Looking for a new rpg or mmorpg

I was a Final Fantasy 11 super fan for about 5 years, but got bored with it (and got tired of paying every month to be bored).

I tried WoW and just couldn't get into it...just wasn't my thing.

I don't mind mmorpgs (massive multiplayer online role playing games), but I realize they are a time sink...designed to force you to spend a lot of time and money and there is always content you cannot solo. In Final Fantasy 11, your early levels could be such a drag trying to get people to help you unlock new jobs and such.

What I am looking for is something you can do both with. Something you can grind/level/skill-up solo and then maybe go online for specific special quests or such.

Something sort of like what "Monster Hunter 1" on the old PS2 was like. There were several quests you could do solo and then you could go online to take on the super hard quests with 2 or 3 other people. I really liked that game...it never got very good ratings though.

I think Diablo 2 had online/offline capability as well but I never got into that one. Diablo 3 is supposedly coming out soon but don't know much about it.

Final Fantasy 14 "A realm reborn" is coming out later this year as well, but it's a fulltime online mmorpg...and that is not what I am looking for.

Anyway, this is something I'd like to find. Hopefully something fairly recent that the servers won't be taken down in a couple of months. (sadly, Monster Hunter servers went down years ago). I don't have time to sit around and grind online all the time. I'd prefer one that allows you to do both.

Any suggestions?

Find a group for some tabletop RPGs, I ran a game for some younger guys who had only played online MMORPGs and such and they loved it.

Since i know not what consoles you have ill list a few of my faves

Rift - Currently Free to Play MMO - Decent wowesque gameplay but with a better story and easier to progress through leveling and various content alone (also very easy to do adventures and dungeons in a random group in a no pressure enviroment)

Neverwinter Online - Alot like above but not as compelling personally

Original Neverwinter 1 and 2 games, Great story based single player RPGs for PC

The Witcher Series. again great single player RPGs with an amazing story and a protagonist too love.

PS3 exclusive Ni No Kuni - Studio Ghibli style RPG for ps3 brilliantly made and really beautiful touching RPG

Xbox 360 Exclusive - Lost Odyssey amazing story, brilliant characters and fabulous game play. not one to miss!

Kingdoms of amalur reckoning- Well crafted RPG with decent story and over 100+ hours of content.

Replay some original FFs, 9 is my fave ^^

thats just off the top of my head. hope i helped even if just a little

Titan Quest is a great game, as is the expansion Immortal Throne, currently £14.99/ $19.99/€9.99 for the gold edition one stea, in it you get both original and expan. great deal. Although might be worth waiting for the steam summer sale, shouldent be long now.

I like some of the suggestions above. Some may call this blasephmy in the game world, but I play EQ2. It is a fulll online game, but is something to consider. Thre FTP format is pretty much open, the most open I've found so far with virtually no glitches in game. It is a time sink however. I guess I'm looking for the same game experience you are, especially with school coming back around the corner. You have the blizz game hearthstone in beta, which is a turn based card-game. And really thats all I can think of. MMO-HUT.com has alot of Ideas and reviews you can check out, but other than that I can't think of any atm. DIablo 3 is out, but my bro killed all the skill levels in a week or so. So it's not much of a challenge. Titans is another thats a 3-d first person PvP play also. It might be worth your time. You lvl as you battle! Although, it might be a different game Im thinking of XD

Diablo 3 has been out for a year or more. I bought it for my brother last Christmas. Haven't had a chance to play it myself yet, so I can't speak of its multiplayer content. But the original Diablo did indeed have a multiplayer content, from memory. Once you beat the game you could go back to the start with your character and play with other high level characters as you battle uber-level bad guys from the very start of the game.

Think he means for consoles, coming out like the 9th of july.

Thanks for the input. I guess there will never be another "Monster Hunter" like the first one. It was the perfect backdrop. A series of quests you could do offline...make money, skill up and gather material...but inevitably, you got to a point you could not go further and had to log into the "town". (The offline stuff occurred in "the village"). Once you decided to go to town, you could look to join a 4 man party to fight the Uber dragons...get super drops and cuts and build the ultimate equipment. So damn fun...

What monster hunter lacked was sustainability. Eventually, you will get the Fatalis (the final dragon) drops and get the super ultimate gear...and then...well...unless you just like parading around in the most awesome gear ever...(which I did) the game is basically beat. I resparked my interest in the game recently when I got the PS2 emulator and found you can hack the game and have solo access to the supposed "online" quests solo....nearly impossible...but still refreshing and fun as hell. I mean it takes 4 uber geared maniacs to take the Black Dragon down in regular play within the time limits...it's impossible to do solo...but it is fun to play though.

