Waspie_Dwarf Posted February 25, 2013 #1 Share Posted February 25, 2013 PSLV-C20 launches seven satellites, Pranab witnesses event CHENNAI: India's polar satellite launch vehicle continued with its success streak on Monday, launching Indo-French satellite Saral and six other satellites from Austria, Britain, Canada and Denmark. The 23rd launch of PSLV-C20 — the 22nd consecutive success — also marked the second highest number of satellites being flown in a launch vehicle by the Indian Space Research Organization (Isro). The launch was delayed by five minutes because of a possible interference of space debris.President Pranab Mukherjee and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy were among those who witnessed the launch at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, 100km north of Chennai. The 44.4m PSLV carrying a payload weighing 668.5kg lifted off from the launch pad at 6.01pm, five minutes later than the scheduled time of 5.56pm. Read more... Waspie_Dwarf Posted February 25, 2013 Author #2 Share Posted February 25, 2013 Smartphone fired into space to see if screams can be heard A smartphone has been blasted into orbit from India by a team of researchers from the University of Surrey.They hope to use a purpose-built app to test the theory, immortalised in the film Alien, that "in space no-one can hear you scream". The phone will play out several of the screams submitted by people online. The test will monitor the durability of standard commercial components in space. Austria is launching two satellites at 14kg each called 'NLS 8.1' and 'NLS 8.2'. Denmark is also launching 'NLS 8.3' weighing 3kg.
