof were all crushed and mangled. The tumble down the cliff had evidently been rough. He hoped Cheryl was okay, where ever she had gotten to. He looked around quickly for her, not moving. What if she came back but he had left to go look for her, he thought. It was really foggy too, he could barely see 10 feet infront of him. Nothing but white mist in all directions, the daylight barely piercing the mist. He knew that Toluca Lake gave off an eerie mist, but never seen the town so devoured by it before. He looked up the cliff where the Jeep had plummeted from. His path was evident from the trail of broken trees and bits of the Jeep strewn everywhere. Maybe she was still up there, hurt on the cliff having been thrown out of the door during the fall? The Jeep had crashed through a small wooden fence and sat half on the road half in the bushes through the fence.

Footsteps. Behind him on the road. Harry spun around and squinted through the fog. He couldn't see anything, but he had definitely heard footsteps. Maybe it was Cheryl trying to find her way through the fog. The road he was on lead to Silent Hill anyway, maybe a 10 minute walk down the road. He started jogging towards the footsteps, which seemed to have stopped for the moment. Harry was suddenly glad he was wearing his brown leather bomber jacket, the air was suprisingly cold for August. Must be the reason for the mist. He jogged down the road, ignoring the pain in his head, wiping his bloody hand on his jeans. 'Cheryl!' he called out. No answer. Come to think of it, wasn't it this very road seven years ago that he and his wife had found the little baby? Huddled in a blanket in the gutter, he remembered..

Harry had met Susan, his wife, only two summers before the day they found Cheryl. They had met in Silent Hill in a small little coffee shop after she had waved him over, seeing as they were both sitting alone. She had lived there, but he was on a business trip; he was a writer and his publisher was located in Silent Hill. Harry was immediately attracted to her dark slim features, the way she smiled and flicked her hair whenever he complimented something about her. They had hit it off almost right away and the following summer, after many trips back and forth to Silent Hill, they had gotten married and settled down in Harrys hometown of Sewell. It was the perfect marriage and the following summer they returned to Silent Hill to visit Susans parents whom had also taken a liking to Harry. On the way home they parked along the exit road of Silent Hill to stop in the nearby graveyard and pay respects to Susans grandparents. There they talked for an eternity in the silence of the cemetery before returning to the Jeep. But something was different. In the gutter was a little bundle of cloth and a tiny newborn baby. They had decided to raise the child as their own and told her at a young age that she was adopted. The three of them continued the tradition of visiting Silent Hill every August for a few days but three years ago Susan had became very sick and passed away. Cheryl was more mature about it than Harry was, from time to time she would still cuddle him when she found him sobbing silently in the bedroom he had once shared with his wife. The trips to Silent Hill had continued after, just the two of them, and although Cheryl had enjoyed the trips and loved seeing her grandparents it was the most painful thing harry had to do. He would leave Cheryl with Susans parents for a day and go off on his own to all the places he and Susan used to go together. The coffee house where they first met, Lakeside Amusement Park where they snuck away and shared a passionate night beside the misty lake, and of course the graveyard where he and Susan had talked forever that day when they had found Cheryl. Susan now lay forever at peace in that graveyard and Harry had shed there what must have been a million tears for his lost love.

He found himself staring at that same graveyard now. It was located just a few steps down the street from where his crashed vehicle lay. It was the sound of more light footsteps that brought him back to the reality of the situation. Cheryl was out there alone somewhere and he needed to find her. If only it wasn't so damn foggy! 'Cheryl!' he called, starting into a jog again through the mist. He followed the sound of the footsteps and finally saw the first buildings forming out of the white haze. Well, at least the crash hadn't been to far from Silent Hill, he should be able to get some help from some of the locals and find Cheryl in no time. She was a smart girl, she would probably be doing the same thing, looking for help. Harry wasn't worried, Silent Hill was a very safe town.

