A rare glimpse at sophisticated US spy plane

The Global Hawk is one of the US military's most sophisticated spy planes and the BBC was able to get a rare view of one at Grand Forks Airbase in North Dakota.

It can travel halfway round the world on a single tank of fuel and can track a man on the ground, even when the earth is covered by cloud, from a height of about 18,000m - that's close to 60,000ft.

Dang, at 1.7 billion US dollars per plane, it must be seriously sophisticated.

And it can reach nearly twice the alltitude of a commercial airline.

Unarmed, apparently, and used only as a spy plane.

Amazing.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the news article was saying that 5 of the planes cost $1.7bill. Not $1.7bill each. In fact, I just checked:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_RQ-4_Global_Hawk

There is says the cost about $222.7mill each.

Well... A bargain then.

EDIT: Read... read... read. Very cool. It says 1.7 billion dollars of NATO money.

Not sure why they are calling it a plane. Should be called a drone.
