New Gun Control steps

WASHINGTON (AP) — Striving to take action where Congress would not, the Obama administration announced new steps Thursday on gun control, curbing the import of military surplus weapons and proposing to close a little-known loophole that lets felons and others circumvent background checks by registering guns to corporations.

Four months after a gun control drive collapsed spectacularly in the Senate, President Barack Obama added two more executive actions to a list of 23 steps the White House determined Obama could take on his own to reduce gun violence. With the political world focused on Mideast tensions and looming fiscal battles, the move signaled Obama's intent to show he hasn't lost sight of the cause he took up after 20 first graders and six adults were gunned down last year in an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

Good luck taking firearms from Southerners. The Federal Government tried to infringe on our rights and way of life once before. Didn't turn out so well.

yet another amendment attacked by this administration

Between Bush and Obama, they've officially destroyed the Fourth Amendment.

Good luck taking firearms from Southerners. The Federal Government tried to infringe on our rights and way of life once before. Didn't turn out so well.

You're referring to when the North invaded the South? Yeah..

That didn't turn out well for anyone.

What part of "shall not infringe" don't these idiots understand??

They're Socialist's who want to destroy the last remaining pieces of our Constitutional Republic.

Usurpers.

They understand. They just don't care. They know best. Quiet subject!

And if you disagree with their anti-Gun agenda you are a neo-Confederate in the eyes of the MSM.

I wouldn't say its an anti gun agenda more of a pro "citizens being unable to stand up against all the horrible crap being done" agenda

I'm not sure how I feel about this.. They aren't actually taking away anyone guns, or barring the sales of guns in country. They are restricting the import of guns from out of country sources, and possibly restricting people like felons from getting guns. On the surface it does not look too bad, but I do have to wonder what lurks beneath...

How are we (citizens) supposed to be able to "stand up against all the horrible crap being done" by our government if we don't have guns? It is definetly a anti-gun agenda. Anyone that thinks otherwise hasn't been paying attention.

I'm in favor of restricting felons from getting guns. I don't disagree with that at all.

However, as you pointed out, there is a catch.

Spot on.

they already are.

I'm aware of that. I probably should have worded my post better.

I meant I support the restrictions already in place.

I didn't mean I supported creating restrictions for felons; that would be redundant.

(I have a friend - not a friend anymore - who is a felon)

but new steps have nothing to do with it,

99% of military surplus weapons are 50+ years old bolt action rifles, that are sold following same rules and regulation that any other new hunting rifle build in usa does.

also i have not heard of single case when a felon regestered a gun to a corparation. have you?

Democrats in the states tend to be "anti-gun," and Republicans often the opposite. However, in most countries both the left and the right support banning all private use of guns. The Americas in general and some Islamic countries are anomalous.

Because in a democracy single-issue voters often get their way regardless, it doesn't seem likely that much more than what has already been done will happen in the states, in spite of ongoing gun-caused tragedies.

This is in fact a fairly minor thing in the picture of what is happening in the States, but can seen as symptomatic of its general decline. That people talk about their need to have guns to protect themselves both from criminals (because guns are so easy for criminals to get) and from the government is to me even more indicative of the country's moral and social decline.

Good point.

I can't say I have; mind, I ask, what is the point behind registering a gun to a corporation?

I agree - this is merely a cog in the greater mechanics going on..

The moral decline is obvious to anyone who pays attention to the news, unfortunately.

My generation is ushering in a new era of social apathy..

So long as they get handouts and continue being immersed in technology, they don't care.

The fact citizens are waking up is a sure sign that the government is taking more steps to prepare themselves.

Neither have I..

Perhaps that's why this is so unsettling?

In the past i thought there was the anti gun folks just had a different point of view and saw guns as the cause of violence. I can disagree but at least understand where they are coming from. I think of those as anti gun.

At one time I could have given the administration the benefit of the doubt and thought they may have been coming from there. Now i see their efforts to take any power We the people have away because they are doing and constantly continue to do stuff we don't want.

I agree with the bold.... Since you can see the social decline from across the pond, why would you ask those that are upright citizens to disarm themselves when the criminals are getting harder to identify, and by far more radical?

Well one way to diminish the decline would be to make guns almost impossible to possess, except for hunters and ranchers in restricted circumstances and by the police and army, but then with controls. In many countries, both autocratic and democratic, this has been done and it results in a much safer situation.

I don't expect that sort of thing to happen in the States -- because of its moral and social environment.

This is where we start to disagree, as always. You think the solution is to make guns impossible to possess, I (and many others) think that idea is impossible.

Also to mention, we have plenty of crooked cops and politicians, they're the last ones I would want to control all of the firearms.

Guns exist; there is no absolute safety, but I prefer a reasonable solution over demanding a perfect solution and getting nothing.

A reasonable solution would be to have severe penalties, including extended jail time, for anyone caught with illegal guns and or committing a crime with one. But that is too logical for our judicial system.

Having any possession with certain exceptions a crime in itself makes carrying out this sort of thing much easier for the police to do.