I have to say....I sincerely miss the old days of Final Fantasy 11. To me personally...it was right up there as being...quite possibly...the perfect mmorpg. But after 5 years...it started to lose it's luster. I really-really tried to like WoW. I tried really hard a couple of times...but it is not Final Fantasy....and it never will be. It seems more geared toward a specific audience and FF11 is wide open...the open, non linear architecture of the game I think is why I hold it in such high regard....it was just cool.

I know I prob will never find it's equal. Mainly cause I just don't have the time like I used to. I used to play FF11 for hours and hours on end...soooo addictive. My fav class...was the Beastmaster...man I loved my level 90 Beastmaster when I quit. I had leveled to 90 red mage too...but that was a pale reflection of my Beast. My Beastmaster was...well...a Beast! I could just about solo anything....and I liked that!

I started looking today at some online free to play (plus) games. Free to play and if you like you can buy into higher capability.

I tied Dungeons and Dragons a few months ago and found it lacking...it was so far off Final Fantasy I just couldn't take it.

I was looking into Age of Conan. It looks pretty decent but I will be seriously P.O'ed if I get started and they shut the servers down...it's been around awhile.

I am not opposed to a monthly fee...hell I paid 15.99 a month for over 5 years (main character and 3 mules). I just don't know what games have life in them.

One ultimate requirement for any game...I must be able to translate basic movement commands into my game controller. If I am forced to work from keyboard/mouse...I personally consider the game to be junk. I know...I have to use those things to talk or do this and that...but I like to kick back into a chair and be able to do 90% operations with a controller....which I could with FF11. The only time I needed to touch a mouse or keyboard was to interact with other gamers...everything else I had programmed into my controller. If I can't do that....the game in question already loses.

Thanks for the input.

I am seriously considering "Age of Conan"...but....I cannot seem to verify if I can program a controller to run it or not...and that bothers me....If you have played, let me know....I don't want to waste the time of download and install if it is broken before I get started.

The basic thing I am looking for above anything...even controllers....is if I can play offline and online....If I cannot do both, I am not interested...

Using Xpadder to map your Keyboard commands to a XBox360 or similar control pad can be achieved for pretty much any PC game. I dont think AoC has a in house controller support.

This guy has displayed what keys to button set up he uses.

Ah, didn't know that. I just assumed Diablo would be a PC-only game, as far as I know Diablo I and II never got the Console treatment I figured the same would be here. But that is interesting, I normally don't play PC-games, I would have made an exception for Diablo III when I got around to it, maybe I'll buy the Console version....

Sweet...I appreciate that. I mapped a controller for Dungeons and Dragons online but it still stunk up the air...just not a good game in my opinion. I'll chase that down...was always a huge Conan fan...even before Arnold made the movies...I remember Conan comics before there was a movie...Conan was the super duper he man of manliness...

In AoC...12 different classes to choose from...it appears they intentionally try to trick people. "Barbarian is "not" what Conan was...Conan was a Conqueror...an available class to pursue....As i read the forum about the game. it appears nothing you would initially think is the right class to play...I actually do not appreciate such "tricks"...anyone and everyone knows Conan was a "Barbarian" first and become a conqueror...the fact they work this out like they do seems intentionally deceptive...and I do not like that. When an "evil" class (Herald of Xotli)is considered the 'best" class...I also have issue with that....I guess I am just weird that way. I think I would like the Barbarian, the Conqueror, the Bear shaman or the Ranger...it appears though...certain jobs classes are frowned upon for online community game play...that is what I hate about online games. You end up having a 'mob rules" mentality and if you do not play the way others tell you, you just don't get to go anywhere.

The irony in all of this is actually applicable to this series of board (namely alternative history). The idea of an age before an age....that mankind actually rose up and advanced and something crushed us back into the darkness.

I ...despite my intellectual position...do not have a problem accepting this idea. "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain an idea without accepting it"...Aristotle

When you consider that mankind as we know it (homo sapiens) have been around roughly 200,000 years and it's only in the last 13,000 years we got our shiz together....I question that. We supposedly decided to build stuff out of the blue...Gobekli Tepe for instance....for no apparent reason...that occurred about 12-13 thousand years ago....so for 187,000 years...we were just happy to roam around and eat....I find that difficult to swallow...sorry. I think....for what it is worth...that Gobekli-Tepe is just the oldest thing we have found so far...I think older will come...just hide and watch. It will take the "experts" time to work out their extortion on one another to allow the truth to be released....but eventually, it will come.

