This is quite a long article but worth reading right through. It shows that even though as a nation we are consuming less in the way of sugary drinks and sweets than we did a few years back, we are still eating way too much sugar. We have replaced sugary drinks with fruit juice thinking that is healthier, but in fact it means we are consuming vast quantities of fruit-sugars. Eating the whole fruit is much healthier.

The article also shows how food manufacturers have gradually got us addicted to sugar(yes, it is addictive!), by adding it to foods that simply don't need sweetening(bread for instance).

This is proably an exaggeration but these Canadian scientist and their study claim it is as addictive as cocaine

Im only 19 but over the past 2 years I have been making sure the food I buy has been getting more and more organic and healthier because of reasons like this. .

In the article I've linked it says that sugar is actually more addictive than cocaine! Rats were made addicted to cocaine but once they discovered sugar they chose that over cocaine!!!!

Simply put read the label and if it has any form of sugar (fructose being the most common and the worst), anywhere on the list, don't buy it. You will end up eating very little that comes out of the food industry and it's kinda hard at first but in the end it's worth it. (You will also find you spend less on food.)

I've started making my own sugar-free bread but recently had cause to buy a small loaf ....... I couldn't believe how sweet it tasted; almost like cake! There is absolutely no need for bread to have sugar in it. Try buying breakfast cereal that's sugar-free ..... it's almost impossible. I've made up my own muesli mix for years: rolled oats, sunflower seeds, dessicated coconut and toasted flaked almonds, with unsweetened soya milk ....... you can't beat it!! :tu:

People have always loved sweet things, it's not something new but the problem now is that most never eat 'real' food, most people buy ready made sauces, meals, etc that are packed with sugar to make it taste better. I have a sweet tooth but when I'm hungry I would never choose a cupcake over a steak and salad.

What worries me is the amount of sweetners we are ingesting actually, alll that 'synthetic' sugar that comes straight from a lab.

Well that's one of the reasons I like living in Vietnam. There's lots of sugary things around here but there's also lots of things without sugar, and the kids generally get their sugar straight by sucking sugar cane. One of the little pleasures of life I have to do without because of my pre-diabetic situation.

I tried sugar cane when I was in Africa, but I didn't really like it...and it didn't taste like sugar...more like sweetened water, I don't know how to explain it.

But children love sugary things even more than adults, and their first sweet addiction starts when they are babies, with milk.

I've had consultations, both in Vietnam and in the States, with diabetes specialists. I'm not diabetic now but I almost was, and sugar is the main source of the problem (that and lack of exercise).

Now I know I gotta die anyway, but now I realize that my life until then can be miserable or not miserable depending on how I behave.

Lack of exercise, sugar and stress: the killers of modern man (and woman).

I don't really exercise but I try to walk everywhere I can...I usually walk 2 hours a day, to and from the house, weekdays. But I'm 43 now and I know I will have to do more soon to keep fit and healthy.

I don't want to stop eating sugar! lol

I get a kick out of buying sugar cane (which isn't as bad since it's unprocessed) and handing out bits of it to the poorer kids. They get quite excited and of course soon have a sugar high (since they aren't use to it) and run all over the place shouting and laughing).

As Vietnam has gotten more advanced and open the Western soft drinks and fruit juices have appeared, as well as candy. These are okay for most people so long as they consume it wisely and informedly. There was a time when these things were kept out of the country, but I tend to think the present policy of restricting advertising and public messages is better.

Because you are addicted!! If you made your diet sugar-free even for just four or five days, you would probably find you didn't want it any more. Next step is to find sugar-free replacements(as you said, sweetener-free too), and then after a while you'll find that food/drinks with sugar in just taste way too sweet.

But this is the whole point! Because it is addictive it is impossible for most people to consume it wisely.

You would be shocked how numb your taste buds are from all the sugar. When you stop eating sugar for a while everything taste so much richer.

Sugar is necessary for life. Without it one would die. It's the "gasoline" of the human body.

However, the type(simple sugars, complex carbohydrates, etc) and the need for it changes over time and personal health or disease. That's where one has to be careful. Especially with diabetes.

But, on topic, I find the notion of sugar being addictive to be rediculous.

That would be like saying water is addictive.

They are both NEEDED for sustaining life, so "addiction" is not proper in this context.

Yes I know from watching my own kids that Pepsi and "energy drinks" are addictive, and I suppose sugar is part of it, but so is the caffeine. I have had discussions with them about it, and of course they don't want to end up like me ( :yes: ) so I have seen them reduce consumption a lot.

Yea I think things like food and water are addictive. Try doing without them for awhile -- indeed, try to keep weight you have lost permanently off. That is one of our body's natural ways of forcing us to do what it needs even when our wills oppose it.

However, the body is not intelligent and informed, and its methods are blunt and unsophisticated, and it can and does often get it wrong.

I live with someone who is addicted to sugar. They cannot go a day without a family sized bottle of fizzy drink, and a king size block of chocolate, plus several packets of sweets. They get intolerable and extremely difficult to get along with if they don't get their sugar fix, or if they are crashing from the high intake of sugar. I know they are addicted because despite a dentists bill of a couple of thousand dollars, and being told by the dentist to stop the fizzy drinks and high sugar intake, they refuse to stop . So that goes against logic and basic common sense. They also suffer eczema which I am sure is due to the sugar intake, as it {sugar} has been found to cause eczema.

Sugars needed to sustain life, is not what this article is about, and what you are talking about comes naturally in fruits and vegetables.

Regarding ^ ^ ^ :I think too much sugar definitely aggravates any ailment with an itchy element to the symptoms, even if it doesn't actually cause it.

We get all the "sugar" we need from complex carbohydrates turned into glucose by the liver. Taking refined sugars directly, especially in liquid form where it is immediately absorbed, messes the hell out of your sugar/insulin feedback loops and over time as a result brings on diabetes and obesity and other issues.

I sure wish I had known that twenty years ago.
