Rafterman Posted October 25, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 25, 2013 Forget about computer problems and politics, THIS is a catastrophic problem for Obamacare. If you've followed the Obamacare discussion from the beginning, the lynchpin to the whole program was that we needed to require healthy people to get health insurance so their premiums could support health insurance for the elderly and less-healthy (pre-existing conditions, etc.). That's the only way the thing works. If this wasn't needed, then the Administration could have simply just expanded medicaid to cover all of those without insurance - BAM, problem solved. But we couldn't afford that - hence the need for this revenue model. So if you don't have the healthy folks singing up and all you have are the Medicaid enrollees, the program collapses under its own weight. Not good. Medicaid enrollment spike a threat to Obamacare structure? http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505267_162-57609254/medicaid-enrollment-spike-a-threat-to-obamacare-structure/ (CBS News) The disastrous rollout of HealthCare.gov may have another serious problem: A CBS News analysis shows that in many of the 15 state-based health insurance exchanges more people are enrolling in Medicaid rather than buying private health insurance. And if that trend continues, there's concern there won't be enough healthy people buying health insurance for the system to work. As the Obamacare website struggles, the administration is emphasizing state-level success. President Obama said Monday, "There's great demand at the state level as well. Because there are a bunch of states running their own marketplaces." But left unsaid in the president's remarks: the newly insured in some of those states are overwhelmingly low-income people signing up for Medicaid at no cost to them. Matt Salo, executive director of the National Association of Medicaid Directors, said, "We're seeing a huge spike in terms of Medicaid enrollments." He says the numbers have surprised him and state officials. CBS News has confirmed that in Washington, of the more than 35,000 people newly enrolled, 87 percent signed up for Medicaid. In Kentucky, out of 26,000 new enrollments, 82 percent are in Medicaid. And in New York, of 37,000 enrollments, Medicaid accounts for 64 percent. And there are similar stories across the country in nearly half of the states that run their own exchanges.
CyberKen Posted October 25, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 25, 2013 I think ObamaCare was suppose to implode all along. Obama has told other democrats that ObamaCare is just a stepping stone to the Canadian Public Option / Single Payer System. The White House is just waiting for the right time to Flip - The - Narrative. " Lets switch to the Public Option! It's really easy and FREE !!! Kowalski Posted October 25, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 25, 2013 I'm not surprised by this... The economy sucks, and most people are living paycheck to paycheck....For a lot, it's cheaper and not as big a headache, to just sign up for Medicaid... CyberKen Posted October 25, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 25, 2013 It's called spin.... The spin is not so good. Obama fired an ObamaCare Operator Earline Davis because she talked to Sean Hannity. It's bad PR for the White House.

ninjadude Posted October 26, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 26, 2013 If you've followed the Obamacare discussion from the beginning, the lynchpin to the whole program was that we needed to require healthy UNINSURED people to get health insurance so their premiums could support health insurance for the elderly and less-healthy (pre-existing conditions, etc.). There I fixed that for you. and yeah this is NOT a surprise, it's how ALL insurance works. Or didn't you know that? Insurance involves pooling funds from many insured entities (known as exposures) to pay for the losses that some may incur. The insured entities are therefore protected from risk for a fee https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insurance
F3SS Posted October 26, 2013 #9 Share Posted October 26, 2013 This a gigantic flub and an even bigger problem for tax payers. Makes sense though. People sign up and see the rates and say WTH why not see if I qualify for free coverage? And they do. Now those left have to pay for both the new medicaiders and obamacare until even more people enlist in Medicaid and oh this weight is getting heavy.
Rafterman Posted October 26, 2013 Author #10 Share Posted October 26, 2013 (edited) There I fixed that for you. and yeah this is NOT a surprise, it's how ALL insurance works. Or didn't you know that? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insurance I'm perfectly aware of how insurance works, thank you very much. And, yes, this is exactly how the Administration is attempting to spin this new disaster for Obamacare. But let me ask you this, what do you think would happen to an insurance company that tried to function with this revenue model? How long do you think it would stay in business? But that doesn't happen in government, right? Programs don't go bankrupt they just continue to operate at ever increasing deficits year after year after year. Remember, Obamacare was at WORST supposed to be deficit neutral. Oh, one more thing, even using the Administration's estimates, there is still roughly going to be the same amount of uninsured in the US as there was before Obamacare. So what did we gain? F3SS Posted October 26, 2013 #11 Share Posted October 26, 2013 So what did we gain? Are you blind? We've gained a lot. Debt, bureaucracy, more IRS, confusion, chaos, a broken multi hundred million dollar website, an abysmal amount of enthusiasm to participate, a growing dependant population... Shall I continue?

But let me ask you this, what do you think would happen to an insurance company that tried to function with this revenue model? How long do you think it would stay in business? they will do fine. But that doesn't happen in government, right? Big Jim Posted October 27, 2013 #13 Share Posted October 27, 2013 People with Utopian ideals such as Obama seem to forget that people generally put their own interests first. This is why capitalism springs up on its own and socialism must be forced on people. Who couldn't have foreseen that if given the choice between a plan that costs and a plan that is free that people would overwhelmingly choose the free one? Only someone naïve enough to think that folks would act for the good of the group and not themselves. Americans are among the most selfless people on the planet. We literally give till it hurts. But on a personal level our motto might as well be "what's in it for me?" instead of "in God we trust." The first rule of public service ought to be the same as the first rule of public speaking :Know your audience. The politicians, including the President, that are trying to force the deceptively named Affordable Care Act on us obviously do not know Americans or people who have to live within a budget. They should try to get to know both to prevent similar massive failures in the future.

When I was playing around with it, the system wouldn't even let me look at Exchange plans until I put my wages as more then 60,000 dollars with wife and two kids. Otherwise it got to the point where it said, "You are probably eligible for Medicare.". Even at 50,000 dollars per year, it sent me to Medicare. It actually directs you to a Medicare sign up page. I think ObamaCare was suppose to implode all along. It is funny that if the Republicans had known that Obamacare was going to sputter so quickly and be so hard to use, they should have just stayed out of the way and reap in the political capital. There I fixed that for you. and yeah this is NOT a surprise, it's how ALL insurance works. Or didn't you know that? That is probably why most insurance also denys policys to people with pre-existing conditions, so they don't go bankrupt. However Obamacare fixed that and forces the insurance companies to cover people whom they probably know will cost them plenty, and if the Exchanges are full of the poor and unhealthy... then the insurance provided will be poor and unhealthy.... or it will fail altogether.
Raptor Witness Posted October 28, 2013 #15 Share Posted October 28, 2013 Almost all the red states are denying Medicaid coverage to cover the gaps in Obamacare for the poor, which is criminal in my opinion. What's worse, a relative handful of terrorists threatening a relative handful of U.S. or the Republicans threatening the lives of millions of Americans? If they dissolved that 50 billion dollar black-budget that the NSA is happily feeding off of, and which has done nothing to stop the recent killings in the U.S. of terrorists KNOWN fully ahead of time, that would pay for a lot of good useful things. What a lie we are living under, what a disgrace to be so easily misled by the Congress, who get away with murder day in and day out. Their rampant evil does not go unnoticed far above the clouds, I can assure you.

I completely agree with that. I say we dissolve the NSA all together and use that money to help people on Medicaid.... Funny, how they can blow money on wars and bombs, but not on helping their citizens....
