French Gays Hail Their New 'Pink TV' Channel

PARIS (Reuters) - Gays across France celebrated the launch of the country's first television channel for homosexuals on Monday, anticipating a pink mixture of fashion, travel, talk, cult movies, music and soap operas.

The launch of "Pink TV" comes as gays in France are already making headlines with a controversial push to legalize same-sex marriages and calls to enhance the fiscal rights of gay couples.

"The gay wave," Le Parisien daily said in big letters on its front page on top of a rainbow flag.

But the creators of Pink TV say they also want to cater for heterosexuals.

"Pink will not be a ghetto channel, but one to assert gay identity," its president, Pascal Houzelot, told Le Parisien. "We want to accompany a positive development in society but remain watchful of movements going the opposite way."

Houzelot estimated some 3.5 million people in France are gay, some seven percent of the population, and hoped to attract at least 180,000 subscribers to the private channel.

For nine euros ($11) a month, viewers will be able to cheer gay comedians, enter debates on gay rights, enjoy classic films or watch *spam filter*s late at night.

Gay rights activists say the channel could help make homosexuality more acceptable in France, where the conservative government has taken a strong stance against legalizing gay weddings or allowing gays to adopt children.

"The gay channel helps to show homosexuality is something normal, which is a good thing," said Alain Piriou from the Inter-LGBT gay rights group. "It can highlight that gays are just another part of society with their own interests."

But Piriou said Pink TV, whose launch has caused little controversy so far, would be unlikely to play a major role in the struggle to improve gay rights.

"In our campaign to legalize gay weddings, for example, we seek to address as broad an audience as possible. Promoting this demand on the gay channel -- to ourselves basically -- doesn't really serve this interest," he said.

The debate about same-sex marriages gained steam after a maverick mayor performed France's first gay wedding in June. Although a court subsequently annulled it, many gay couples have vowed to tie the knot.

Some politicians from the Socialist opposition are promising to push for legalizing gay marriage, but conservatives oppose it as an attack on the sanctity of marriage.

COMMENT:  Leading the way to family and social meltdown

Has it ever occured to you, to keep your bigotry to yourself?

324429[/snapback]

Apparently not.

GSR, some people are gay. That's just the way it is. Some people are black, some people are white, some Chinese...you get the drift...

Regardless of whether you agree with it or not, people are allowed to express themselves, be it via speech, newsprint or television.

I fail to understand your overwhelming concern with what the gay community may or may not be doing. I ask again, what business is it of yours what gay people do? Are you forced to watch this gay channel? Compelled perhaps? Why such anger over gay issues?

I wonder what Freud would have to say about this? blink.gif

I've already told myself to put a sock in it, but here I am posting my inane opinions.

Don't want to argue, just gonna say right quick that freedom of speech goes both ways.

But then I waxed all philosophical and started arguing with myself. Does freedom of speech include "hate speech" or bigoted speech? I understand this is a forum and anything is subject to a mod's discretion, but I'm not talking about the forums, mostly I guess the american version of free speech.

Does that fall under the "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" thing?

I understand freedom of speech does not equal the 'right' to be heard, or the right to force others to hear you, or the right to not have people walk away when you're talking... is censorship of bigoted or hate speech compromise freedom of speech? Would it be best to have that speech out in the open so the public can see what it is so it doesn't creep in PC style propaganda and people can recognize it for what it is without a governing body telling them? Or better to censor hate speech so the public is ignorant of its occurance and not give them any ideas? Or what's the deal with that? Or even programming directed at a demographic, does that perpetuate division?

Meh, just never think about it too much, sorry for the rambling. Interesting article.

Good on them, there are many gays in society and its about time people recognise they are there and they have the right to live that lifestyle.

QSR, no one wants to hear your bigotry!

I hope "Gay" will not have a great impact against children in the next generation. I hope their "Pink Power" will not convert little childrens to be homosexuals at a young age and feel great and add some encouragement.

I hope unlike the society we live in now the children of the next generation will not even question a persons sexuality and know that its now of their business!!!!.

Oh dear me...another homo phobe.A child will be gay regardless of what they have watched if its genetic.

and feel great and add some encouragement.

So what you are saying is that Gay people do not have the right to feel encouraged and feel great about themselves. Why? They are humans, people. there is nothing different about them apart from they have relationships and sex with the same sex and why not if that is what makes them happy!!!

Mind your own business. You do not have any right to judge someone because of their sexual preference anymore than they have a right to judge you.

On that note I would like to complain about all the shows on tv that show happy single people. They flaunt that lifestyle as if its ok, breaking away the values of traditional family.

I am flabbergasted. I think no single people should throw there lifestyle into our faces. They also shouldnt be allowed to have jobs like teachers, where they can turn our kids to the point where they dont want a partner.

I also think that just in case you dont realise as some people seem not to, that sarcasm needs to be shown on tv more....

Where I live, everyone around my age doesn't really care whether someone is gay or not.... some people are, and some aren't.

I'm actually surprised when I hear people make bigoted remarks. I can't understand why it would actually bother them. It's just like when people get offended by interracial couples.... who cares? Does it really affect the way you live your life?

There is NO reason whatsoever to single them out and to make hateful remarks.

