Still Waters Posted May 30, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 30, 2013 (edited) THINK iron jewellery is down-to-earth? Not for the ancient Egyptians, it wasn't. A 5300-year-old necklace bead found in an Egyptian tomb was made with iron from a meteorite. Evidence for iron smelting in Egypt dates back to the 6th century BC, but archaeologists have found much older iron artefacts in the region, including in Tutankhamun's tomb. Such artefacts are "pretty much exclusive to high-status tombs", says Diane Johnson of the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK. Previous analyses of the oldest of these – nine iron beads from a cemetery near the Nile – proved inconclusive on their origins. http://www.newscient...-meteorite.html http://science.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/30/18628583-ancient-egyptian-space-jewelry-iron-in-bead-came-from-meteorite?lite= Edited June 1, 2013 by Still Waters Additional source link added

cormac mac airt Posted May 30, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 30, 2013 Previous analyses of the oldest of these – nine iron beads from a cemetery near the Nile – proved inconclusive on their origins. Now Johnson and colleagues have taken another look at one of the beads (pictured) and concluded that it is indeed from a meteorite. No "Egyptology standard reply" necessary. At first they didn't know for sure, now they do. That's rather straight-forward. cormac
Big Bad Voodoo Posted May 30, 2013 #4 Share Posted May 30, 2013 (edited) Thats logical. Something fall on earth and you took it as sign of gods. Also we know that Egyptians, Eskimos, Inka, Aztecs used iron from the sky for their knives. Edited May 30, 2013 by the L
