Dinosaur-killing space rock 'was a comet'

The space rock that hit Earth 65 million years ago and is widely implicated in the end of the dinosaurs was likely a speeding comet.

That is the conclusion of research which suggests the 180km-wide Chicxulub crater in Mexico was carved out by a smaller object than previously thought.

Many scientists consider a large and relatively slow moving asteroid to have been the likely culprit.

Details were outlined at the 44th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

But other researchers were more cautious about the results.

Study suggests a massive comet killed dinosaurs, not an asteroid

The story of dinosaur extinction may be wrong, if a new scientific study of the Chicxulub crater in Mexico proves correct. The study’s authors argue that it wasn’t an asteroid that killed the dinosaurs off, but rather a comet.

I was going to write potato potato, but then I realised they were spelt the same.

Not sure it made that much difference to the dinosaurs

It would be kinda ironic. The Chichilub event has been the main thing motivating the search for potentially dangerous asteroids.

From what we are told, large meteors or comets impact every few million years or so. Galaxies collide, supernovas happen and black holes swallow stars, and maybe solar systems with them.

Just like the continued warming and cooling of this planet over the eons - its going to happen no matter what we do.

Absolutely untrue. There is no physical reason why we can't deflect asteroids into safe orbits. There are many ways this could be achieved in theory and there are many people working on it practically. There are many natural disasters we are clueless about how to avoid, collisions with lumps of space rock are not one of them,

There is proof of a crater in Mexico. Some think it took about 100,000 year for them to all die out.