It wasn't long before Harry started to noticed the first real signs that something wasn't quite right about Silent Hill. The silence of the town was complete, deafening even. Not a single car roared in the distance, no birds chirped in the streets, even the wind was completely still, the leaves sat on the trees like they were frozen in time. And where was everyone exactly? It was Saturday morning in the peek holiday season in a busy resort town. It was then that it dawned on Harry that he had been in that Jeep all night on the side of the only north entrance and exit of the town and not one person had passed and helped him. Harry walked up to the first building on the edge of the town, a store called 'Jacobs Convenience' where he had stopped on their last trip to Silent Hill to grab snacks for the trip home. It was an old building, probably at least 70 years old, with crumbling stone walls. The door swung inward with a jingle of bells as he rapped on it with his knuckles. 'Hello?' he called, but to no avail. It was clear there was no one in the store. Rows of chips and candy bars, no sign of anything out of order. But no clerk. Harry closed the door behind him. Sweat started to form on his brow despite the cold stillness of the misty air. What the hell was going on? It had to be somekind of big event over at the lake, of course. All the towns residents were down at the lake. Or maybe they were all staying inside, avoiding the eerie mist and cold air. It was then he noticed a small figure standing by a white picket fence on the otherside of the road. The mist was so thick he barely even noticed. 'Cheryl!' he called out, and started across the street. It was definitely Cheryl, he saw her clearer as he got near. Black short cropped hair, little blue denim dress, kneehigh white socks and white sandals. He was so happy to see her it didn't even register that she was wearing both sandals, but one had been left back in the Jeep. She had his back turned to him as he approached. 'Cheryl, are you okay?' Harry asked his daughter, but strangely she didn't respond, didn't even look back at him. Instead she took off running down the street, her sandals slapping the concrete.

Harry was stunned. He was all she had, what would posess Cheryl to run away from him like that? Harry gave chase but the little girl was fast. Cheryl had always been a pretty fast runner, sometimes when she was growing up they would race and Harry would pretend to not be as fast as her but as she got older he really did have to try to keep up! He could still make out the little figure ahead of him in the fog as he chased behind her. Why on earth was she running from him? Maybe she was disoriented from the crash still. Yes that had to be it. Ahead of him Cheryl left the road and ran down a small alley between two buildings. Harry paused at the opening to the alley. It was pretty small. He'd never been down there before but was pretty sure it was a dead end. It was one of those little alleys behind the houses where the garbage pickup was every tuesday. He jogged down the alley, hopping over a pile of trash in the middle of the path. It was omious and silent and Harry couldn't shake the nagging feeling that something was very, very wrong with the town. Still no sign of a single other human or any life at all. It was nagging at his brain, telling him to get the hell out of Silent Hill. Maybe there was somekind of contamination in the area and everyone was indoors, sick and dying from the plague? Maybe they had all evacuated the area because of some natural disaster? He bit his tongue and ran a little faster, then heard the sound of a rust gate swing open and slam closed with a grinding of metal only a few feet ahead of him in the fog. A couple seconds later he came to the gate itself. It had a large 'BEWARE OF THE DOG' sign on it Harry noticed as he pushed it open. There was no where else for Cheryl to go, she must have gone down this way.

Harry closed the black rusty gate behind him, looked down and let his jaw drop in absolute horror. Looks like he didn't have to beware of the dog anymore. The dog looked like it had swallowed a bomb and had exploded from the inside out. Blood and organs and bone fragments stained the concrete ground and wall it was tethered to, it's leash still attached to some unrecognizable lump of red flesh. Harry fought the urge to throw up all over himself and inspected the remains of the corpse a little closer. It stank like it had been dead for a day at least. Cheryl had come this way? He suddenly felt the urge to find her even stronger and side stepped the dead animal. It certainly wasn't what he had expected to see in this place at all, but the cause of it would have to wait until he found Cheryl. That little voice in his head screamed at him to turn around, but he had to find his daughter.

