Game of Thrones

I figure I may appear square here if not positively trapezoid, and I accept the realities of history have to be understood and accepted. The latter however can be achieved in history textbooks without the graphic intensity.

I feel the appeal here is to sadistic impulses and of course ordinary pornographic impulses. I have never had anything against pornography as long as they are adults and there is no portrayal of sadism or rape or other similar anti-social impulses. I have always had a thing against graphic violence. This is pure cheap commercial use of people's less fortunate instincts and is degrading. One can have a ripping murder mystery without the actual murder scene, one can have a truly frightening horror show without blood and gore, using suspense.

Possibly you should read the books Frank but I understand the issue. GRRM is an exceptional author that treats the subject with enough fiction to separate us from reality.

I thought tonight's episode was amazing. I'm trying to prepare emotionally for what is *potentially going to happen to Tyrion now....

I hate Cersi even more. I didn't think that was possible.

And kudos to Sansa....she's smarter than everyone has given her credit for.

Thanks for all the spoilers, pilgrims. :(

(I know, it's my own fault for reading the thread)

Well I don't think it's historical reality at all or the species would long since have vanished. The reality is that through most of history people have been born, lived, and died with very little happening to them. We get a different impression of history because the narratives concentrate all the exciting parts together.

You know for all the violence and politics, you discover some redeeming qualities in some of the characters that speak to real heroism and true integrity. There is much to love and much to hate, there are the good and the bad in people, in all it's barbarity and it's splendour. It's not just about the violence, I would not watch a show of gratuitous violence, those scenes bring forth deep emotions about justice and the nature of humanity, watching some of characters grow into heroic forces to be reckoned with in this environment can be very inspiring and the matter of honour and duty are treated well too.

Not Kings and Queens or the nobility though, there is plenty of violent ends of generation upon generation of these to be had in history. Heck, let's just look at King Henry the 8th and Queen Elizabeth the 1st for starters, but each generation had it's wars and heads on pikes for many many centuries.

Sansa 2.0 is going to be great fun to watch.

A little bird told me today that Sansa 2.0 never happens in the book or that she at least never revealed her identity.

I see they kept to the books for the trial by combat o.O

Wonder if the aftermath is going to play out like in the books as well?

The show has diverged drastically from the books. Sansa and LF keep her secret, as far as I remember, but I really enjoyed the different take on it in the show. Sansa 2.0 definitely happens but not quite as fast as on the HBO show. Honestly, I am very happy to enjoy two versions of the story, which is what we have going, as I enjoy them both in completely different ways. I so look forward to Sunday as it is one of the best shows on TV, even if it has diverged from the novels. I can't wait to read the next book and the books will always be number one in my head but the show is wonderful and incredibly well produced and presented by incredible actors.

Well its been suggested before, so i might as well do it.

I am starting a thread for the book readers, so we can dispense with the spoiler tags all the time.

PS: For the people who doesn't like TV violence - don't watch "The mountain and the viper", because that was just nasty

Vietnam is pretty tight about violence on TV, but I speak English so can watch the stuff on satellite. To my mind one of the problems of speaking English.

The look on the hounds face and Arya laughing when they heard the news at the bloody gate was classic!

No doubt Masie Williams (Arya) is one to watch for the future.

I think that one of the reasons the show is so succesful, is that they have done a great job of casting the characters.

For example, I would never have thought about Nicolai Coster Waldau as Jaime, even though i have seen him in many Danish movies. But he has done great.

And yes, in case you wondered, every Danish man looks like him

They have done a superb casting job. Diana Riggs as Olenna Tyrell was one of my favorites

i really love this season....!!!! :)

I think it is the best season to date.

Did everyone like Sansa's black hair?

And I haven't read the books, I'm torn if I want to, or to just wait for the show to finish, then read....

I think it looked great but they have to dye it to cover up that Tully head of red hair. To the world, outside of teh three lords, she is LF's "ward".

Caitlyn Stark is now starting as the lead protagonist in the new season of 24, which is phenomenal btw. Evil terrorist wench, Arabic accent and all. Just adding this to say that she too is a great actor. Sometimes you don't notice how good an actor is until you see them in different roles.

I posted the below in the spoiler thread Noteverythingisaconspiracy started :tu:

"(Michelle Fairley) is playing a psychopath, terrorist (Margot Al-Hazari) on the new 24 series"

Had a bunch of spoilers attached though so...... 24 is an awesome show and I am p***ed I missed the original. When this season is over the wife and I will watch the originals as they must be available somewhere. Seat of your pants the whole time.

What!!!! You never watched 24 before?! Merc, I'm appalled! Ok, settling down. Glad you're watching now. Keep a short memory though as this season is full of spoilers since they talk of the past all the time. Don't worry. You'll still be gripped and have plenty of surprises when you start the old seasons. Just so you know, as an avid and rabid fan of the original I can say with confidence that this current season is every bit as well written and exciting as the show ever was before. You'll love it. I started a 24 thread last year when I first heard about this new season. It seems no one here cares too much but I'd love to see some chat about it and I'll post it below. Perhaps this shortened season is a tad bit more fast paced, not that the other seasons were slow at all. They carry all the seasons on Netflix FYI.

I know, I am kicking myself in the ass now. My wife and son are leaving for 5.5 weeks in Turkey (her home) this summer so i see a massive marathon viewing session coming!! I'll post when I start.