So anyway...I am raging on the wrong board....I guess I don't want the local "experts" telling me how wrong I am....I know what is acceptable history and I know what is considered lunacy....I guess I like Lunacy. I think we are older and smarter than we give ourselves credit for. Ancient alien intervention?....absolutely not...I think "we" have been a clever ass bunch of folks for a very long time...the hidden history is what gives rise to the AA theory...and I think it is bogus.... We made all these wonderful things in an age we cannot explain...so we just make shiz up to work around it.

Age of Conan...I like the premise...the Hyborian age...something we today say was impossible....but I disagree...and yet I have to digress...I have no proof to say we advanced and evolved differently that the text books say. I just think we did.

Oh well....thanks for the inappropriate rant....

I would post this in the appropriate place, but I don't feel like hearing pages and pages of reasons I am wrong...It's just a thought....

Anywho.....

Age of Conan looks decent from everything I have read so far...I just hate the idea of pulling what happened with Dungeons and Dragons...hours of download followed by disappointing game play...

as far as history versus fantasy....I like to think the world is still filled with mystery and wonder. No matter how clever you are...no matter how many degrees you have to validate that...you will never convince me that humans sat around for 187,000 years and did nothing....you my friend...are mistaken.

I agree it is very deceptive of them to make conans class a Conqueror. i always felt the should of made Conqueror an active progression of the barbarian ( like conan) Say get to lvl 30 as a barb and BECOME the conqueror.

Correct.....conqueror should be an advancement of barbarian.....I can agree with that.....

I guess I am just going to have to download tihs thing and play it.

It's hard to be critical of something and not have played it....I just have reservations...

I have been disappointed so many times....I have recoiled.

I refuse to go back to FF11 and the 15.99 a month....my daughter is still in the throng and she loves it......

I think these kinda games are broken...but that is just my opinion....

I hate games (computer or paper) that tie a character to a "class"... I much prefer the ones where a character is free to expand out into whatever strikes the players fancy...

On the PC I do not play mmo games since the time I can spend on a game is limited and it seems that everyone I get around in the game does nothing with their lives but play that game...

The Elder Scrolls games (on PC/console) are the closest I've found to a classless game... and Skyrim has claimed almost all of my game time lately...

Paper games: I really do not like D+D for numerous reasons... My favorites are HarnMaster and The Empire of the Petal Throne (also called "Swords and Glory" or "Tekumel"),, plus my one my friends and i created on our own...

One game that I play and run is Battlelords, table-top RPG. No classes, characters are skill-based with some racial restrictions, but more or less everyone is free to choose whatever skills. Rules more focused onto combat as players more often are para-military types. No levels either, XP gets spent on skills.

Thanks for the input...my fav "paper" game was actually "palladium"....go figure....

AD&D was awesome in it's day....I think Gary Gygax would roll over in his grave if he knew what it had become....ok...I am assuming the guy is dead... have no idea.

I think we all measure things from that standard...whether we admit it or not....that is the standard from which we measure....

The game my friends and I designed is skill based, but each skill advances only by use or study. "Rank" 10 is the max for any skill, and use gains Learning Points (LP's)... 100 LPs earns 1 Experience Point (XP)... In order to advance a skill you must have 1 more XP than your current rank... A formula based on Attributes (8-20 pts), rank and "Native talents" (2-10 pts) determines the Success chance of any skill (0 to 100 normally)...

Skills come in two main types... Main Skills (Such as Mathematics - as an example) which we call "Blue Skills" because that line on the character sheet is blue... and "Specialty skills" which fall under the Main skill...

Specialty skills can actually be created by the players (with justification to the GM)... So for example under "Mathematics" a person could open specialty skills of Algebra, Geometry, or even trans-Dimensional Calculus... depending on the game time frame and tech levels... when the player is using a form of that skill that they are not specialist in, they check against the "Blue skill" (which always has a lower success chance - as you are not a "Specialist" in it...

So Specialist skills are open and easily molded to the game in progress....

Magic and Psionics (if allowed in the game) are a bit different... No "Blue Skills"... Each spell or Psi ability is designed by the player (with approval)...

This makes for a very fluid, wide open game, that we really like...

The game itself is easily used for any "period of history" or technology... We have played a wide range of "times" from "Cavepeople" (one of the co-designers is a woman), to far future Sci-Fi...

I picked up Skyrim again a couple of weeks ago and I'm enjoying it again but I find it gets boring very quick. I'm looking forward to Elder Scrolls online provided it has decent casual play value

Gary died in his home on March 4, 2008 at age of 69.

AD&D 2nd Edition was the longest game I've played in, though we knew THAC0 well at the time, I wasn't upset to see it go.

To hit armor class zero......

What a benchmark....

I'm looking at Age of Conan...it seems ok....I just dislike the fact it is online only. I was really hoping for a game could do both. Monster Hunter for the win....
