US braces for possible government shutdown

Still Waters

I doubt that Obama will give up or even delay Obamacare: I think the Republicans will eventually cave when they see the political damage, but then it will be too late for them.

I don't know if Obamacare will be good or bad; it is a hodge podge of socialist and capitalist sops, so it will probably cause harm that will be mitigated over time. I don't think something of the sort can be or should be prevented.

After ten years all this will be forgotten and the Republicans will come back to power (this will be after eight more years of Democrat rule), probably in a big way. By then a national medical system will be as ingrained as is Social Security, and the Republicans will run on other issues.

In order for it to be a compromise both sides have to get something and lose something. The republicans get Obamacare defunded and lose what? The opportunity to shut down the government?

Getting something in exchange for not doing harm isn't called compromise. I believe the word is extortion.

The Republicans objective is to defund Obama care. The democrats objective is to fund it.

So by voting to postpone it so that they can pass a budget so that people don't go without a paycheck when the government shuts down is a compromise.

Making neither side succeed or fails at its objective= Comprise to avoid government shutdown.

That's probably not the way the majority of people will see it, especially the "have nots", so I think the Republicans just shot themselves in the foot...again. I admire the Republican's audacity, but I think it's all been in vain. I guess we'll all find out next election cycle, won't we?

Besides that, even if the senate passed any bills that came from the house, you can be sure Obama will veto any bill that screws with his ACA. He's not gonna let it go. You can tell by his determination to stick it to the Republicans for messing with his baby.

I agree it probably isent. If your a republican politician right now you are really out of luck.

If you don't stand against it then your base supporters back home will probably vote you out.

And if you do stand against it then your at risk of making a lot people mad, then you get voted out.

We just have to see tell next election

Hmmmm...do I dare say it again this time, on this specific topic? Yeah, I think it really does apply here......

"Damned if you do, damned if you don't" :P

Edit: Just thought of this......

However, I think Cruz and a few others, say a very small minority of Republicans, have definitely secured their place for reelection. I think Cruz and those few, know it as well. I'd say they're really good at what they do and know how to play the political football. In other words, they just covered their butts.

But acidhead, you live here in Canada. Where's your dog in the fight?

If your neighbour's house is on fire, you worry if yours will catch light too.

And worse, where will all the homeless Yanks go? Won't be Mexico.

I'd prefer Canada to Mexico.

I hear Canadians are nice folk.

I'd fit in; mind my own business, read books, listen to records in peace and quiet.

But you're right.. One government ultimately affects one another.

The United States and Canada has a great trade relationship.

Wow your thoughts are so clouded by partisan propaganda.

First off the republicans want to defund Obama care. That is the primary goal. And obviously the democrats do not.

The republicans tried to pass a budget but it excluded finace for Obama care so the democrats amended it and sent it to the house.

The republicans are sending a second bill back to the senate along with their amended budget plan. The second bill is to allow the military to get paid even if the government shuts down and to postpone the implementation of obamacare for another year so that both parties can agree on a budget.

To me the republicans seem like the ones compromising.

If the democrats shoot down the compromise that the republican house is about to send to the democrat senate then it will be very clear that the democrats are the ones not compromising who will end up shutting down the government.

Your blind party loyalty sometimes amazes me

The good news is that we already had a shutdown back in the 1990s under Newt.

We came through that shutdown just fine.

The White House can't fire up the old Armageddon Routine like they did with the Sequester. Remember that?!

We did, the Republican party lost after that giving the Dems a majority for almost a decade.

and in related news:

POLL: Just one in four approve of Republicans handling of government shutdown standoff

On the eve of a government shutdown, Americans disapprove of all players in Washington’s latest budget standoff in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, although they save particular ire for Republicans’ handling of the fight to fund the government beyond midnight.

Barely one in four (26 percent) approve of congressional Republicans’ handling of budget negotiations, while 34 percent approve of their Democratic counterparts and 41 percent approve of Obama’s approach. In each case, larger numbers say they “disapprove” of how Republicans, Democrats and Obama are handling things. Underscoring the disgruntled mood, 27 percent of Americans disapprove of all three.

Polling data is different this time around.

Senator Ted Cruz is the new leader in the U.S. Senate.

There will be no shutdown. Obama will blink. Drop kick ObamaCare for 1 year. That way we ALL get an exemption.

Im guessing you heard Ted Cruz say "drop kick", now you feel the need to say it in every post. Have you ever had an original idea?

27% disapprove of all 3. That's bad news for the White House.

It's all about the polling data.

Real bad news for the White House...Obama might not get that third term... :passifier:

No. Senator Ted Cruz wants to - defund - ObamaCare. Speaker Boehner wants to drop kick ObamaCare for 1 year.

The MSM prefers the term - punt -.

It's easy to see the endgame. No shutdown. There's an important election in just 13 months!

Ah, the famous last words of Newt revisited...

And once again: All they learn from history is that they keep making the same error over and over again.

The big problem with Obama is that he is a failure internationally and now domestically.

Putin punked Obama. Syria is a mess. Putin is in charge.

After this compromise Obama will be a lame duck for the rest of his presidency.

Obama has not shown any leadership.

Senator Ted Cruz is calling the shots.

The White House may in fact speed dial President Bill Clinton........again.

Remember?

This will end badly for Obama. He doesn't know what he is doing. It's Amateur Hour at the White House.

Right now Obama is trying to hide behind Harry Reid. It's sad.

Yeh, yeh... wait 3 weeks. That is when the FDA food inspectors walk off the job for non-payment. Obama can wait. In fact he can wait much longer than Congress.

Need some help here please...

What exactly is in a government shutdown? Is there a site or sites that lists everything that does and does not get shut down? And who gets paid while off, or who gets stop on pay, that sort of info? I keep seeing bits and pieces in articles.. But google isn't being friendly for me today with looking this subject up, lol.

I get what it is in general, just having the dickens of a time coming up with list information.

Basically it is that the government has no more money to pay its employees, so they all get send home except those on mandatory spending. The Washington Post had a list showing what departments would be affected and how they would be affected.

Some people actually are retained as skeleton staff to not shutdown indispensable facilities, but the money to pay them will also run out if there is no budget in the foreseeable future. And then, depending on their work contracts, they most probably just walk off.

I seem to recall that we just went through a shutdown, or a near shutdown, and China bought up our debt. What happens when they come to collect and we are even deeper in the shizznat? It seems that we all want more money and there isn't any left...?
