Talon Posted October 13, 2004 #1 Share Posted October 13, 2004 'Miracle baby' nurses face probe A Nursing and Midwifery Council probe is beginning into the activities of seven women who claim to have confirmed so-called "miracle pregnancies". The UK women, who include midwives and nurses, belong to a church whose leader is wanted for questioning over child trafficking allegations in Kenya. The council said the women could face professional misconduct charges. Self-styled archbishop Gilbert Deya claims infertile women he has prayed over have gone on to give birth. Some of the women were alleged to have given birth four times in a year. But none of the "miracle babies" has DNA matching their "parents". Asylum So far 20 children in Kenya and at least one child in London have been taken into care. Of the seven British women who attested to the miracle pregnancies, despite no ultrasound or blood test ever proving positive, at least three are understood to be registered midwives working in the NHS. The Nursing and Midwifery Council said these women could face professional misconduct charges and be struck off and that details of those who claim to be midwives but are not registered will be passed to police. Mr Deya denies child trafficking and has applied for political asylum in the UK. The investigation was launched after BBC Radio 4's Face The Facts programme revealed the activities of the Gilbert Deya ministries. You and Yours, BBC Radio 4, 1200 BST, Wednesday 13 October.
