How much do you know about benefits?

Here is a quiz which should be a real eye-opener to those on here who seem to think that people on benefits (JSA, ESA, etc) are a massive drain on the UK's economy. A couple of the answers which should be most surprising are:

  • 42% of the government's total benefit expenditure goes to the elderly
  • only 5 families in the UK get more than £100,000 in benefits (don't tell the Daily Mail!)
  • asylum seekers are not entitled to benefits (again, don't tell the Daily Mail!)
  • only 0.8% of entire benefit spending goes on false claims
  • only 2.5% of total government expenditure goes on people who are unemployed (a truly MASSIVE drain on the economy, I'm sure you'll all agree)
  • the share of national income spent on social security reached an all-time high in 1993/94 - which was actually a Tory government. So all the nonsense about our alleged benefit state brought in by labour is nothing more than lies

So please, the next time you read a story written by an elitist news outlet - a story designed to paint the poor of this country as the real drain on the UK economy, a story forced upon us as a means to deflect attention away from the real drainage crew - remember, the story you are reading was written by and for a multi-million pound corporation with their own agendas.

It is despicable just how easily these news outlets have been able to paint a tiny minority of people as the evil money drainers of our economy when the facts do not support the theory in the slightest. It is a testament to just how stupid the masses of this tiny island really are. And it is George Orwell 101.

Thanks

Excellent post. :tu:

It's the members of parliament/the government who are a drain on our economy. They are overpaid, tax dodging and benefit scrounging gits. They want everyone to hate those on benefits so that their attention is drawn away from their shenanigans.....

Or put another way, this is what the government do with the 25% of your earned income that is taken off you every year :-

And that doesn't include all the additional taxes, vat, car tax etc which means you probably hand back nearer 50% of your earned income back to the government.

Aye but 42% of that 'welfare' is spent on pensioners, and most of the rest is spent on child benefit. Also, 64% of all UK families receive some kind of benefit. Which means a large chunk of the 'welfare' of that pie chart actually goes back to the people who have put the money in.

To lump it all together as one is to skew the realities of what welfare is and where it actually goes. Looking at that pie chart the majority of people will think of the welfare chunk as scroungers lying about doing nothing, which is an absolutely huge distortion of reality.

Also, do you have a source for the chart?

Except of course that "only 0.8% of entire benefit spending goes on false claims" is simply an extrapolation of the figures from the people that have been caught & prosecuted. They are like all government figures, you don't for instance believe that everybody who has committed a crime is in prison do you?

At best they are guesswork made from the verifiable evidence. What about the ones that don't get caught? or the ones that 'do a runner' before going to court? or simply the ones that are off the radar. or indeed :- Almost 50,000 children living abroad are receiving benefits claimed by immigrant families based in Britain, figures have revealed. link :- http://metro.co.uk/2...enefit-3372471/

Simply because the official figures quote a small percentage doesn't mean it's a small sum, even a small percentage of a vast amount of money is a lot of money.

I think pretty much everybody could identify someone who is fiddling the system. example:- how many times have you seen somebody pull up in a supermarket car park with a disabled badge & park in a disabled space skip out of the vehicle patently not disabled?

p.s.

"only 2.5% of total government expenditure goes on people who are unemployed" ... Total government expenditure = £715,000,000,000 2.5% of that = £17,875,000,000. just shy of 18billion pounds a year.

I would be inclined to agree with your opinion on benefit cheats if it were not for ATOS. ATOS has completely changed who can claim benefits and I would imagine that this number has come from their work over the past couple of years of their policy consisting of incredibly unreasonable criteria. And around half (I think) of those whom ATOS has designated ineligible to receive benefits have won their tribunal cases against their ruling. This being said, of course there will still be those who slip through the cracks, though the number will be nowhere near that portrayed by the media.

Also, 50,000, while not insignificant, is a tiny, tiny number when compared to the actual total. What I mean by this is that if we take away the 50,000, the actual percentage probably won't even be changed by 1%.

There is also the NHS, we know that has been creamed to the max.

I am from an inner London area and the schools are mainly children from immigrant parents in many boroughs, not a problem with that, but the problem lies with the numbers, it is rare to see an immigrant family with only 1 child, these children cost the state and many of the parents have not or have not been here long enough to cover the fees of what it costs to educate all of their children.

The stats are based on the whole of England, brake it down to areas and you really will see a marked difference.

Many may not be on job seekers allowance, but where is the true figure of those claiming income related benefits who receive benefits towards their rent and council tax, NHS fees and living allowances?

Talking from experience from a particular London borough, my council tax was high and went up each year, opposite me was an old peoples home which had been * turned into flats for asylum seekers (who as quite rightly pointed out, can not claim benefits) and problem families who were not working , who paid for them??? It is not free to house and supply electricity, water and gas to these flats, maintenance and rubbish clearance also has to be paid for.

I do highly agree with this:

It's the members of parliament/the government who are a drain on our economy......but 2 wrongs do not make a right, it just makes it even more infuriating for tax payers who struggle because their wage packet has gone before they can see - cleared funds!

* there was severe opposition to this as it meant the elderly were losing their care home, the council did not care what the community thought or wanted and the plan went ahead, it cost a lot of tax payers money to redesign all the flats and considering the people who were moved in were not paying rent or council tax, then this was all covered by the tax payer,,,,,are these kind of "projects' included in the stat chart?