Too right . thumbsup.gif In fact isn't it sad (sad as in pathetic) that there is even a thread such as this where people are having to stand up for Gay people...I would have thought seeing as the world has moved on so much that this kind of bigotry would have been left behind in the stone age...obviously not! sad.gif

Does anyone have the right to not like something and then to say so anymore?

debate the idea

I hate this 'hate speech' and 'hate crime'.

Speech is speech, to be debated and exposed, verified, understood.

Crime is crime, to be punished.

Hate is hate, and should be exposed, analized, and explained so that it does not lead to violence, oppression, crime, perpetuation of demographic division, and/or propagation of ignorant propaganda.

Attacking the 'haters' can cause them to dig their heels in and resist more, unless you plan on killing them... that might work. Then people would be too scared to even THINK "watching those 2 guys go at it on the park bench makes me noxious." so it'd all be good.

I wouldn't worry Celumnaz, if you were insulting black people we'd be angry at it too tongue.gif

French Gays Hail Their New 'Pink TV' Channel

Pink blink.gif Its that a sterotype laugh.gif

mixture of fashion, travel, talk, cult movies, music and soap operas.

So how does it differ from a 'straight channel' tongue.gif

Seriously though, I think if they want tv to make it more acceptable, making a ppv tv chanel wont do any good, you have to show it on mainstream tv so people actually notice. Then some of the people who've posted on this thread might see it, and finally realise 'Oh... they are human too'.

Where did I say hate was ok? Where? I'm saying, if people should be allowed to 'express themselves' then people should be allowed to express themselves. On Both sides. Where again did I say "Hate is ok."?

If they have a right to PRoclaim "I'm Gay and Beautiful!" someone else has just as much right to say "I don't care! Go away!" or whatever. But it seems, they're not free to say that according to some here.

Oh my goodness, now insulting black people?? When did I even insult a gay person?? I WILL insult extremeist leftist socialist liberals, but they leave themselves open to it, it's hard not to, you really have to try because speaking the truth is an insult to them and an attack.

And what if I did insult them? I've had a relationship with the same sex before. I have room to talk. Do you? But as an aside, I didn't insult them, and these comments strike me as an attempt to suppress someone's opinion, suppress his freedom of expression.

And another first admission... first admited here. I agree with him. I guess, that's an insult if you're an extreme leftist. Everyone's open minded as long as they agree with the leftists. They love everyone as long as they agree with them. Can't have civil disagreement, it's labled biggottry. Impossible to not like something without being a bigot in their eyes.

I'm a licorice bigot. I hate licorice. It was born that way, it tastes bad, it smells bad, and I don't like it. I guess that makes me evil? Because I have a genetic disposition to not like or agree with something for myself?

I'm not the one trying to legislate through the courts. I don't care if their position is 6 armed people should be allowed to fly airplanes, you don't do it through the courts. These apologists just let it happen, I guess that's where my 'anger' comes from, when people abuse the system. Like Kerry. Like most extremeist leftists. Well, extremeist rightys too, but the leftists are so blatant that it does bring out some... 'anger'.

I think she said it because your posted twice on not being allowed to say what you think because people will claim its hate speach. tongue.gif

Actually its the 'its a sin' aspect we have a problem with, and statements like this "Leading the way to family and social meltdown" & "I hope "Gay" will not have a great impact against children in the next generation. I hope their "Pink Power" will not convert little childrens to be homosexuals at a young age and feel great and add some encouragement. Courts...? huh.gif You do read the "lefty's" posts on this site don't you? We don't to say Courts... we tend to say execution. Hate to break it to you, the left on this site is far more hard line against crime than the right. tongue.gif

well I do think people should be allowed to speak, and people should be allowed to disagree.

I would hate it if we couldn't talk about slavery or holocost and such. It needs to be said, explored, and disagreed with, so future generations are aware of it. Not cencored or attacked or nobody will learn anything, might even be inclined to go along with it if the attack is rabid enough.

Speech is speech, Hate is hate, crime is crime.

And I'm being careful not to bring religion into this.

And I lost you on the court thing. If the leftys over here want to do what they want to do, but the law says they can't, they go to court instead of the legislature. An appointed judge (appointed by leftys) then dictates new law from the bench to the people against their stated will, the law. I'm not talking about executing anyone, but for the record I'm pro execution.

About my sexuality... well... I have opinions on so many issues because I feel I've done just about everything, at least more than most my age, and I feel I know what I'm talking about from experience tempered with knowledge... it sounds like I pull things out of thin air, but that's because it's already in my past, been there, done that, don't want to pull out all my papers just to prove a point I know is true. I'm a little Taoistic that way, what I've done becomes part of me, I don't need to rehash it, I just know it already. That's why the 'why' question is sometimes irritating and I just want to say "because it is". Sometimes it doesn't matter if something's backed up, they won't believe it anyway.

Anyway, speech is speech. To be a bigot you'd have to do something to actively oppress an opposing idea. Saying your thoughts is not oppression, especially when it's open for someone to express and explain the disagreement. Now, introducing a bill to have Gays executed would be a lil bigoted action there...

A bigot is just someone who's intolerant. It doesn't mean that they have violent thoughts or anything like that about a certain group (or groups) of people.

You can have opinions on whatever you want, no one is saying that you can't. But people ARE going to get offended when you tell them that certain kinds of people are different and shouldn't be treated the same as everyone else.
