Shape Shifting Metals

New shape-shifting metals discovered

A new shape-changing metal crystal is reported in the journal Nature, by scientists at University of Minnesota.

It is the prototype of a new family of smart materials that could be used in applications ranging from space vehicles to electronics to jet engines.

Called a "martensite", the crystal has two different arrangements of atoms, switching seamlessly between them.

It can change shape tens of thousands of times when heated and cooled without degrading, unlike existing technology.

If we're this close, could the Roswell metal have been a truth?

If it literally fell out of the sky in 1947 would it really take 66 years to reverse engineer? Assuming everyone in the Galaxy only has the same periodic table.

ah that old chestnut. If the roswell metal was (allegedly) undentable, unbreakable, and could reform its shape....

why was it in pieces????

But good link! :tu:

well the problem is NOT the existence of these materials but the construction of a vehicle capable of shape shifting. The only potential circumstance can be creating the vehicle from just one piece of metal which is improbable. Once more pieces are added together and ansabled through specific industrial processes, welding, nips, etc...

However I could potential see it (if not already) a sphere made in one piece, becoming an oval or a cylinder.... but nothing else more complex...

Maybe we're that much closer to knowing why.

Oboy!, Artistic folks would be drooling to get there hands on this...like me.

Imagine the 'Works' this could engender.

Now why will a shape shifting vehicle be of any good? And what would happen to occupants while it shape shifted?

Okay, this is just a theory, but what if we're talking about a metal or alloy (or exotic allotrope, or whatever) that's naturally in a semisolid or liquid state? And instead of being what we'd call constructed, it's held together by an electromagnetic field, which would also allow for the shifting design.

Now why will a shape shifting vehicle be of any good? And what would happen to occupants while it shape shifted?

Well, if it's a spacecraft, a variable-geometry design could be very handy for certain things. For example, you could configure it into a ballistic cylinder for reentry to reduce drag and friction heating, then shift into any number of different forms for atmospheric operations.

Martensite like many other metals and alloys still needs to be tempered to "shape shift"

Got to wonder how anyone dented an undentable material in the first place.

THeres never been any actual proof that any material was recovered ! Any Body`s ,anything ! So Thats a great place to base all our proof on . Nothing ! :tu:

It's a new blend from an old concoction, Martensite was first discovered and experimented with in the late 1800's which predates Roswell a bit.

Just as Long as they hurry up and Invent that " -- ---- ----" ? Dang I can`t remember what I was going to say ?

Oh ! Memory grey matter !

Transformers mate! Only the outer shell would be made from it.. The "cockpit" would have to be fixed!
