The appointment of Simon Stevens to lead the NHS could be a sign of the Coalition trying to import American attitudes to health care, a union official says

The head of health at the country’s largest union has warned the appointment of a new NHS chief could signal the beginning of a shift towards paid-for healthcare.

Simon Stevens, a former advisor to Tony Blair, was announced as the next head of the organisation yesterday.

Mr Stevens, 47, who is currently an executive for a US private healthcare firm, will replace Sir David Nicholson, who has attracted sustained criticism over his part in the Mid-Staffordshire hospital scandal.
