Can fusion ever really produce more energy?

Four Winds

While I see the universe itself as a perpetual motion machine I don't understand how fusion could produce more energy than what is put into it. What are they tapping into to get more energy than they put in?

Basically it's E=mc2 . Our Sun's been doing it for millenia, keeping us alive...

You can convert mass into energy - 'destroying' a tiny weeny amount of mass creates a LOT of energy. It's not really 'free' as you do have to lose the mass, but if we can sort out a way to control it, it's a pretty good deal - not much lost mass, lots of energy.. and if you do it right not much (or no) pollution/radiation....

Try here for a fairly good beginner's explanation
