Asterix Posted October 27, 2004 #1 Share Posted October 27, 2004 The Greek-Turkish relations are tested, again, by a mini-crisis which, according to some analysts, could be related with Turkey's attempt to establish a certain status-quo just before the opening of negotiations about Turkey's European future. In the past week, in numerous occasions Turkish fighters have violated the Greek airspace, while Turkish navy patrol boats are entering, unauthorized, into Greek territorial waters. In most cases the Turkish aircrafts were escorted back to Turkish airspace by Greek interceptors, but there were situations in which there were simulated dogfights. Greek Goverment stated that "aggressive behavior in the Aegean will not help Turkey in its bid to join the European Union — which Greece has openly backed". Meanwhile, a poll indicated that three in four Greeks want Athens to veto Turkey’s EU access unless Turkey ends its violations in the Aegean.
