shrooma Posted July 25, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) an 11yo girl from Yemen has fled her home and gone to live with her uncle after she found out her parents had arranged a 'forced marriage' for her- . http://www.essentialkids.com.au/older-kids/development-for-older-kids/yemeni-girl-flees-parents-to-escape-forced-marriage-20130725-2qkcs.html . Although abhorrent to people in the west, the forced marriage of children is endemic in the near & middle east and asia, with girls as young as 8 being forcibly married to much older men, often in their 30's. cultural differences aside, the idea of consummating a marriage to a child is barbaric, and the sooner the practice is outlawed, the better. there can be no justification for what, to all intents & purposes, is the sanctioned rape of children. The guy in that story needs to be passed around like a peace pipe in a US prison....THEN he'd understand how cruel what he did to that child actually was....

Zaphod222 Posted July 25, 2013 #9 Share Posted July 25, 2013 new rulings trying to get the age of consent raised to 17 were overturned by religious leaders. Of course. Mohammed took Aisha as wife when she was 7 (yes, seven). And Mohammed is the perfect man, to be emulated. So you have this rule whereever you have Shariah. And alas, it is gradually spreading in Europe too.

MacsMom Posted July 25, 2013 #11 Share Posted July 25, 2013 Ridiculous and brutal. There is NO WAY a young child can perform the duties of a "wife", whether domestically, in the kitchen, or in the bedroom. It's child slavery and pedophelia, no other way around it.

That is the modern, Western view. The islamic view is entirely different. These clerics are not insane or evil, they simply pious believers in the Koran and the Haddith.

These clerics are not insane or evil, they simply pious believers in the Koran and the Haddith. Perhaps, but their view is not based on common sense and reason. I understand that it's approved because it's considered their culture, but it is a self-serving and antiquated viewpoint. Just like genital mutilation practiced in some societies, there is just no logic behind these practices. It's interesting, too, how so many of these barbaric rituals are aimed at young females.
