Miken79 Posted March 26, 2013 #1 Share Posted March 26, 2013 (edited) Background This may sound like a silly story but it’s something that happened to me when I was twelve years old and to this day I still revisit this event trying to find a logical explanation. I have shared this story with many friends and family but never online before today. My goal is to share my experience in hopes of getting feedback or if anyone else has ever experienced anything similar. Before I dive into the story I want to give a quick background of my life and layout of the house (Where the event took place.) at the time. I’m not trying to make this simple story drag along but I want to give as much detail so everyone can understand my perspective at the time. My mother and father had divorced and my younger sister and I lived with my mother. My mother rented a red brick house that she, my sister and I lived in. It was a single story house with a basement. The house sat on a slop hill. Therefore the front of the basement was not underground but facing the slop of the hill. There was a single garage door in the front that led into the basement. There were also a few window wells with small windows towards the back of the basement that was underground. The garage door and windows were the only entrance to the basement from the outside. There was a single flight of stairs that led up to the main floor. At the top of the stairs was a door that could be locked. Just taking a guess, the house seemed to be built during the 70’s or early 80s. The living room was in the front part of the house by the main entrance door. There was a very large window in that room that faced the main street down the hill. The heating & cooling vents in the house did not come up through the floor, but actually came out of the walls at their base. There were two of these vents under the large window in the living room. Each was placed at the same width of the window which was probably 6 to 8 feet. We had lived at this house for several months without any unexplained incidents. During this time, I was going to a Seventh Day Adventist school. My family and I were not Seventh Day Adventist, my sister and I was just going to their school. Over the past few days our teacher had told us stories about her husband performing exorcisms on individuals. Some of these stories were very scary and of course being twelve at the time, I loved hearing them. Experience On a Friday night, I was at home with my family. My mother and sister were leaving to pick up my grand-mother because she was going to spend the weekend with us. When they left, I was alone in the house sitting in the living room admiring a new die-cast car I had purchased because I collected them at the time. It was less than five minutes after they left that suddenly I started to hear very loud voices come out of the two vents under the front window. When I say voices plural, I mean two distinct voices, each coming out of their own vent. The most ridiculous part of this whole story is what they were saying. They were not saying any words but making what sounded to me, mocking ghost sounds. So basically the sounds coming out of the vents were “Boooo….. Booooo…. Booooo….”. At this point you may be thinking this story is stupid and a waste of your reading, but please read the whole thing. So as these sounds are coming out of the vents, I am sitting there froze, holding my hand over my chest because I am very scared. I was thinking that maybe my mother was playing a prank on me. So I said out loud “Mom, stop it!”. However, the voices did not stop or make any indication I was heard. I decide to walk over to the window and look outside to see if my mom’s car is gone. If it was, than I knew this was not her playing a prank. As I was walking towards the window, the vent closes to me let out a laugh. It is a laugh I will never forget because it sounded demonic. I still walked to the window and looked outside. My mom’s car was not there. At this point I am starting to panic. I had never been so scared in my life because being the mind of a twelve year old; I am thinking demons are coming after me. Standing there not knowing what to do next, the phone rings and I run to the back of the house and answer it. It was my grandma wanting to know if my mom and left yet to pick her up. I explained everything to her about the sounds and she could tell I was very scared. As I am telling her what was going on, I can still hear the voices coming out of the vents in the living room from the front of the house. My grandma was worried and said she was going to get off the phone and call my dad. When I got off the phone the sounds had stopped. I was very relieved but at the same time still very scared. A few minutes later my dad showed up. He must have flew on the roads because he got there very fast after he heard what was going on from my grandma. My dad was not someone who really believed in ghost or the supernatural. He did believe in God and the Devil but was very skeptical towards stories about possessions or exorcisms. When I explained to my dad what was going on, he figured I was exaggerating about the sounds coming out of the vents and that it was probably some cats fighting around the house. I knew better at the time that was not true but I did not argue because I knew there was no way I could prove what I heard; which was frustrating. Shortly after, my mother, sister and grandmother showed up. My mother was more open-minded and she believed every word I told her. She too was also very scared. My dad checked around the house