NASA Spacecraft Capture an Earth Directed Coronal Mass Ejection

On August 20, 2013 at 4:24 am EDT, the sun erupted with an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection or CME, a solar phenomenon which can send billions of tons of particles into space that can reach Earth one to three days later. These particles cannot travel through the atmosphere to harm humans on Earth, but they can affect electronic systems in satellites and on the ground.

Experimental NASA research models, based on observations from NASA’s Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory show that the CME left the sun at speeds of around 570 miles per second, which is a fairly typical speed for CMEs..

According to Space Weather ( http://spaceweather.com/ ) it will miss earth and we will pass through the wake...

it was only an M-3 flare so I don't think it's much to get excited about. Guess we'll see in 1 to 3 days.

Oops...my bad. The one I was looking at actually erupted on the 17th and the aurora should be tonight and tomorrow. Space weather doesn't have anything up yet about this flare that occurred today...

Filament Eruption and CME

A large filament channel located in the southern hemisphere lifted off the sun very early Tuesday morning and generated a bright coronal mass ejection (CME). So far it appears that a majority of the plasma cloud will be directed towards the south, however I will provide further updates.

CME UPDATE: The new CME prediction model released by the Goddard Space Flight Center is calling for a glancing blow impact to our geomagnetic field early on August 23rd. This is the result of this mornings filament eruption in the southern hemisphere. A majority of the plasma cloud is heading south of the ecliptic plane. Then northern flank is what is expected to deliver the glancing blow. When viewing the plasma cloud in the latest STEREO Ahead COR2 video, the possible Earth directed component is not too impressive. Widespread geomagnetic storming is not expected at this time