The new path around the back of the houses Harry followed was very narrow. The walls on either side of him were a dark sooty grey stone that stretched up into the mist above, he couldn't see how far. He was walking now down the winding, twisting path, his footsteps echoing on the cold concrete. Something about the path didn't seem right. Was it supposed to go this far? He had a feeling he'd be emerging from the otherside of the houses any second. The path took another turn and the path became even smaller, cluttered with rust coloured pipes and the like. Harry shivered and stuck his hands in his pockets. It was really cold! If he didn't find Cheryl soon she would surely catch her death of cold. 'Cheryl?' he whispered into the alley, but not a sound replied to him. Rounding yet another corner he came to a high steel gate crowned with barbed wire. It was unlocked and he stepped through, pushing the gate open and whincing at the high pitched squeal of resistance it gave him, and gently closed it behind him. Then he froze and looked up at the sky. It started to rain, little spits of rain fell onto his face from the white haze of mist above him. He watched the sky, amazed because just like that the mist seemed to be disappearing. The white of the mist slowly faded as he watched, until there was no mist at all, but he did not see a clear blue sky as he expected. Instead he was greeted by a thick blackness, so dark he could see even less than he could through the mist. In a matter of seconds the mist had faded to nothing and the daylight had changed to midnight. How could that be? He waved a hand infront of his face, couldn't even see it through the complete suffocating darkness. It was so cold now the air seemed to bite at him, it was painful. Harry had to admit it, he was afraid. He couldn't see anything, couldn't hear anything, the only assurance that he was still awake was the feeling of the rain on his head and the sounds of it lightly patting across the concrete path. He held out his hands and felt the cold stone wall on his left, and decided to press on. poor Cheryl! He was afraid for himself, but the thought of Cheryl out there in the darkness shivering in the rain terrorized him. Then he remembered, he had the matches! Just before they left the Sewell to journey to Silent Hill, Harry had brought Susans father a cigar and a pack of waterproof matches. That man loved his cigars. Quickly Harry reached into his pocket and pulled out the small box of matches. They wouldn't be much use but they were long-life and windproof, they would at least give him some relief to the darkness and maybe a little warmth too. He struck one against the wall, satisfied with the tiny light the match gave off. It illuminated the wall on eitherside of him and a little of the ground in a creepy orange glow. Harry pressed on down the path feeling a little bolder.

Harry hadn't gone far before he heard a sort of spinning rusty wheel sound up ahead of him. The match went out and quickly he lit a new one, feeling a little more comfortable in the unnatural darkness with the light. The sound got louder and he saw that the source of the noise was in the corner of the next turn. He slowly crept up to the object strewn against the wall. It was a wheelchair. A rusted red wheelchair that sat on one of it's sides, the other wheel up in the air and turning slightly creating the squeaky rusty sound. Harry reached out and stopped the wheel from turning, then just started at it. He really couldn't think of a creepier thing to have in a long winding alley through darkness. What was it doing here? The match went out and Harry ran a hand through his short matted hair. It was wet from the rain which still fell gently to the ground through the darkness. Harry lit another match, turning his back against the strange sight, trying and failing miserably to make sense of it. He continued down the alley, his brown leather boots splashing in the puddles forming along the path. This was all crazy, completely crazy, he thought to himself. Insane. It was like the crash had knocked him into some nightmare world where anything was possible.

Nothing had prepared him for what he would see around the next corner.

A hospital bed lay to one side of the path, Harry saw with his matches. One of those metal beds that came up to his waist with wheels on the bottom and velcro restraints. As he got closer he saw a second hospital bed along the path. The first one had a nasty red stain right in the middle of it and when Harry moved a little closer to the second bed he saw that there was a sheet covering something on the bed. Then he noticed the smell. It was awful. It reminded him of one summer when he was 12, he had fallen off his bike and landed a foot away from a skunk that had been hit by a car and left to bake in the hot sun for a few days. The smell made his eyes water and made him spit up all of his lunch, it was a mixture of rott, old eggs, skunk spray and sour milk. It was the same smell that came of that hospital bed, from under the sheet that was covering something lying there. He almost had no doubts what was under that sheet without seeing the blood on the sheet outlining a telltale humanoid figure. If that was a body under that sheet on that table, as he suspected, it must have been skinned alive to cause that much blood. Harry had no intention of finding out. His mind was numb. There he was, in a neverending alley he'd been following for at least 15 minutes, soaked wet with rain, plunged into absolute suffocating darkness, with two hospital beds one sporting a bloody corpse covered with a sheet. Well, he thought. Certainly has been a great vacation so far. Then the match went out and the darkness moved in to surround him. '****' he hissed and fetched a new one quickly from his box of matches. His cold hands fumbled with the box as he rushed to get it open and get some light again. Being left in the darkness with this stinking corpse was not a wonderful thought. In his panic he dropped the matches on the ground, heard them all clatter on the wet path. Silently cursing his clumsy stupidity, his breathing rapid, he crouched and scooped up a handful, striking them against the wall. After 3 or 4 attempts one lit. Quickly he swung the match over to the hospital beds.

