Well know most people here won't be happy with this (since Obama didn't declare all drone technology illegal and arrest himself :P) but at least it's a step in the right direction. Hopefully more work will be done on just how drones are used and putting more defined guidelines on their use. Also hope Gitmo can cleared out a bit and efforts can be made to phase it out.

Keep them off North American soil, keep them strictly in warfare situations. If crime really is declining over here, how are you going to justify more security, more police and the use of military technology? Isn't the end result supposedly....less crime?

I think they like spying on the American people so they will find a way to justify it.

You're mixing legitimate issues (Benghazi,IRS) with inane issues (Kenya,Socialist). The question is: Did you do it unintentionally, or with the intent to try to make the real issues seem inane by associating them with the inane issues?

Oh of course. None of use were born yesterday - we've all seen these scenarios play out time and time again. It's not if they will find a way to justify it, its when

In time it's all relative.

Drones have many practical uses in terms of combat, but if they're used by widespread law enforcement in the US I'll have to protest.

I hate technology. Of all kinds. Especially things that can be used to spy on people.

Of course the NSA pays attention to every damn thing, but drones are a different story because they can blow you up.

Personally I think it depends on the type of drone being used, who is using it, and how it is being used. I don't think we need predator or reaper drones flying around the US but I can see where drones like the quad rotors can be extremely helpful to police.

I just don't think that this is a black and white issue of either drones or no drones, I think it is far more complicated that that.

Drones are here to stay including domestic uses. Being against them is being against the future. Our energy should be focused on advocating and insuring their ethical use.

They have already been approved in many places in different applications. At one time people were against the locomotive and cars and roads and cameras on the corner.

One cannot remotely kill another human being and pass it off as a "gas explosions" with a locomotive.

That is why I said we don't need the drones like predators or reapers armed with hellfire missiles, but quad rotors are completely different. Picture a large event, like a parade or rally, the police can not be everywhere and view everything at once but if you put a few quad rotors up in the air with cameras then they can view a much larger area with fewer people watching so more police officers can be placed in strategic locations for quick response in any area to any problem.

First not all drones are armed with weapons and even the ones that are could be of some use to police forces like SWAT teams. I doubt the drones like the predator or reaper will be of any real use flying over America but some smaller drones armed with varies weapons such as guns could help SWAT. It is not hard to picture a situation where there are armed criminals held up in a building, potentially with hostages, and instead of sending SWAT personal in sending in armed drones instead that could arguably take out the criminals in a far more quiet and safe manner then the SWAT teams could in person.

As LBA said drones are here to stay and will not be going away and the discussion should be on how they will be used and who gets to use them and not on if they will be used or not.

Pure lip service and theatrics by the Prez. At least Medea Benjamin had the courage and conscience to speak out in front of him. Too bad nobody in the room had an old tennis shoe to throw at the corrupt b******.

Great, another one of his "I'm really gonna do it this time, no really, I'm gonna do it now, no seriously, right now I'm going to do something" speeches.

Makes that Noble Prize even more laughable now, doesn't it?

Well the larger drones do have their uses, unarmed of course, for police. From what I understand they're used in the larger states to ensure that cattle farmers aren't polluting rivers.

Increased oversight is important, but not easy, Obama said. (Take a look how long they take to pass a budget or do anything bipartison! ) While Obama has considered a special court or independent oversight board involving the legal branch of the government, he plans to talk with Congress to determine how best to handle the deployment of drones. (that's what's in place for him to use now, I don't think he was saying there would be no oversight board eventually)

It's a difficult subject, once a government has technology of any type it is not going to give it up! The best anyone can do is how to best use it or not use it. It's really the same situation as nuclear technology or even guns. It depends on who's using it and why.
