Still Waters

Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are powerful tropical storms that cause billions of pounds of damage every year and kill hundreds. Here we look at what they are.

Having lived in Typhoon Alley for 6 years, I can say that most typhoons occur from July through December. One year we had 3 category 4 or 5 typhoons in December. One of the biggest concerns is that a typhoon will turn around and come back, which they've been known to do. I experienced a super-typhoon that tossed school buses around and bent street signs mounted on metal posts to the ground, and toppled concrete fences. In our house the wind and water came in through the air conditioning vents and bubbled the interior paint. It also permanently changed some of the island's topography. I also saw waves that spilled into the swimming pool you see in this photo, which is 72 feet above sea level.

Here's a link to a video of super-typhoon Omar that created the huge waves. It was take in Yigo, where I used to live. One of the worst things is the sound of the wind, it goes on for 12-14 hours, it really grates of your nerves, and there's no way of escaping it.