The corpse on the bed, was gone.

Harry didn't know what to do. He stood still and started at the empty hospital bed. The blood stained sheet was flung aside on the ground and Harry could see blood on the bed in the shape of a person. So much blood! What happened to the body? Did it get up in his confusion? Did someone pull it away when Harry was occupied with the matches? Harry had never been more scared in his life. He was not partial to bodies stashed in alleyways that got up and went for a walkabout by themselves. He felt on the verge of a breakdown, simply staring wide-eyed at the empty bed. This can't be happening. Then his thoughts turned to Cheryl. She was in this alley and damned if he was going to turn back now. That did it. Cauiously he took a step forward, and another, until he was clear of the beds and continuing down the alley, needless to say alot slower than he was. Now he had two people to find, he realised. That man might be stumbling around in the darkness, hurt. Maybe he could offer some assistance. That was the rational side of his mind working which thought tirelessly against the irrational thoughts telling him that there was a dead skinless man in the darkness, possibly watching him.

Slowly he crept along the path, the rain still beating down. It was the only noise Harry could hear in the endless darkness. With one hand he held out another match, all too aware that he had only one or two left after this one. The other hand he used to guide himself along the stone wall. It felt sticky and slimy against his hand and he shuddered involuntarily at the thought that maybe the stickiness wasn't rainwater as he originally suspected.

Then Harry was at another gate. This one was a little open. Had the injured man from the hospital bed come this way? He illuminated the gate with the dying match and saw a patch of wet red goo on the handle. Then he pushed it open. The match went out again and quickly he lit another, and put his hand against the wall again. There was a sharp stabbing pain in his hand suddenly and he pulled it away, putting the match up against the wall. Harry let out a small gasp. The wall was gone! In it's stead was a wire mesh fence of some sort, rusted brown in colour and covered with barbed wire. What would this be doing here? And what was on the otherside of the fence? Try as he might Harry only saw more darkness stretching out beyond the fence. He took a step and was aware that his footsteps no longer made a knocking sound but more of a clang, like stepping on metal grating. Harry had enough suprises for the rest of his life. Somehow this little trip down the alley to find his daughter had pretty much put him at the gate of hell! Reluctantly Harry pushed on, around another corner dimly aware of the rusted iron fences on either side of him, careful not to get to close to the barbed wire. He felt like he was being watched by hundreds of little eyes, the darkness beyond the fence was frightening, he felt very vunerable.

Harry was suddenly aware of a noise in the distance. It slowly got louder and louder, like it was coming closer. A shrill whining noise like a cat howl. He realised at it got louder that it was the unmistakable sound of world war two air-raid sirens rising and falling somewhere in the night. Why were they sounding in the distance?

Suddenly his boot connected with something squishy which rolled away from him a little. He swung the match over to see what it was, and jumped back in disgust. An unidentifiable piece of meat was on the floor, a rotting piece of flesh that he couldn't tell from whom or what it had come from. It gave off a foul odor of being there for longer than he would have liked, rainwater dribbled off it in red pools that dripped through the grating below him. Still, it would not stop his fierce determination to find Cheryl. She had come down here, he knew it. Rounding another corner he suddenly found himself in a clearing. The sirens grew louder and louder and Harry had to wonder if they were only in his tortured aching mind. They seemed to be coming from just beyond the fences in the darkness. The path ahead of him opened up into sort of a semi-circle. At last, he thought. This must be the gate out!

The match burned right down to his fingers and he suddenly felt the flame burning at his skin. 'Ah!' he dropped the match and reaching into his pocket he pulled out the last one. He bent over and struck it against the grid-iron gratings he was standing on, vaguely aware that below him seemed to be more of the darkness like he was very high above something. He noticed another lump of flesh too, and quickly stood up to illuminate the fence infront of him at the end of the clearing. He had hoped for a gate.

