seeder Posted August 5, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2013 (edited) Theres a lot of this lately isnt there? Monster sinkhole that swallowed Kansas pasture! Residents in western Kansas are being warned to watch their step after a gigantic sinkhole opened up overnight this week in the area, swallowing an entire pasture. In a shocking development that has left many in the area scratching their heads, the Wallace County Sheriff's officials say the enormous 90-feet-deep chasm measuring 200 across feet has since continued spreading, gobbling up more land. The freak sinkhole has left many people in the rural area on edge while drawing others to gape at the odd phenomenon north of Sharon Springs. http://www.dailymail...l#ixzz2b4AFvjXc Edited August 5, 2013 by Still Waters Removed copyrighted image

archer95446 Posted August 5, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 5, 2013 Christmas day, of last year, a sink hole opened up beneath me, in our back yard. I couldn't get a foothold, to climb out, but, I used my arms, to hold on to the ground, that hadn't sunk in, and to pull myself out of it. Talk about a nightmare coming to life!!! My legs got all cut up, thankfully, that's all!!! This hole is about 4 ft. wide and I don't know how deep it goes. My husband used a flashlight to peer in it and noticed the top of a really old septic tank. I put a huge peice of plywood over the top of the hole. Thankfully the hole hasn't gotten bigger!!! We're not sure what to do, some say to just fill it in with dirt, some say to demolish the old septic tank, then, fill in with dirt and gravel. Someone even said that we need a geoengineer to look at it, to determine what would be the best way to fill it in. I just hope it doesn't get larger, while waiting until we can afford to "fix it"!!!
Orcseeker Posted August 6, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 6, 2013 i wonder if it all means something? especially if this recurring quite often, the world is p***ed thats for sure Taking out groundwater makes the soil above unstable due to creating large gaps of emptiness where the water one was. So since the ground is still wet, the ground collapses. Try to encourage people to be more responsible with water.

That is a very common occurance. Most of the people I know that have had this happen just filled the hole in with yard brush and whatever heavy fill they could find.
