stevemagegod Posted July 28, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 28, 2013 (edited) Can the FBI/Interpol lock your Computer remotely if you been to a porn site or anything other illegal that is being monitored? I never downloaded anything and the ransom malware locked me out of my desktop took over my webcam, recorded my ip, and took a picture of me. I saw it was taking over my webcam so i went to shut the lid and moved a inch or so out of the way before it toke a picture. (It did catch a picture of my room and me but its a Good thing the lighting in my room sucks and you can't even make out my face just the outline of my head). I am Computer Savvy and managed to regain control of my Computer it was a b**** but i did do it. I believe the Virus was called the MoneyPak FBI virus. It looked so dam official i practically **** myself until i read the whole thing and got to the part where they were asking for $300 to remove it or face criminal charges within 48 hours. (Good thing i removed it before the 48 hours were up so take that ****** hackers). I know it was ransom malware but i am still slightly concerned that i may get a knock on the door from the FBI. LostSouls7 Posted July 28, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 28, 2013 Ransom ware is created by hackers. It instead of just breaking into your pc.. or messing up.. they make these fake FBI things.. and ask for money. The FBI is not going to ask you for money I think more than porn sites have this virus.. but there are tutorials on youtube how to get rid of ransom ware
Ever Learning Posted July 28, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 28, 2013 they have websites here as well, i just called up local police station and they said there was nothing to worry about. they have had a quite alot of calls from people. getting rid of it can be annoying but can be achieved by youtubing the solution.

After restarting the computer in Safe Mood didn't work i went on youtube and found that i needed to restart the computer in Safe Mode with Networking. After that didn't work i really started to panic and restarted with CMD restored my Computer and managed to regain control. This is why everyone in my family has there own laptop these days because of what just happened (If the Computer gets ****ed up at least i can fix it myself without losing everyone else's information just because i was whorny at the time). I am so grateful i did not have to take it to geek squad or something because it completely locked me out of my desktop. +DieChecker Posted July 29, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 29, 2013 (edited) I think the FBI wouldn't have to resort to such an action as a ransom virus. They would simply do something that collects your IP based on traffic to a monitored site (Such as porn) and then use that to find your internet supplier, and then contact them to find out who you are and where you live. I've never heard of the FBI tracking down individual porn users. They'd have like 75 million hits each day to follow up on. The issue is much too wide for the FBI to try to police users. They can only just barely try to police the suppliers. Edited July 29, 2013 by DieChecker
Stardrive Posted July 29, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 29, 2013 Unplug your modum and router from thier power sources. Then run your anti-virus scan. When the scan is complete and the virus is removed, shutdown your computer. Then plug your modum and router back into thier power sources. When you fire your computer back up you should be good to go.

It was as if nothing ever happened. Ran Malware Anti-Bytez to be on the Safe side and removed any traces that might be left over. (Both Safe Mode, and Safe Mode with Networking Support didn't work which was a surprise). Edited July 30, 2013 by stevemagegod
Stardrive Posted July 30, 2013 #9 Share Posted July 30, 2013 Your welcome! There are a few different versions of the scam in circulation. The version I was called upon to rid resided on the computer hard drive AND the modum. Hence my suggested method of getting things back to normal.
No Censorship Posted August 1, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 1, 2013 I had a peripheral experience. Out of curiosity, I watched a You Tube clip of an interview with an antiwar activist, who was investigated and stalked by the FBI, on "All Things Considered". He was to the left of me on the political spectrum, but I was concerned that his civil rights were violated. Anyway, my computer crashed/froze/disappeared/whatever for the first (and hopefully last) time while I watched that clip.

Vilhelm11 Posted September 6, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 6, 2013 FYI - recent versions of this virus block safe mode, still one can use a separate bootbale drive with AV pre-installed, her is an instruction on how to create a bootable SUB with hitman - http://privacy-pc.com/how-to/remove-fbi-moneypak-virus-if-safe-mode-doesnt-work.html
Sdhorm Posted December 17, 2013 #18 Share Posted December 17, 2013 I'm sorry for bringing this back up, but I needed to know. I had a similar issue. Computer got locked, a yellow and white window saying the FBI locked my computer, and even told me my computer's IP address. But at the bottom it had 2 different things of ways to "pay to unlock the computer". I had no issues unlocking my computer(started up but went to advanced booting options, chose repair computer, did a system restore to a few days before the lock, boom, unlocked). I did try a simple off/on and the lock would be gone for like, 2 minutes upon startup before it came back up. And it said that first time offenses would be removed from my record if I paid before 2/18. After reading some of these comments, it makes me feel like I'm safe and that I was simply given one of those ransom viruses, but I need confirmation. regeneratia Posted December 17, 2013 #20 Share Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) I have the camera covered up. Most days, it is silence here. I unplug the computer at night and sometimes during the day, which is easy enough to do. And I have an entire bookmark folder on how the FBI broke the LAW for YEARS on phone record searches, with lots of files created stored in odd places that say the very same thing. When they are looking thru my computer, I want them to know that they break the law all the time, and that, indirectly, they cannot be enforcing the law if they are breaking it. Thnis link and article are plastered all over my computer, for I like this article to continue to get a lot of hits, which I personally do about once a day: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/18/AR2010011803982.html It is posted on a bulletin board, with a note to the FBI/NSA/CIA/DIA/ETC to leave the house cleaner than they found it. You recovered from it correctly, IMHO.