What he got was an eyeless fleshy mass if skull staring at him in the face. It's mouth formed in sort of a disgusting grin as the lips had been cut away exposing teeth stained red with it's own blood.

Harry took a step back in wide eyed horror. It was grotesque. It was definitely a human corpse, althougth that's where the similarities between the thing and it ended. Harry stared at the decomposing figure wide-eyed, the flame in his hand making small beams of light dance over it's red face giving the impression that it was talking to him. The skin was missing from the body leaving nothing but the muscle and flesh underneath exposed. What was this!? It looked like the figure had been cruxified onto the fence and then skinned alive, bits of flesh torn away from the body mid section of the corpse like it had been eaten away. Bits of goo dripped from the body to the grating. Was this the figure from the hospital bed? How had he gotten here? Harry saw the outstretched arms were nailed to wooden slabs on either side of it.

There was a small noise behind him he only just heard over the shrieking air raid sirens. It was like the laughter of a small child after playing a game of hide and seek. Harry spun around, feeling uncomfortable enough at having the dead figure staring at his back but desperately searching for the source of the noise. He held out the match in one shaky hand as far as he dared without moving, his breathing was so laboured he was forced to hold his breath to listen, but all that did was make him horribly aware of his racing heartbeat.

Another laugh. It sounded demonic, evil somehow. Then, illuminated by the match, he saw a small figure dart across the clearing from the way he had come in. About the size of Cheryl, and seemingly clad in white.

'C-Cheryl, is that you?' Harry whispered, but his reply was swallowed by the darkness. More demonic child laugher coming from the small figure in reply. As it slowly stumbled nearer Harry saw it wasn't clad in white, it's skin was white! It was a small naked child with white skin and a face that looked like it had been smudged in a photograph. He couldn't see any eyes or distinguishable mouth. What the hell? Harry saw a glint of light in the creatures hand, a dagger. Oh hell, there was more of them! He counted three before the match went out, plunging Harry into total darkness with the tiny hellish creatures.

He didn't know what to do. He started breathing fast, sweat pouring off his brow. Panicked, he backed up, felt the flesh of the cruxified corpse sticky against the back of his neck. Then there was a sound like flesh ripping away from bone, and Harry felt sticky fleshy arms around his waist, and realised the corpse had somehow come alive and grabbed him! Harry struggled against the decomposing meaty arms and heard more demonic laughter in the darkness, a sort of chuckle of delight coming nearer and nearer. Harry felt a sharp jab of pain go through his stomach and he screamed in agony. He had been stabbed! The pain was joined by another in his thigh, and another, it was unbearable. And he couldn't move, couldn't breathe.. couldn't see or hear.. nothing but pain but that was gently slipping away from him along with the rest of the nightmare.

He was going to wake up, he thought. The nightmare was over. He'd wake up in his bed and it will all have been just a bad dream.

The air raid sirens died down to nothing in the distance.

The rain stopped and the darkness became complete. Devouring him.

His last thought was of Cheryl.

And then there was nothing.

Thanks Dot.

I've thrown a few things in there of my own, mainly the body on the hospital gurney getting up, i think that was pretty freaky. The flashback scene is all mine too, the rest is pretty much right out of the game.

I just made a few edits, i added the air-raid sirens in the background Harry sees before he realises the world around him has shifted. Edited a few spelling and grammar errors and added an extra line of detail here and there.

I feel the flashbacks are a very good addon. It really draws you in and even if you have played the game and seen these things this story draws you into it deeper than the game personally.

No worries Jan, if you're not interested it's cool. thumbsup.gif I realise it does start out slow.

Thanks for your input KCET. I agree that the flashback scenes are almost a nessesary in a novel like this generally to make the reader get more comfortable with Harry was a person instead as a 2D videogame sprite. Plus i thought it was nessesary to note early in the story that Cheryl was not his biological daughter but found along the road of Silent Hill, which is of course very important later in the story.

Also little extra things like the matches going out and the body dissapearing pull you in better and let your imagination run wild. original.gif

Chapter 2 i have started. I've scrpted the dialogue and am now adding additional descriptions and events into what happens. It will be from Harry waking up in the diner to checking out the ally again and finding the notebook.

