1st Sled dog death in 1000 mile race

A sled dog was left at an Inuit community (the kiss of death) during the annual 1000 mile Iditarod race in Alaska. The dog asphyxiated in a snow drift (probably tied up as usual).

Anyways, congratulations in advance to the winner, hope he/she enjoys the new pickup truck and $50,000 prize money. (sarcasm)

NEVER a fan! Hate the credit to the human. Watched a show where a bunch of young non-Alaskans had their dogs getting used to the frigid cold, some looked like beagle/hounddog mixes. They had no thick coat!

Disgusting.

If they are going to do this those dogs well being should come before their own. Maybe put the dog owners out in front pulling the sled.

Actually there is a difference. Many people, including the government and agri-business insist that humans need to consume animal flesh to survive. That's not true of course, but it's successful economic myth. Sled dog races of 1000 miles are completely unnecessary. If you inflict unnecessary violence or death to dog, it is by definition animal cruelty. Obviously "farm animals" are legally exempt from the animal cruelty clause (section 446 of the Criminal Code of Canada).

Are you condemning the Race or Dog sledding as a whole?

The 1000 mile race. If humans want to run a 1000 mile race in Alaska, in the winter, more power to you.

If you need sled dogs in the Arctic, because you live in a hunter/gatherer society, than that's ethically defensible.

If you're an outfitter in B.C., who orders an employee to shoot 50 dogs after the Winter Olympics because they're no longer needed, I have a problem with that too.
