Russia sends animals in to space

A variety of live animals have been launched in to space by Russia as part of a new one-month mission.

An intrepid critter crew of geckos, mice and gerbils and other animals launched into orbit Friday (April 19) to begin a month-long Russian experiment to study how space travel affects living creatures. The space mission, scientists assure, will return the animals to Earth alive.

Launch of Bion-M Capsule on Russian Soyuz 2-1A Rocket

A Russian Soyuz 2-1A rocket successfully launched April 19th 2013 at 10:00 UTC from Baikonur carrying the Bion-M unmanned capsule into orbit. The capsule contains numerous experiments including 45 mice, 8 gerbils and 15 newts and snails - all part of a Russian experiment mission. It will return intact to Earth later next month.

I can't even begin to understand how this will benefit.

Let's send rodents into space!

We've been there, but let us send rodents and the like to see if we at least have small pets.

The programs of space should fund actual human-manned discoveries of planet after planet.

There is no escape really. If we all are reduced to nothing by a massive chunk of space, so be it.

I don't really see what we've done so magical to deem us necessary to live in minds forever.

The "aliens" fly around to tease us.. haha I may be kidding, but that's what it seems like now. We are a destructive race.. it was meant to implode, regardless of the beautiful animals, plants, and earth that people don't care to **** upon.

I realize, of course, that this other planet would be an escape from comets and such, but come on. Even with new humans on other planets, their selfishness and greed will get in the way and terrorize the mission.

Space Capsule Returns Cosmic Rodents to Earth after Month-Long Flight

MOSCOW, May 19 (RIA Novosti) – The returnable capsule of a biological research satellite has landed in the Russian Orenburg Region near the border with Kazakhstan, bringing mice, Mongolian gerbils, geckos and various microorganisms and plants back to Earth after their month-long flight, Mission Control said on Sunday.

“The descent vehicle separated from the equipment module of the Bion-M spacecraft at 6:32 a.m. Moscow time [02:32 GMT]. After successfully passing through the dense layers of the Earth’s atmosphere, the capsule landed at 07:12 Moscow time at the designated area, about 100 km [62 miles] northeast of Orenburg,” Mission Control said

Russian Satellite a ‘Success’ Despite Animal Deaths – Official

MOSCOW, May 22 (RIA Novosti) – Russia's Bion-M1 biological research satellite, which recently carried rodents, microorganisms and plants on a month-long space flight, successfully accomplished its mission, an official said on Wednesday, despite the death of most of the animals on board.

“The spacecraft did not show any noticeable failures and has accomplished its program in full,” said Vladimir Sychev, deputy director of Russia’s Institute of Medical and Biological Studies.
