NASA's SDO Sees Sun Emit a Mid-level Solar Flare - Oct. 24, 2013

The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare that peaked at 8:30 pm EDT on Oct. 23, 2013. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. Such radiation can disrupt radio signals for as long as the flare is ongoing, anywhere from minutes to hours.

Fast CME Accompanied Mid-level Solar Flare

UPDATE: The M9.4 flare on Oct. 23, 2013, was associated with a coronal mass ejections or CME, a solar phenomenon that can send billions of tons of particles into space that can reach Earth one to three days later. These particles cannot travel through the atmosphere to harm humans on Earth, but they can affect electronic systems in satellites and on the ground.

Sun Emits Second Solar Flare in 2 Days

The sun emitted a significant solar flare, peaking at 4:01 a.m. EDT on Oct. 25, 2013. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. This disrupts the radio signals for as long as the flare is ongoing, anywhere from minutes to hours.

Sun Emits Third Solar Flare in 2 Days

UPDATE: Another solar flare erupted from the same area of the sun on Oct. 25, 2013,which peaked at 11:03 a.m. EDT. This flare is classified as an X2.1 class.

While looked at these articles I thought I wonder what the guy who first saw a solar flare must have thought about it. I was on Sept 1 1859. Here is a link to Mr. Carrington's notes.

Flashing Flare

The Sun unleashed a good-sized (M9 class) flare from an active region facing Earth (Oct. 24, 2013). The flare burst with several characteristic flashes before erupting in a small cascade of coils as the magnetic field in that area regrouped itself. The video, in extreme ultraviolet light, covers about 2.5 hours. The still was taken about 00:30 UT. The elongated, white effect you see is not a flare covering a large part of the Sun: it's an instrumental effect on the chip, only a couple of millimeters in size. Another nearby active region to the upper right spit out a few smaller flares just before the main event left of center. There does not seem to be a substantial coronal mass ejection associated with this event.
