Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) is kicking off its online deals on Friday, a month earlier than usual - underscoring worries that intense discounting aimed at luring budget-conscious shoppers could result in the most tepid holiday spending rise in four years. U.S. retailers have traditionally kicked off the all-important holiday shopping season on or the day after Thanksgiving and saved some of their best online deals for "Cyber Monday," the Monday after Thanksgiving when workers return to offices and use computers to make holiday purchases. That's not a bad thing, but it's certainly not some heroic act they are performing. If you ask me (and no one will) the holiday season is a ridiculous display of our greed, excess, and wastefullness. His Christmas song has the lines,God Rest You Merry merchants,May You Make The Yuletide Pay. Another line goes,Angels We Have Heard On High,Tell Us To Go Out And Buy. He was a real professor of mathmatics at MIT and used to make novelty records ages ago. I heard my first Christmas ad on the radio this year second week of September along with seeing the first of the decor displays going up at a retail location. First Christmas movie I saw listed this year was in the last few days of September. First week of October I was at a Target with my mom, and at the back of the Halloween display area, Christmas decor was already up on the shelves. By last week, the fall and Halloween sections of a few stores were already being compressed and clearanced- to make way for more Christmas stuff. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, I'm more than happy to take a break from Christmas and just have a nice few days with my family, stuffing my face, and in general ignoring the commercial world.
