Would you visit North Korea?

Queen in the North

Recommended Posts

I was going to post this in Other World News, as it is current affairs, but it's not news so posting here.

Question as per title: would you visit North Korea, i.e. for a holiday?

I recently received an email from a well known coupon company advertising a discounted 6 night all inclusive escorted tour of North Korea. I also read some pages on this website, where they outline their views on the morality of visiting such a place.*

Personally I don't think I'd like to spend any money essentially supporting the regime there, but I'd like to find out others' opinions on this. I have to admit I was quite suprised to find an email in my inbox suggesting I go to North Korea!

*too long; didn't read: Westerners visiting will show the ordinary people that Westerners aren't the 'evil characters' they have been portrayed to be by propaganda. My problem with this is how many truly 'ordinary' people are they going to be allowed to come across on a rigid, closely escorted tour?

I have no desire to visit that oppressive, opium smoking/trafficking regime.

You couldn't pay me to go to north korea

See that was my first thought, let alone give them £600 to do it.

But there must be the market for it, otherwise they wouldn't bother, would they?

I'd go there... if it was a decent-priced trip and if I had a habit of going to a holiday to the outside world, and if there was some assurance that they wouldn't keep me there for whatever reasons. The vacation would probably suck, but if you think of being able to visit the place like that, sure. It'd be a shame if it was only a "tourist" tour though, not seeing the actual local life (which I know should be like seeing a concentration camp). I wouldn't want to see it because of being able to pity them more nor for any sadistic pleasures (dont swing that way much, more in the M than S side here) but it'd be good source of insight to what creates and maintains such a status quo. Why millions of people abide to it.

Looking up the travel company offering these trips, they also offer trips to Chernobyl. Wouldn't wanna go there either, myself.

sure theres a market for it im sure theres a fair number of curious people out there who want to visit to see what its like, unfortunately they will only be seeing state monitered areas and lots of smoke and mirrors.

i've read from a few people who have visited that along with being constantly monitered everything seemed entirely staged while they were there like its a few hours of show before youre rushed back to your hotel.

I can kind of see the attraction in that place, and I don't see there being anything morally dubious about going as long as the proper respect is shown (as I'm sure you would!). Just not for me, that one.

As for NK though, even if you got to see citizens of Pyongyang going about their business (whatever that is), from everything I've read about NK the only people living in the city are privileged anyway, so it wouldn't exactly be a look in to the life of the average North Korean. So I can't really see the point in paying to be shown exactly what they want you to see.

I did find the pictures of the DMZ from the website I linked to in my OP interesting, though. I did not know that in places the border was nothing more than a curb!

Why go to NK when you might not even come out?

If you're in south Korea ,you can do a day trip to the border ,and look at the heavily armed guards thru the windows .

It is actually a touristy thing to do in SK.

That is close enough for me .

Oh, for sure, it'd be fascinating. Just as long as I could get there on Air Koryo.

In 2012, Air Koryo resumed services to Kuala Lumpur along with its expansion into Harbin, China. [11] [12] In the 2012, the carrier also launched its new travel package via the Koryo Tours agency, "aviation enthusiast" tours which offered the chance to fly on every variety of Air Koryo aircraft within North Korea on board the Il-76, Mil-17, An-24, Tu-134 and Tu-154. The international services were operated by inbound and out bound Tu-204 or Il-62.

Maybe to see the world's ugliest hotel. I would be scared to stay overnight since it's been a pigeon coop all of these years.

I probably wouldn't go anyway because it would be very depressing to me. No one should have such an oppressive government.

I totally agree.

Who wants an uranium rod up your butt as a souvenir.

And that's if your very lucky what with all those pesky isotopes.

If your really, really unfortunate you might turn into a mutant right before your spouse's eyes.

So in comparison North Korea looks like a stroll in the park despite their nuclear capabilities.

What's next? A package holiday to Venus?

In a heart beat, I'd even to try to work with the Kim as an advisor and try to get him to change his ways and work him from the inside out.

Horribly idealistic considering I can't even speak the language, or have the social status to even get close enough. Even worse foresight since if I became famous I'd be linked to this name and he'd see it then do some horrible execution to show what he does to spies.

You know what I think, I'll avoid NK for the time being. :P

I'd never pass up an opportunity to vist any place. Would I go out of my way to pay for and go there on purpose? Hmmm, probably not, there are other places I'd like to see first. However, if a business trip arose, or a friend wanted a travel partner, or something specific like that came up... yes, I would go. I would want to see it with my own eyes even knowing that what I was being shown wasn't necessarily the "truth".
