Although abhorrent to people in the west, the forced marriage of children is endemic in the near & middle east and asia, with girls as young as 8 being forcibly married to much older men, often in their 30's.

cultural differences aside, the idea of consummating a marriage to a child is barbaric, and the sooner the practice is outlawed, the better.

there can be no justification for what, to all intents & purposes, is the sanctioned rape of children.

That is the modern, Western view. The islamic view is entirely different. These clerics are not insane or evil, they simply pious believers in the Koran and the Haddith.

Perhaps, but their view is not based on common sense and reason. I understand that it's approved because it's considered their culture, but it is a self-serving and antiquated viewpoint. Just like genital mutilation practiced in some societies, there is just no logic behind these practices. It's interesting, too, how so many of these barbaric rituals are aimed at young females.
