seeder Posted November 3, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 3, 2013 OK well Im not too sure what to make of this story, but here it is anyway... Mummy-fried! Tutankhamun's body spontaneously combusted INSIDE his coffin following botched embalming job after he died in speeding chariot accident * The Egyptian boy pharaoh 'burst into flame after chemical reaction' * His body caught fire inside sarcophagus thanks to embalming fluid * Scientists also believe a chariot crash was the cause of his death http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2485675/Mummy-fried-Tutankhamuns-body-spontaneously-combusted-INSIDE-coffin-following-botched-embalming-job-died-speeding-chariot-accident.html
PersonFromPorlock Posted November 3, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 3, 2013 Presumably at least one member of the British nobility reads the Daily Mail, so I guess it qualifies as a 'peer reviewed' journal.
Frank Merton Posted November 3, 2013 #3 Share Posted November 3, 2013 Oh surely the Royals have more class than that. However, there are other peers . . ..

+susieice Posted November 3, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 3, 2013 (edited) New York Daily News is also publishing this story. Back in 2007, National Geographic was saying that Tut had died in a chariot accident, although it doesn't mention the ribs and the heart, or a fire in the sarcophagus. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/10/071023-king-tut.html Edited November 3, 2013 by susieice
pallidin Posted November 3, 2013 #6 Share Posted November 3, 2013 Yeah, I had heard of this before as well. It seems the type of injuries are consistant with having falling from one's own chariot(say during a sharp turn), perhaps then being run over by one(or both) of his chariot wheels, then completely run over by another horse and chariot close behind in such races. And perhaps by even more than one chariot behind him. I've seen this in motorcycle races. Just guessing though.
+susieice Posted November 3, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 3, 2013 (edited) I was just wondering, the article says the body combusted inside the sarcophagus and temperatures could have gone to 400F. Since the death mask was 24k gold, would that not have been hot enough to melt it, or at least disfigure it, which didn't happen. Gold is a very soft metal which is why most jewelry has an alloy in it so the gold isn't so pliable. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/king-tut-died-chariot-accident-scientists-article-1.1505267 Edited November 3, 2013 by susieice
lightly Posted November 3, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 3, 2013 (edited) ..smokin in bed . If there was a flash fire .. maybe someone noticed and extinguished it before the gold began to melt? Showing results for melting temperature of gold Search instead for melting tempurature of gold Search Results 1,948°F (1,064°C) Gold, Melting point Edited November 3, 2013 by lightly
+susieice Posted November 3, 2013 #9 Share Posted November 3, 2013 OK. Thanks for the links lightly. Wasn't sure how hot it had to be to melt gold. For a soft metal, it has a high melting point.

+susieice Posted November 3, 2013 #11 Share Posted November 3, 2013 (edited) According to this skeptics site, the human body needs a temperature of 1600F for a two hour period to cremate. http://skepdic.com/shc.ht Don't know how hot it would really be if the oils used in embalming would burn. Will try to see if I can find it. Found this but it doesn't specifically mention the combustion point of the oils used in mummification. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrolysis http://www.spurlock.illinois.edu/explorations/online/mummification/pages/materials1.html Edited November 3, 2013 by susieice