and never found anything unusual and eventually left to go back to his apartment once everyone calmed down. A few minutes after he left, we all heard a loud noise in the basement. It sounded like a huge box of items had fallen over. Again, we were all very scared because we thought someone was in the basement and figured it was the same person who had somehow made these voices in the vents. My mom locked the door leading to the basement and called my dad because at the time he actually had a bag phone in his car. My dad turned around and came back immediately. He had had his gun from the first time he came over, so he went down into the basement to see if anyone was down there. Eventually my mother and I went down there with him. We searched every inch of the basement and never found anyone. We never even found what might have caused the loud crashing noise we had heard earlier. The garage door was locked and every window was shut and locked as well. My dad ended up staying over that night because we were all very nervous and scared. Nothing ever happened again at that house and we eventually moved out several months later. My Thoughts When you are twelve years old you naturally jump to conclusions on things. That night I thought for sure it was demons. However, as the years go by and I got older. I tried to be more logical about things. It could have been someone who played a prank on me. I can’t deny that possibility. However there are a few problems with that theory that I have asked myself many times over the years and just can’t find a reasonable explanation for. How did the voices come in so clear through the vents? I do not recall any echo or distortion. It was as if the source of the voices were coming a few inches right behind the vent. That is what really got my attention that night when I first heard the voices. The laugh I heard that night did not sound like a normal laugh. As I said, it sounded demonic. I will never forget that laugh. It was what changed everything for me that night. However, I cannot say it is impossible for a human to do the same laugh. If this was a prank there is no way someone could have done this from the outside. The home was bricked from the ground up. There was no way someone could have got there voice to travel out of those vents from the outside. If it was a prank, then it had to have been done from the basement. However, I still do not know how it could have been done. All the duct work in the basement was in the drop ceiling. Someone would have had to remove the drop ceiling tiles, cut into the duct working leading to the vents and still create theirs voices without any sign of echo or distortion. Than they would have to put the drop ceiling back together, go out the garage door (which I would have heard) or craw out one of the windows. However, if they did craw out one of the windows, they would have had no way of shutting it because it was the old style crank windows that can only be shut from the inside. Than the final question, who would want to play a prank on me like that? I guess it could have been someone random but it sure would have been a lot of work (Which I can’t explain how the work could have been done.) to just scare a twelve year old boy. I am now 33 years old and I still think about that night very often. I try to be reasonable and find logical explanations for that night. I have a degree in Computer Science, so being logical is an everyday need of my life. However, no matter how hard I try I cannot find any answers. The only possibility is maybe it was supernatural? Maybe it was demons harassing me because I enjoyed the stories my teacher had told me? I don’t know, but to be honest, deep down I feel as if it was something supernatural taunting me and hope I never experience it again. Bw1234 Posted March 26, 2013 #3 Share Posted March 26, 2013 An interesting read. I can't say I believe you 100% because anyone can post anything and that applies to everyone. However, I am open minded about a lot of things and I don't think someone would make up something like this. Quite a scary experience, it would be for most people. Paradoxum Posted March 26, 2013 #4 Share Posted March 26, 2013 Hi Miken, Welcome to UM and thanks for sharing your story. I've had similar experiences when I was young (although not voices) and also struggle to find explanations to them. I hope you find some answers! SpiritWriter Posted March 26, 2013 #5 Share Posted March 26, 2013 (edited) Thanks for sharing your experience.. maybe it was meant for you to experience just so you would know there is more to the universe than is normally understood. You were at the age a lot of people are when they experience these things and you were going through a lot at the time, divorce, new house, scary stories... I feel like there is some aperture of the brain that when certain psychological elements are present, combine and spiritual manifestations are possible or have the possibility of occuring, which in your case did.... very interesting. I for one believe your story and am glad for it, only because it doesn't seem so bad (although at the time it must have been really scary) and it gave you possibilities to think about all these years. Makes life a little more interesting I think, to contemplate the fact that there is more than meets the eye. Edit: I believe spirits play pranks on us too, its fun for them sometimes when the get the opportunity. Even though it was scary and not something I would want to experience again, it did make life a lot more interesting for me. Thanks for your response.
