Tougher sentencing for dangerous dogs

Still Waters

Plans to impose tougher punishments on owners of dogs that kill or injure people will do little to stop the attacks happening, the RSPCA has warned.

Under proposals being considered by the Government, owners could face the same sentences as motorists convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.

Well that might make people be more careful about their dog and take responsibility for them.

I think there is much more than needs to be done, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

i hate it when i see people who can barely hold onto their dogs while walking, if you dont have the upperbody strength and havent trained your dog, your not a suitable dog owner.

On the face of it I like this proposal... However remembering back to the news article about the government cracking down on dogs defending their owners homes from burglars I don't know...

Maybe that's what happened here -

I agree that people should be responsible (legal liability) for damages done by their animals but I also think careless drivers need to be held responsible for running down dogs as well. I live in a rural area and had a puppy killed a week ago by an ******* driving waaaay too fast at night. I shared the responsibility due to even having the dog out walking at night but, really? Is it too much to ask in such a setting to be able to let a puppy walk unrestrained? I guess it is. It's a mistake I'll never make again but I'm still seething over it. It was just so damned senseless. And he never even slowed down, let alone apologize.