SILENT HILL

Chapter Two (Complete! 11th Oct 04, 4:11pm)

(Last Edited on 12th Oct, 4:32pm. Number of Edits: 4)

Harry reached up, touched his head. His hand came away sticky and wet. Blood. What just happened to him? Had it all been a dream? He sat up with a start, remembering suddenly the skinless body clutching onto him, the tiny white bodies coming towards him, laughing in darkness, and the pain. The pain was incredible! He reached down and felt around his white shirt under the brown bomber jacket. Nothing. No blood, no pain, no stab wounds. He breathed a sight of relief and realised he was in strange surroundings. He had been lying on his back on a leather seat of a booth in some kind of restaurant. A few tables, chairs, a counter at the far end. How had he gotten here?

He let his eyes slowly adjust to the bright white light coming in the window behind him. He looked out, saw the thick suffocating fog was still there. But it wasn't dark, it was light out again. And, was it snowing? Sure enough has Harry stared out the window he watched tiny snowflakes fall though the white mist and settle lightly onto the black road and melt away to nothing. It wasn't settling on the ground but the fact that it was snowing was strange enough. It was august! He stood up from the leather couch and tried to piece his mind together. He remembered the cop's bike discarded along the road, the woman in blue shielding her face as she stepped out in front of him. That woman, dressed like she had just stepped out of the 50's, had he hit her? Was she fleeing the town because of some catastrophic event that had made everyone evacuate? So far she was the only person he had seen to have any connection with the town, besides the corpse in the alley if that had been real, which he had started to doubt. And then after swerving the Jeep to miss her he had gone over the cliff. What happened after that? Did he dream the whole alley in his unconscious state?

The bell at the entrance to the restaurant jingled and the door opened simutaniously. Harry suddenly tensed himself, expecting a man to walk in with no skin and no eyes or something like that. He cursed his vivid imagination as a pretty blonde woman entered the diner instead, gently closing the glass door behind her in another dingle of the bell above it. She was wearing black leather biking pants and a leather jacket to match, and held a white helmet in one had. He immediately recognized her as the police officer who had passed him on the road last night! The officer who minutes later had discarded her bike recklessly for some unknown reason. Harry breathed a sigh of relief to see another living person in town and watched her cross to the counter, place her helmet down and strip off her leather jacket revealing a dark blue cop shirt with a badge and a pair of big round sunglasses sticking out of her shirt pocket. She noticed him then, and with a smile walked towards Harry the same way a woman would walk up to a small lost child to ask him where his mother is. She folded her arms, still wearing leather gloves, and inspected him closely.

"How are you feeling?" She asked. Her tone startled Harry. It was reassuring, the first thing that actually made sense to him in this crazy town since he'd gotten here. He looked at her delicate features for a few seconds, formulating a response. How was he feeling? He had no idea. But she was patient, Harry noticed her blink blue eyes at him and flick a blonde strand over her ear. Susan used to do that.

"Like i've been run over by a speeding truck I guess." He finally replied. "But i think i'm okay. One hell of a hangover." He rubbed his head, feeling a swelling lump just under the hairline.

"Glad to see you're up and about. You've been there for a couple hours. I found you just outside lying in the road, looks like you took a nasty bump." She gestured to his small head wound Harry got from the crash, then turned around and took a seat on one of the barstools, crossing her legs. "You from around here?" she asked him. "Why don't you tell me what happened. I saw you on the road, right?"

Harry nodded, and took a seat beside her, ready to tell his tale. "I'm just a tourist" he began, remembering that he was actually here on vacation. Some vacation. "I came here for a vacation with my daughter. After you passed me last night, a woman stepped out in front of my Jeep. I swerved to miss her, went over the cliff. That's pretty much all of it." He decided he liked this young cop and certainly didn't want to scare her off with insane stories of dead bodies getting up and naked children stabbing him in the darkness of some weird other dimension. "I don't know how I got outside this diner." he added, truthfully. How had he gotten outside? Was he stumbling around in the dark last night, his mind making up the images he'd seem before collapsing on the road? The cop seemed to accept his story, he watched her ease up a little. She must have thought he was driving drunk or something.

