keithisco Posted March 4, 2013 #1 Share Posted March 4, 2013 "Germany says it will not allow Bulgaria or Romania to join the EU's passport-free Schengen zone if the issue is put to a vote in the EU on Thursday." "If Romania and Bulgaria insist on a vote, the attempt will fail because of a German veto," German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said. Both countries must take further steps to prevent migrants abusing the system, he told Germany's Spiegel news website. The two countries have sought Schengen entry since joining the EU in 2007. It appears that the question of Romanian and Bulgarians poised at their borders to become Social Security Migrants is a concern outside of the UK... Ashotep Posted March 4, 2013 #2 Share Posted March 4, 2013 Open borders only work if all countries involved are on a level playing field. I would say if the people haven't worked there for at least 10 years legally they shouldn't be eligible for any benefits.
Render Posted March 5, 2013 #3 Share Posted March 5, 2013 (edited) "That's the reason why we want to send people back, and this is what we have to regulate in our European law... There is no problem when people are coming to Germany for work, that's what we want in Europe, but we don't want people coming only to have social security," he told the BBC's Stephen Evans. The Netherlands has previously voted to delay the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen, arguing that both countries need to step up measures against corruption and organised crime. stevewinn Posted March 8, 2013 #4 Share Posted March 8, 2013 open borders from is conception was always going to be a disaster. the thought was in a 'common market' you needed open borders. well, it takes time for the majority to catch on, but there always comes the point when people say enough is enough, and calls to question the hell is actually going on. its a shame it takes so long but once the influence is felt in all four corners of the country public opinion changes. we should really push for a EU referendum in this year and avoid the mess created later. now is the perfect time. keithisco Posted March 8, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted March 8, 2013 If Schengen was restricted to only those countries with similar Cultural and Historic values then it would have worked just fine. IMO
