US braces for possible government shutdown

Still Waters

And my microbiology teacher told us that when Russia was the Soviet Union in the last years of its life, they quit paying the workers but made them continue..and for two years the biologists in control of the USSR equivalent of their main Bio lab 4 sold some of the vials of pathogens..when the cleanup committees went in to tally the vials some 300 were missing, undoubtedly sold to other countries by the scientists to put food on their tables. They are pretty sure most were smallpox vials, but the others? Who knows. And if that happens here? Are we the next failing nation?

Syria is a mess. Putin is in charge.

Putin in charge of Syria is a good thing. You've failed miserably to point out otherwise.

The Republicans objective is to defund Obama care. The democrats objective is to fund it.

It's already funded. Using the Debt Ceiling as extortion won't stop the exchanges from opening tomorrow. Republicans are having a tantrum.

Was listening to conservative talk radio on the way home from work today and there were a lot of conservatives calling in saying that we should shut down the government anyway. Saying it would do the US good and force some belt tightening....

We did, the Republican party lost after that giving the Dems a majority for almost a decade.

And it plus some personal problems destroyed Newt's political career.

It looks to me as though contingency planning has been going on for awhile so that the "shutdown" isn't really a shutdown. Obama carries the nation through it and ends up a hero, and the Republicans lose. The ideological extremes of both parties are really composed of morons, in this case of the Republican party.

Bucking a sitting president in such an extreme way is bound to lose, even though the trauma is largely fictional.

I doubt that Obama will give up or even delay Obamacare: I think the Republicans will eventually cave when they see the political damage, but then it will be too late for them.

I don't know if Obamacare will be good or bad; it is a hodge podge of socialist and capitalist sops, so it will probably cause harm that will be mitigated over time. I don't think something of the sort can be or should be prevented.

After ten years all this will be forgotten and the Republicans will come back to power (this will be after eight more years of Democrat rule), probably in a big way. By then a national medical system will be as ingrained as is Social Security, and the Republicans will run on other issues.

Under "normal" circumstances I think your assessment would be accurate. But this plan is so flawed that it simply can NOT be funded over time. It will collapse under it's own weight but by that time it will have ruined what was a reasonably well functioning healthcare system and left us with mediocrity for the masses and excellent care for the wealthy. A step backwards in the name of "fairness".

So - all part of "the plan" then?

Will the masses be rewarded with an increase in the chocolate ration from 4 to 3 in order to celebrate?

Whether the system is flawed or not seems a matter of who is describing it and what their agenda may be. You cannot, however, persuade me that what the States had before was "reasonably well functioning." I've been sick in the States, and ended up waiting for hours and hours and being charged outrageously for rude and minimal care.

Democrats are more than happy to raise the debt ceiling so that we can pay bills for services already purchased. Republicans do not.

Democrats are more than happy to put your great grand children in debt to pay for their idiotic ideas. Republicans aren't much better.

The republicans actually have been acting fairly reasonable to me.

They are going to send a separate bill along with the budget to get voted on saying that even if the government gets shut down the military still gets paid. And they added to postpone the implementation of Obama care for a year so that both parties can agree on a budget and just vote on Obama care funding later.

Lets see if the senate actually takes the compromise.

Apparently they've shut down for the night. There will be no vote or compromise tonight.

SHUTDOWN TIME BABY!!

Aren't most Federal Workers unionized? I'd say let the union support the workers during the shutdown. Doubtless the union coffers are DEEP.

I think the Republicans were very much following the rules of trying to get what they want, while the Dems in the Senate was screaming, "NO! NO!" like a 3 year old being told there will be no ice cream after dinner. Did the Senate even TRY talking. You know, like going for 30 days, or only offering 3 particular minor parts of Obamacare, or maybe just the Medical Devices repeal??

I did notice that the Senate and Obama put that Soldier's Pay bill through on a rocket sled. Oh, no, can't have the military getting mad at Obama. Because you know that most military members would blame the President (and correctly) for their payroll.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2013/09/29/government-shutdown-gop-obamacare-obama-column/2892347/

Barbara Anderson, Newburyport (Mass.) Daily News: "Obama and Democratic leaders want bipartisan compromise, i.e., they want it all done their way. They seem to think that our Founding Fathers made a mistake in giving the House the 'power of the purse.' ... Should Republicans roll over, fund the train wreck, uncomplainingly agree to another unbalanced budget, borrow until the national debt doubles again?"

The Topeka Capital-Journal, editorial: "The law certainly has its flaws, but the president is not going to sign any legislation that abandons it, and threats to shut down the government or force it into default won't change that. It is time for Republicans and Democrats alike, including Obama, to crawl out of their entrenched positions and begin working together in good faith to amend the (law) and fix its worst flaws — as soon as they take steps to keep the government running."

About 35% of government workers are unionized. So about 1 in 3. Unions supporting that 1 might convince the other 2 to unionize though.....

And to be honest, I always expected them to shutdown the government. If not for this then perhaps for the debt ceiling or some other issue. The attitude of congress lately has been, "My way, or we burn the country down!" After listening to the news and even some people here on the forum, it seems that a lot of people just plain want to shut the government down regardless.

They want to shut down the Federation, regardless, is more exact.

No, military members would not blame the president for their pay. The military got paid yesterday, and don't get paid again until the 15th. The bill was just for show by the republicans, as there will be no need for it. To allow the shutdown to go that long would put the United States in default.

Yawn.

Republicans - it's your fault.

Democrats - it's your fault.

Public - will believe whatever biased news source they agree with.

Again... statements and mentality such as what you posted above make you part of the problem... not the solution. I consider myself to be a conservative.... but I am open minded about it. Rush Limbough is arrogant, objective and unmoving when it comes to the harsh reality of whats going on in this country. In order to fix this country and the issues we have right now you cant sit on one side of the fence or the other. It is far beyond time that we kick the fence down and try to make PROGRESS. We cant do that as a country as long as the citizens play into the political bias game that the media sets up for us.
