..and in spreading peace, you and them must have found that judging anyone by how they look or what flag they fly is uncalled for just as much as judging someone by their beliefs is isn't it?

Yes we did, I never said we didn't.

More news regarding the tea party:

York Mosque Counters EDL Protest With Tea, Biscuits And Football

Was Choudry hiding in the York mosque? Why protest there then if your theory is true?

Yet again you miss the point completely. (or should that be.. choose to ignore the point.)

Getting back on topic & the aticle in question, one possible overlooked explanation of why things were conducted in civil manner is that in reality the EDL are only protesting against a certain type of muslim, i.e. the type of muslim that sparked this whole episode off by beheading a british citizen. Everytime the EDL plan a march to protest about extreme fundamentalist muslims ( Anjem Choudary & his ilk) fundamentalist muslims & their extreme left wing pals use it as an excuse to cause mayhem & have a pop at a few coppers in the bargin. If you accept that this was an EDL protest & that when confronted in a civil manner they reacted likewise perhaps it would be a pertinent lesson for future reference.

If they are only protesting against a certain element of the religion, then they need to be more clear about what their intent is...since they have made statements about the religion in general, which puts them into the extremist element for me.

Well this has become a predictable farce.

Leave Britney Alone: If you want to continue your ill-informed argument that anyone flying the St George Cross is a racist thug, get back to the thread about that.

Ealdwita: If you want to continue your equally ill-informed argument that all Muslims are evil, go and find another thread that deals with that.

Coffey: If you want to talk about your conspiracy theories, go and find one of the many threads on that topic.

Likewise for everyone else.

I've made it very clear what the purpose of this thread is. If you can't respect that, I will ask for it to be locked.

Faith in humanity restored by this mosque and these EDL supporters.

Faith in humanity then destroyed by posters on UM. This is becoming an all too familiar cycle.

Ok i'm as guilty as others in getting side tracked on this thread.

The thread is about the EDL and the mosque finding some common ground.

Lets stick with the topic in future.

I did not bring up that issue here. Please, if you can, pretty please, do not single me out. But if you must then OK. No worries.

Because they also use it as their symbol. That is what they chose. Why ignore the concept of appropriation? Most people recognize it as their symbol. That is why they asked him to take it down.

By that argument, Islam is offensive because it's what scum like the Woolwich murderers choose to hide behind/represent themselves with.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is also bringing together all sides.

Love the way our societies are getting along!!! Long time coming.

If you like this then you are in for a real treat in the coming years. Ecumenism is going to be all the rage soon. About the only group that will be unacceptable will be "old fashioned" Christians who actually believe the Bible - "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me" Those words will actually be considered hateful.

Odas!! brutha! I don't have a clue... but I promise you - you'll know it when you see it :w00t:

BTW - that last statement of mine is already true in some places. Christianity is a hateful, intolerant religion, you know? It's almost funny. Not too many Christians practicing demolition with explosives lately.

Would love to comment mate but already been singled out for derailing (even if was only responding to what someone else introduced) and no need for that again especially after a mod has already requested not to continue.

Haven't read the rest of this thread so apologies if i repeat anything but it should be pointed out that most arrests made at EDL demos have been so-called anti-fascist protestors....

my point being that usually you have a mob of pseudo-communists and anarchists to deal with before any meaningful dialogue with muslims can be reached..

but i applaud both the local mosque and the EDL in this instance...these islamist idiots need to be totally marginalised...and to be honest i'm both surprised and also happy with the reaction of the mainstream muslim groups in the UK to the events of last week....hopefully they are finally waking up.

This is by far one of the best methods to deploy against a protest!

After all, it's a tad difficult to stand outside saying loudly:

"Gosh, we don't like you and what we mistakenly think you represent!"

while from inside a voice is heard shouting back:

"Er... would you like a cuppa? Oh look, we have choccy digestives to go with them!"

I think the problem is young folk filled with liberal ideas and energy drinks tend to just be itching for a confrontation. They seem to have an unnecessary revolutionary fervor. That's fine when things are at their darkest and revolution is the only option, but we're in a relatively polite and society. Nobody helps their cause with violence. If you really want to change hearts and minds then take a page out of Gandhi's book - Sit down and protest non-violently.

Reminds me of the saying "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."

True that.

I heard an interview on the radio with one of the mosque leaders. He wouldn't say if anyone won the pick up football match. :)

These sort of 'protests' should take place more often!

Edit: Oh, forgot to add that when the mosque leader was asked if he'd go to the EDL headquarters for tea and biscuits, he said; "Of course! How can I ask them to trust me if I can't trust them?"
