Spanish ship in 'heated' standoff with Royal Navy in Gibraltar

A Spanish survey ship has defied repeated orders from British forces to leave Gibraltar waters

Spain risked provoking a serious diplomatic incident on Tuesday after sending a survey ship into Gibraltar's territorial waters and defying orders to leave by the Royal Navy.

The Ramon Margalef, a 164ft oceanographic survey ship entered British Gibraltar Territorial Waters around 5pm on Monday and was still there Tuesday afternoon despite repeated orders by British Royal Navy patrol boat HMS Sabre to leave.

"We are in the unpleasant situation of a stand-off," a source from Gibraltar's authorities told the Daily Telegraph. "This is an incursion of the worst kind and the most serious incident since August."

Oh the drama, I had to lay down after this

Silly lot. If they want to be provocative, as they obviously do, the thing to do would be to take notice of them at all. Then if (say) they thought they could try their luck at more and more provocations, then one day a patrol boat would pop up with a loaded machine gun pointed at them. They couldn't say it was unprovoked, could they.

Get all the British tourists /holiday makers in Spain to boycott their bloody awful San Miguel beer, and only visit British bars and their economy will go down the pan, which would really screw them up.Por Nada.

They want a negative reaction from Gibraltar so Spain can go the EU or UN about it.

Why are they bothering? The EU has already indicated which side it's on. (Surprise surprise!)

If this had been an incursion by a jet into airspace, and had remained there despite repeated warnings, it would have been shot down (and rightfully so). I think some clarification needs to be put out as to how many warnings a boat will receive before the warnings run out and it's removed against it's will (so to speak) is needed, so it puts an end to this childish nonsense once and for all.

I don't understand why we can't make life difficult for them until they've learn't their place. The word should go out from the Prime Minister that the appropriate way for people to show their annoyance at Spain would be for them to go on holiday next year to Portugal, France or Italy but not to their country.

That would just about finish off the people in that country that actually have a job.

exactly - the EU's findings from their investigation which found in favour of Spanish actions at Gibraltars border has only given the Spanish more bravado, but why should we be surprised by any of it. Spain's history of democracy can be counted in decades not centuries. their economy is down the pan, along with unemployment and youth unemployment, they are a nation in crisis - Spain is trying to divert its peoples attentions away from the failings of the Spanish government. its a tactic used time and time again by the dagoes distracting them with a common enemy, that being the United Kingdom.

the worst thing we can do is get hot under the collar and overreact - turning what's NOT even a mole hill into a mountain. Okay they are bobbing about in our waters but what are they achieving? nothing in the grand scheme of things.

we'll get our own back, bide our time.

just for the record i'd love nothing more than to blow any Spanish boat/ship out the water, after repeated warnings.

the sooner the people of the UK wake up to the fact were being hoodwinked by the whole EU experiment the better. these countries who pretend to be our closest allies are far from it. mark my words.

Blimey a 164ft survey ship has entered our waters. I bet our armed forces are quaking in their boots!

If sabre rattling is the thing the Royal Navy could produce a new artificial reef at any moment. We should just give them the bird and laugh at them.

This the best threat they can come up with?

And how much is this going to cost us British tax payers?

Dear oh dear, if the Royal Navy want to protect bits of water and seek out who is floating across them, then they can come right back here and start in the Channel.........................oh wait, sorry, too late.

Haha agreed, (but the HMS Sabre is the smaller of the two - only 52ft long)

That patch of water is notorious lurking ground for the Astute class.

A class of submarine so silent that the Americans were 'astonished' that it was not only able to to detect, but creep up on their very secretly designed hunter killer class subs, So much they have considered ditching nuclear reactors in favour of a Swedish design.

The Treaty of Utrecht is clear....Gibraltar is a British Colony in Perpetuity. End of argument.

This Survey boat must be boarded and all equipment from the survey be confiscated (in accordance with maritime law), the captain of said Survey Boat be thrown in the Brig, with his Captians Certificate renounced, for contravening International Law, and the boat be hauled out into International waters and left there.

The real culprit in all of this is of course the British PM (Cameroon) and his Lib dem Sidekick (cant remember his name) who should have the guts to station a Destroyer in Gibraltar to assert the nationality of the Rock.

Tory / Lib Dem wimps will ruin the Nation...IMO

Deep in the bowels of the Palace of Westminster, the Foreign Secretary (FS) is in conference with the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS)......

FS...."Tarquin old chap, if this little kerfuffle we're having with the Dons over Gib goes pear-shaped, what can you let me have to boost our military presence on the Rock?"

CDS...."After all this 'streamlining' of the Forces the MOD's been up to, Jeremy, the best I can do for you is two battalions of Boy Scouts, an assault regiment from the Church Lads' Brigade and a couple of pedalos crewed by some Sea Cadets!"

If we had a Navy we deserve this sort of thing with spain would not happen. we have 98 ships in the Navy including RFA. but only 19 major surface combatants. 6 Destroyers and 13 Frigates. we are a maritime nation and everything we have to day we owe to the Royal Navy here we are talking about a service which hasnt lost a major war in the last 300 years. no other armed force can boast such a record. but the way things are going it'll be a record we'll lose in the not to distant future. defence of the realm must be at a all time low and shows we haven't learnt the lessons from the Falklands war which in part was triggered by defence cuts

we've spent the last few decades fighting the wrong type of wars. counter insurgency and Nation building. if the money spent on these two land wars, and to add neither have increased our standing at home or in the world. we could have doubled the navies budget and built the navy we should have and more importantly need. the Navy would be the sword to our enemies throat and the comforting shield to our friends.

its about time we got our act together and built another 10 Destroyers, taking the total to 16, and Frigates from the current 13 type 23's to 25 New type 26's. this along with the two new aircraft carriers would give us a major presence all over the world and increase our standing in the world. securing us as a major power throughout the 21st century.

Its a National disgrace we have allowed the Royal Navy to be reduced to such numbers. the Navy is so vital words cannot express enough the vitalness. back in 1899 we had the Naval Defence act - called the two power standard, which stated the Navy had to maintain a number of battleships at least equal to the combined strength of the next two largest navies in the world. those days are long gone. but remember this we have a small army, doesn't even rank in the top ten in the world. doubling it wouldn't increase its standing. the RAF, is ranked 5th in the world, doubling the size would see us remain in 5th. but double the size of the Navy and although still ranked second in the world, we'd be stronger than the Navies in 3rd 4th and 5th combined and unlike the other two services Army/RAF the Navy has a global reach. it carries a deterrent in ways the other two cannot. until we take such action the actions of the Spanish will continue and encourage others. and as a cost to the nation a extra 1% rise in the naval budget - we can afford to do it. or as we face the future the question has to be can we afford not to?
