Abnormal weather across the Middle-East has seen snow in some regions for the first time in decades.

Cairo is traditionally associated with sweltering hot conditions and a sandy desert landscape, but Egyptians waking up in the capital this week were in for a surprise when unusual weather conditions meant that the city had been blanketed in thick snow for the first time in 112 years.

How does this fit into the global warming situation?

Global warming characterizes statistical the increase of temperatures in the atmosphere and the oceans. From a meteorological point of view, dramatic regional climate changes may also be resulted by the same possible causes. Snow in Egypt isn´t an indicator that global warming does not exist.

Does this change to the "Winter of Arab Discontent," versus the "Arab Spring?"

So snow in Cairo is part of the global warming process - why did it snow 112 years ago? Was that global warming too?

The global warming works both ways. It isn' t just warming up in some areas but everywhere globally. The fact that it did snow in Cairo doesn't prove anything. It can very well snow due to change of northen winds.

There is a reason it's called climate change and not global warming. Avs76 and donteatus. Please do not comment on something scientific if you have not a clue on how any of this works. You clearly are not educated in anything involving climate or science. Reading a random website does not make you educated. Go sign up for a bunch of classes in your local college and learn. Then join the discussion. You just make yourself look stupid otherwise. Could you teach yourself a very general understanding? Yes, but you would need too know how too find credible websites. Which, unless you've gone too college in the internet age. You do not know how too do that even if you think you do. Also, you would need too put in a lot of time too find the credible websites that dumb it down too give you a basic understanding. Most of them assume you have the education when you are reading it. Ones that are on every day news sites tend too just tell you without truly educating you so it leaves it open for you too reject it because you truly do not understand. It's common and not your fault. What is your fault is if you talk out of your butt.

I wonder how you showed your educated side on the topic of the post through your writing above.

Everybody is educated enough to some degree to comment. If anyone cant comprehend that then it is their uneducated point of view.

I am very glad on behalf of the kids in cairo who could see the snow and play with it.

All this proves is it is possible to have snow in Cairo, which we already knew. I hope they enjoyed it.

That´s correct so far. But if uneducated points of view are taking the results of scientic research into question by a cheeky reflex, education is required. And the community gave help with a little bit of education here.

The problem I notice is that people who don't comprehend don't comprehend that they don't comprehend, so they go ahead and act the fool completely unaware of the fact, and then argue with those who try to show them. Best to just abandon them to their foolishness in the knowledge that being that way they will never get any influence anyway.

Climate is always changing, so snow in Israel and Egypt is positively due to climate change.

oi. this isnt clearly a place for some science committee or seminar. Even then thoughts from viewers are exchanged and questions are received. I am not for elitist approach in science. because this isnt what science is for. it wasnt ok that she tried to silence people whatever her reasons may be. but i am open to any scientific info she may provide which she didnt yet spoke of any.

Ginger, thanks for your post and your point of view. I admit I do not have formal education in any kind of environmental sciences, especially those specifically pertaining to the global warming or climate change phenomenon. I would suggest that the vast majority of people don't have any formal education on the topic, even in "educated" western society. This doesn't mean that we can't form some kind of opinion on the topic. On the contrary, I think that lay people should form an opinion, and quickly, so they can take appropriate action to halt the current trend of global warming. I'm sure you would agree.

In relation to UM message boards I think it is unrealistic to expect that UM fans need to have at least some formal education in a specific topic before they submit a post. It is the many and varied opinions and views that keeps us coming back here.

My point of view? I am divided. "Experts" tell us the planet the planet is warming due due increased pollution. This makes sense even to an "uneducated" people like me. But then I see crazy things like snow in Cairo and I question the global warming warnings. Then warming supporters argue that increasingly crazy weather patterns may be an indicator of global warming. But then I read that it snowed there 112 years ago. See how little old me can get confused?

Anyway, thanks again for your input, it's this kind of discussion that helps ideas grow and we move forward.

PS thyra, thanks for your support :-)

I listened to a dude on coast to coast last week talking of an impending Ice age, Im sure he will use this strange weather incident to boast on his theory, and to negate global warming theory. Basically if you can think of it theres a theory, suprised theres not a "climate Same" theory saying oh well the climate has been to much of the same for too long, because of this an impending disaster is unavoidable. Personally I think its all abit silly, I mean i have tried to decrease my carbon footprint, nothing to to with global warming, if you put poisions into any thing it cant be good. Seriously, global warming, ice age these things take tens to hundreds of thousands of years to occur, nothing that will effect us or our children. So by the time something like this occurs we will A. be extinct or B. be able to get off planet im sure. Big deal if the

average temp somewhere is up 10 degrees this year, give it a few years and itll be down ten degrees. I really wish people would focus on making the world better for us in thehere in now, a better world for our children, thats whats important IMHO.

The cairo snow is absolutely fascinating.

The thing to understand is that what is happening is human activity is driving climate change, this climate change includes wider extremes of temperature, with these extremes having a a trend towards warmer temps.

You have normal variations in local weather, and abnormal spikes that are not part of the over all trend.

For example, you have a combination of systems that will spike a temp in either direction that is not necessarily tied to the ongoing trend of temperature.

Science is a process of gathering relevant information in order to prove a hypothesis. This jury is still out on man made climate change, until a trusted source provides more consistent and conclusive data. Skepticism is good for everyone, and IMO we need to be skeptical of a grand unifying global government body who presents information with the impetus that more governmental control is necessary in order to avert a calamity. As a global people we can't seem to agree on much of anything, but we're supposed to buy into global warming? Not me and not yet.

Man made climate change is accepted by over 90% of climate scientists. The jury is still out only among politicians and the general public.

Also, bit of a correction:

Science is a process of gathering relevant information in order to prove a hypothesis.

No, science is a bit more than that, but when it comes to a hypothesis the point is not to gather information to prove it, but to attempt to disprove it.

I need to research how climate scientist are able to accept that actions by man have caused the climate to change. Obviously I am no climate scientist, but if such conclusive evidence exist to sway 90% of a a group of specialist then one would have to believe that the data is overwhelming.

The links section of the website provides several papers that establish the consensus on climate change. The NCSE website also has a good deal of information on the problem. http://ncse.com/climate