She nodded to him, and then turned her neck to look out the window. "The town..." she started to say, more to herself than to Harry. "What's going on in this town? Strange fog covering everything, not a person in sight..." She trailed off and looked at him, locking her eyes with his in a serious gesture. "And i've seen some things out there that defy explanation. I was coming here in response to a distress call we received last night, but when i got here the town was deserted. Look at this diner," she waved her hands guesturing to the empty interior of the room. "It's usually packed in here with people at all times. What is going on here? I can't get my head around it."

"I'm afraid I don't have any answers." Harry replied to her questioning gaze. "I think i might have seen some strange things too." He started thinking about the alley again, and the creatures at the end. Maybe it actually had happened. Maybe she had seen something strange too. His thoughts suddenly turned to Cheryl. His daughter was still out there somewhere, lost and possibly in danger. "Hey, have you seen a little girl in the town anywhere?" he asked the cop. "Short black hair, blue dress, seven years old. My daughter, she was with me in the Jeep and i'm sure she's out there somewhere by herself.."

She cut him off abruptly. "Sorry, the only person i've seen in this town is you." She bit her lip, obviously holding back from saying anything that might upset Harry. "What's your name?" asked the cop.

"Harry. Harry Mason."

"Cybil Bennett. I'm a police officer from Brahams, the neighboring town over the mountain." She stood up and grabbed her jacket, started to put it back on. "Look. The phones here are all dead, and my radio too. I'm going to head back to Brahams, call in some reinforcements. Whatever is going on here is beyond my capabilities. You'd best stick around here until I get back."

"Now way," said Harry, jumping up off the stool. "I have to find my daughter. She's out there somewhere, alone. And she doesn't even have a jacket. Have you noticed the snow? It's freezing out there."

"No Harry," said Cybil, putting one leather glove against his chest. "It's dangerous out there, trust me. I don't think anyone should be wondering alone. I'm sure your daughter will be fine, but i'd feel better if you'd wait until I get back."

Harry flashed her a look of anger, and moved away from the young cop. "If it's dangerous out there then I have to find her now! Cheryl is my little girl, I can't just leave her out there by herself!"

Cybil sighed in defeat. She nodded at him reluctantly. "Well, you'd best stick around this area. I wont be gone long. I hope you find your daughter Harry, I really do."

"Thanks." Harry started for the glass restaurant door, side stepping passed a table with a partially eaten meal on it. Whatever happened to the people in this town, it obviously happened very suddenly.

"Wait a second Harry." said Cybil behind him. Harry turned to face her. "Do you have a gun, or anything like that?" He shook his head, and Cybil unbuttoned a holster on her hip, took a small pistol out from it, and put it on the table besides the moldy abandoned meal. "Take this. I have another one. And just hope that you don't have to use it, okay?"

Harry reached over and snatched up the weapon from the table. He had never even held a gun before, and here was this police officer handing him one knowing full well the situation they had been plunged into may force him to use it on something. The dead weight of the steel in his hand made him feel more than a little uncomfortable. He read on the side of it that it was a Berretta M-90, standard police issue firearm.

"Hold's 15 rounds in a clip." Said Cybil as if she had read his questioning thoughts. "Just remember, before you pull the trigger, know your target. Don't shoot unless you really have to, the clip is full but there's no more than the 15 in there. And don't go blasting me by mistake. This is very much against regulation Harry but i think the situation calls for drastic actions. I'll collect it from you when I get back."

"Thanks Cybil." Harry replied to her, thankful for the quick drill. He held the gun up and aimed out the window, starting to feel a little better about the weapon. Small demonic child-like creatures with daggers had better think twice before messing with him now!

"Take care Harry. I'll see you in a few hours or so." And with that, Cybil opened the restaurant door and closed it behind her, the chime of bells reminding Harry that he was once again alone in this creepy nightmare. At least he was armed now. He heard the roar of an engine starting outside, and then her bike was gone into the distance, the fog swallowing the noise.

