WASHINGTON — Despite its long odds in the full Senate, a federal ban on assault weapons cleared a Democratic-run committee Thursday on a party-line vote.

"I've looked at bodies that have been shot with these weapons," the bill's chief sponsor, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, told Senate Judiciary Committee colleagues. "How many times does this have to happen?"

I doubt this bill will pass the House, as they don't have the required votes to get it to pass even among the Democrats.

I doubt they will get an "Assualt" (It's big and scary looking!) Weapons Ban. I wouldn't mind tougher laws on gun trafficking and obtaining a weapon illegally. But, I'm against more gun regristration. The laws on gun registration that we have on the books are good enough, and alot tougher then what most people think. Even if it DOES pass (which I doubt) it will not be enforcable.

Newtown families: Senators who filibuster gun background check bill should be ‘ashamed’

Dozens of relatives of victims in the Dec. 14 shooting spree in Newtown, Conn., released a statement Thursday shaming senators who attempted to block, or filibuster, a vote on legislation that would expand criminal background checks for gun purchases.

Senators voted Thursday morning on whether to block the legislation crafted by West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin and Pennsylvania Republican Pat Toomey from coming to a vote. While 31 senators, including two Democrats, did vote to block the bill, a bipartisan group of 68 senators from both parties voted to allow a debate and vote on the bill to proceed.

"The Senators who have vowed to filibuster this bill should be ashamed of their attempt to silence efforts to prevent the next American tragedy," reads the statement, signed by more than 33 relatives of the 20 children and 6 educators killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. "We thank Senators Manchin and Toomey for coming together to honor the memory of the victims of Sandy Hook, and we urge their colleagues in Congress to join them."

Republican Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Mike Lee of Utah are among those who voted against debating the bill on Thursday. Cruz defended the tactic to radio host Laura Ingraham on Wednesday, saying there should be a 60-vote threshold before a debate on curbing gun rights. Democrats hold 55 seats in the Senate, but 60 senators must vote before a bill can be debated. According to the Dallas Morning News, Cruz spoke by phone with Erica Lafferty, Hochsprung's daughter, this week, to hear her concerns.

“He certainly feels for her loss,” Cruz's spokeswoman told the paper. “But the legislation being considered right now wouldn’t have prevented that tragedy.”

The National Rifle Association has also said that tighter background checks would not have prevented Newtown shooter Adam Lanza from accessing weapons, since they were reportedly purchased by his mother, who had no criminal record.

In a surprising turnaround, New York State Police have admitted that they made a mistake when they confiscated the guns and suspended the permit of an Erie County resident on the grounds of mental health.

Senator Says Universal Background Checks Could Lead to National Registry

Nothing short of a rejection of any gun bill should be acceptable to the American people if they wish to retain a modicum of liberty

Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, expressed his concern on the Senate floor about a universal firearm background check system now under consideration in Congress.

“Some of the proposals, like for example – universal background checks – would allow the federal government to surveil law-abiding citizens who exercise their Constitutional rights,” Lee said. “One of the provisions we expect to see in the bill based on what we saw in the Judiciary Committee – on which I sit – would allow the Attorney General of the United States (Eric Holder) to promulgate regulations that could lead to a national registry system for guns. Something my constituents in Utah are very concerned about, and understandably so.”

Senator Lee said the government has no authority to monitor the legal exercise of constitutional rights.

That's how it is in my state now (as it is in many states). Still doesn't stop the criminals from getting guns (cuz, you know, criminals really do walk into a gun store and actually pay full price plus sales tax - if applicable ).