Harry was about to follow behind her when something caught his eye wear Cybil had been sitting. As he draw nearer he realised it was her radio. Black and sleek with a large antennae and big red button on the side. he picked it up and pushed the button but as he suspected it didn't work. He didn't even get static out of it. Well no matter, she would be able to pick it up when she got back, he thought. Harry turned his back to the radio and started for the door.

Buzzzzzzt! The radio suddenly burst to life with a quick crackle of static, startling Harry. He hopped back over to where it lay and picked it up again, frowing. It was silent again. "Mm.." he mused to himself. "What's going on with this radio?" No sooner had he said anything the radio burst to life again with another crackle of static. He tried to use it, maybe to talk to someone or hear any incoming transmission, but all he could get was static.

CRASH! The far window at the other side of the restaurant burst inward like something big that been thrown into it. Harry stood deadly still as the glass settled to the tiled floor. Silence again. Nothing outside, nothing came in but small flakes of snowy melting on the window ledge. The radio crackled and spewed out static white noise from the floor, he hadn't even realised he'd dropped it.

CRASH! This time it was the window right beside him! Harry caught a glimpse of something pink and big as he dived to the floor covering his head. The glass splashed over his hands and jacket and he jumped to his feet, wildly searching for the cause of the disturbance. And there it was, perched onto of a chair besides the window that had just smashed was a monstrous bird, bigger than he was! Harry stared at it in disbelief. It looked like it's skin had been burnt off, globs of sticky goo slowly peeled off it's gleaming exposed flesh. It squarked at him and stretched it's impossible wings out as Harry backed away from the abomination. He saw the wings were made of leathery skin stretched over the bones of it's arm, connected to it's waist. It opened it's huge bony beak and let another sharp squark rip, showing Harry that it's beak did indeed have alot of sharp teeth enclosed as he feared.

Suddenly it was flapping, squarking and coming right for him. Harry was in a state of shock, he had never seen anything like this, this monster before and had no idea how to react. Then he realised it was no more than a foot away from him and he jumped back to avoid it's lunging claws. To late, one of the creatures massive black talons sliced across the back of his hand as he raised it to defend his face. Blood immediately started dripping from the gaping wound and Harry realised the bird meant to have him for lunch. He didn't think, he raised the handgun, and fired.

The shot missed entirely, smashing into a picture frame at the far side of the diner. He recoil suprised him and it took him to long to aim another shot, the monster was flapping it's hideous wings right above him, preparing to strike at his eyes. It squarked again and Harry closed his eyes in disbelief from the horrible mutation, ready to feel the sting of his eyes being gouged out by it, and fired the handgun. He heard the shot rip through flesh and fired again. The creature fell to the floor beside him crashing through a table and flapped around in pain like a fish bouncing on the deck of a ship. Without thinking Harry raised his boot and brought it down over it's head. It crunched and yellowish fluids splashed across his boot and over the floor, merging with the red puddles blood from his hand wound. The creature stopped moving, dead.

Harry threw up all over it.

Lucid Element:

Silent Hill 1 came out in 1998 for the PS1 and it follows Harry Mason, which is the story i am currently turning into a novel. The story is of course Konamis, whereas I am adding more plot details, extra events and re-scripting the dialogue.

The only Silent Hill to follow a girl was Silent Hill 3, which follows Heather Maison and is a direct sequel to SH1.

SH4 has been out for about a month now and i've played it fully and gotten bored with it. original.gif You can find in the 'Hobbies and Interests' section of this board a forum 97 pages long for talk about the Silent Hill games. thumbsup.gif

Thanks DD!!

More is on it's way. I kinda rushed the second Chapter i have to say, so i'm going to go over and edit it a few more times until it's perfect before moving on to chapter 3.

Side Note, the game follows Harry 100% but at certain times i'm going to branch off and follow Cybil, Dahlia, Kaufmann etc to get their points of view and better understand their characters. original.gif

Good thinking.

I was thinking of that too. The save points are actually referenced in SH3. In the Amusement Park in SH1 Harry uses the save point. The way he uses the save points is he writes down on them like a diary. In SH3 in the Park heather finds one of those notepad savepoints and reads Harrys notes on them.

I could make use of them at least once or twice, if only incase i decide to make a sequel etc.
